This secret makes me want fic of Jon and his friends being raped by older members of the Watch.

[personal profile] sugar_spun 2013-02-16 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I think Jon is clearly defiant enough to kill the shit out of anyone who tried. And between him and a big direwolf, I'm not seeing anyone succeeding.

Anyway, not sure why you'd really want fic of it. It's not going to 'settle the score', if that's how you're thinking.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I just like rapefic.

Except that's not how it works. Strong fighters who can break people over their knee and eat four dozen eggs a day get raped too. Saying a character wouldn't allow that to happen to them is...sketchy as all hell.

MTE. And it plays into some very harmful stereotypes about male rape survivors (e.g. they're somehow "less than a man" if they "allow" themselves to be raped because a real man would never "let that happen").

This!

[personal profile] sugar_spun 2013-02-16 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Oh good lord.

Jon is violent enough to attack people for perceived insults, to threaten to kill someone for beating up a new friend of his. He's one of the Night Watch's best fighters, and has a big damn wolf.

This is not some damn debate on whether people are 'letting' themselves get raped: I am saying the character Jon would fight back, and chances are, he'd win. There are scenarios where maybe he would, but not many.

This is not some statement about whether or not martially competent people will always fight back or succeed. This is a statement about Jon, which is why I didn't include his friends.

ETA: Sorry, I got a bit annoyed by you immediately interpreting an assumption about a fictional character to being a sweeping generalization of rape victims. It's rather insulting.

Your assumption is insulting

[personal profile] sugar_spun 2013-02-16 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no that poor fictional character's feelings how will I ever apologize for his hurt. Oh. no.

Your assumption wasn't insulting to a fictional character. It was insulting to me.

Unless you are Jon, no.

[personal profile] atgdng 2013-02-16 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, your argument gets really shot to hell in the latest book, but I'm not sure if you've read it and I don't want to spoil anyone. Needless to say, Jon isn't as untouchable as imagined, and since he's probably the most defended person on the Wall...

I am saying the character Jon would fight back, and chances are, he'd win. There are scenarios where maybe he would, but not many.

Saying that X character or person could never get raped because they would fight back is very harmful and buys into rape culture.

You think all rape victims are as physically weak as newborn kitties? People are caught off-guard, people are raped by people they know and trust.

You are basically insinuating that everyone and anyone who is physically strong or has fighting skills and got raped are at blame for not defending themselves.

You are also insinuating that it's the victims fault for not knowing how to defend themselves and throwing off their attackers.

[personal profile] sugar_spun 2013-02-16 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
No, I'm not. Pick your battles better.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Just because it wasn't what you intended to mean, doesn't mean that you are not insinuating it.

Having a wolf pet would sure as shit help keep your "modesty." But yeah, to keep it "real" there should definitely be at least a recognizable threat of sexual assault happening in the Watch - although whether or not Jon would know about it, given his position, is debatable.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if the older men would be the ones doing it, as GRRM indicates that the Watch used to be a place where it was considered a very great honor to serve where generally honorable and valiant men went. He doesn't specify when exactly it changed into the Watch serving as a sort of jail but from the way the older characters act from the younger I'd guess relatively recently? Anyway I'd guess that it would be the younger watchers generally trying to rape each other, especially since the Watch has changed from "valiant service" to more or less jail.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
That makes sense and also sounds good.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Except that's not the case. In the fourth book the lore about the Wall gets a lot more detailed, and GRRM goes as far as to say that they've been scraping the bottom of the barrel for new recruits at least as far as 20-30 years prior to when Jon joined (as long as the Old Bear was commander, at any rate).

Furthermore, Jon makes quite a few enemies among the higher officers at the end of the third book and into the fourth... He's even held captive for a time in which it would be perfectly reasonable to assume that might be raped as a punshiment.

I mean, I'm trying to be as spoiler-free as possible here, but the third and fourth books make it clear that not all of the older men of the Watch are good and honorable people. And even so, that still doesn't preclude the "where women are few a boy will do" standpoint that is as OLD AS TIME, and rife in organizations where women are either absent or forbidden from joining.

Feel free to use spoilers, I've read all books up to the middle of the fifth but it has a long time and my memory is hazy. Outside of the older new recruits that had joined (like the one Tyrion sent to the wall whose name I can't remember and the guys Arya was traveling with, Biter and whatnot) the older members came off as generally honorable guys if I recall correctly. It seemed like the younger ones were more malicious and were the ones causing trouble.

Maybe you should examine your life and choices then.

At this point wouldn't that just feed into my ego? I don't want to get a big head. The one I have is already a perfect size for me.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 09:22 am (UTC)(link)
What about them? I mean, I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for someone to write me really hot ASoIaF Jon Snow rapefic because most of the ASoIaF fic I've read has not been terribly good. So instead I will choose to read really hot rapefic in other fandoms, which I feel pretty great about.

I don't really care about your kinks, I'm saying you should question your aroused response to a well-reasoned argument about the disproportionate amount of women raped in a book series.

Sometimes a little shame is a good thing.
