Heh, that's nothing compared to the still-alive butthurt against the Russians.

though at least there was a semi-war with the Russians.

The French's sin was not obeying to Bush's penis war like good doggies.

Russians actually are awful though.

Corrupt criminalised shithole, with a culture of intolerance, violence, and hatred.

The Russians are not exactly soft and cuddly at the moment. Well, at least their government isn't. And it's not butthurt because, "Darn it. They hurt our widdle fweelings" like it can be with the French. It's because Soviets were constantly threatening to start WWIII: Nuclear edition with the world.

And ungrateful Butthurt at that, considering without France America would not exist. Their Navy kept the British from resupplying and bringing in fresh troops during the War of Independence.

If the U.S. isn't allowed to say everyone in Europe should fawn over it for WWII -- which it should not be! -- I don't think France is allowed to say the U.S. should be grateful for essential aid in the American Revolution. That was a very long time and several governments ago. In fact, it was an extremely unpopular government that splurged a lot of money on foreign wars and palaces and not enough on feeding people, and which subsequently got very messily toppled.

That shit is so fucking stupid, and always was, and aaaaaaaagh it just pisses me off so much. Still. Everyone who said any of that dumb "French surrender monkey" bullshit should never have a fucking political opinion again. For Christ's sake.

Still, I have to say that I don't see it so much anymore. I mean, you see the occasional "French as effete snob" thing, but that's a different stereotype and one that predates the whole stupid fucking Iraq thing.

First, it's "cheese eating, surrender monkeys." Second, it was a joke told in the 90's in an episode of the Simpsons way before 9/11. The person who said it was Willie, a Scot. He wasn't to keen on the French. But then he wasn't too keen on anyone. It was joke. And on the Simpsons, everyone is game. (God knows they've poked fun at America as well as a hundreds of other countries.)

You must be young because anti-French jokes haven't been a "thing" since 2001. They've been around in the US since there was a US mostly because the US started out as a British colony and the Brits and the French have had a long history of bickering to put it lightly. The US just never dropped it once they became independent.

We were cool with the French for, like, a couple decades after we got founded. They were bros to us during our Revolution and then we were pretty hyped about their revolution. And then Napoleon came along and then Adams and his crew were just super angry about it, and we almost went to war with France, but then we didn't, but then we went to war with the British, but then everybody kind of got over it.

Er, these jokes were mostly light-hearted before that year though. After that it all became about how France is an evil socialist terrorist hole full of terrorist lovers who never work and surrender when they hear a bag burst, come on.

IDK, it seems like the anti-French thing hasn't been *as* focussed prior to 2001. Before then it was just "lololol those Europeans with their shitty high unemployment" (never mind that the EU could tolerate higher unemployment because of stronger welfare states, and the German tendency to be anti-inflation had something to do with it too), rather than bagging on the French for having the temerity to not gung-ho join the beating on a crappy little country.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the US was so anti French they let the French put a massive fucking statue up in New York in gratitude for France's help in forming the country.

You are an idiot. Up until Bush the French might have been snobs, but at least people didn't insult their courage given how the French Resistance basically risked being tortured to death to make D-Day happen and French civilians put their own lives at risk time and again to get allied POWs and downed Airmen back home safe. Those jokes are an insult to brave allies, and disrespectful to the US, Allied, and French Resistance soldiers who all lost their lives. The US populace could only have hoped to have been a quarter as brave as France's if the tables had been turned.

Yes, that was my first thought. I imagined that the part about butthurt was supposed to be talking about the history of America's independence, and I couldn't figure out why OP thinks that the jokes started in 2001...

Eh, it's mostly stemming from the British and emulating them. It really has nothing to do with 2001, even if some people have used that to exacerbate it.

I rarely see this jokes meant to be taken seriously, and besides, the rest of the world pokes fun at the US.
