Doesn't she go out of her way in this book to point out that everyone is a terrible person?

(admittedly I only got about halfway through before I decided there were less grindingly miserable ways to spend my free time, maybe it had a triumphant and heartwarming ending.)

I am shocked by that spoiler. I never would have guessed.

OH YEAH SHE DOES :D

I read the whole thing, by the way, so I know that maybe... two people weren't terrible (and I enjoyed it a lot too; it's really my kind of book)

I didn't think it was a bad book, looked at objectively! But I prefer escapist fiction, I think - It was really not my kind of book.

(I sat there thinking, "You know if I want to sit through miserable hours of people fighting about zoning and social justice I could go to the local inclusionary housing nonprofit's meetings - OH WAIT I DO." And you know, that group is a cesspool of institutional dysfunction and small-group politics and petty personality issues but it still isn't as miserable as the people in that book.

Basically I am politically the exact opposite of OP but I also felt like it was telling me I am terrible and my life is pointless...)

Art doesn't have to be didactic, but sometimes it is, and that's not actually a crime

Oooh, this book! I read the prologue once, but that's it. I hope I can check it out and read it this summer.

question for people who have read the book

(Anonymous) 2013-02-22 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
is it really realistic?

I haven't read the book (nor have much interest to do so, to be honest), but went on a review-reading spree after it came out, and heard people say that small English towns like the one in the book are like that

is it true? I mean, from what I've read of reviews, opinions, descriptions, quotes, etc., the characters sound like depressing caricatures of real people

Well as someone who works in a social services setting, so with characters like those in the book, and in England, I would say it's realistic but life isn't really as grim as she would have it. The thing I love about Britain, having lived in other places, is that it is so mixed, and life is pretty OK for most people. Yes there's people who struggle, and the welfare state is being eroded, but there is a safety net in this country that is at least still there for people. And some pretty good social workers and the like as well.

I was not expecting such a well-rounded and informative answer; thank you!

From a purely political angle, it's realistic enough - not 100 percent of course, extremes are pulled just that much more for the sake of drama. But I used to be a reporter in two small counties in two states, and I've covered various councils, commissions, school boards, etc. for 19 years, and I can tell you the personalities in this book are quite realistic compared to some of the thousands of articles I've had to write in the line of my job.
