I'll admit, Brave and ParaNorman are the only nominees I've seen (I don't see many movies in the theater--as it is, I just saw PN on video a few days ago), so it's possible some of the others are really good, too.
I've read a lot of good things about Pirates!... I should probably rent it soon. (-:

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 12:15 am (UTC)(link)I liked Wreck It Ralph more than I was expecting to. They kept the story pretty tightly focused, and didn't have a ton of extraneous characters each with their own subplot (I'm looking at you Princess & the Frog). WIR also has a lot of background gags, come to think of it. I'm not a big gamer like most of the people I saw it with, but you don't need to be to enjoy it- the gaming references are a bonus, not a major plot requirement.
Re: Oscar predictions, anyone?
Brave might win, but I feel if it does it will win on virtue of having female characters and relationships and the Academy likes that. I don't feel like it actually deserves it.
ParaNorman has a really strong chance, though. Wreck-It Ralph might be off-putting to a lot of people because of the video game angle. I honestly feel it was better, though.

Re: Oscar predictions, anyone?
It does.
I don't care because her character is my favorite, but it is kind of weird.
Re: Oscar predictions, anyone?
I also felt like I was really going to hate Vanellope coming into the movie, but I didn't. I don't like Sarah Silverman, I don't like obnoxious kid characters, but I ended up really liking Vanellope. She feels like an actual little girl with real emotions, and I really understood and empathized what she felt like. I didn't ever feel like we were seeing an adult reaction or an adult's version of a child's reaction, but a little girl's. It makes some mistakes with characterization and the plot, but very few.
What really struck me about the movie was that I had all sorts of expectations about how they'd end up portraying certain characters, what sort of stupid cliches and archetypes they'd go with, but they never did. The characters were consistent and likable and genuine.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 12:08 am (UTC)(link)Best actor: eeeh... Daniel Day-Lewis or Joaquin Phenix.
Short animated film: Paperman
Best song: Skyfall
I hope The Hobbit will get something, they could, but there's competition.
Re: Oscar predictions, anyone?
Best Picture: Argo
Best Director: Spielberg or Lee, but betting on Spielberg
Best Actress: Jennifer Lawrence
Best Actor: DDL
Best S.Actress: Anne Hathaway
Best S.Actor: Total toss-up between Waltz, TLJ, and De Niro. No idea what I'm officially betting.
The category I'm most anxious to see is Best Actress. It's basically down to Lawrence vs. Riva at this point, but I still think Jennifer's got the edge on this one.
Re: Oscar predictions, anyone?
I'd really like to see best picture go to Life of Pi, but that's a long shot. Fingers crossed!
I would like for Best Actress to go to anyone except Jennifer Lawrence.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 01:51 am (UTC)(link)Re: Oscar predictions, anyone?
It's really just the fact that she's Katniss. Everything in like the first fifty pages of the Hunger Games hinted that she was mixed, and yet they cast the whitest person in America and do a half assed job with appearance. Apparently she also brushed this off, but I could never find sources for it.
Unreasonable? Sure.
Re: Oscar predictions, anyone?
(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 02:45 am (UTC)(link)What you call her "down to earth shtick" might very well just be her personality... I think she'd get tired of having to put up an image 24/7, considering all her colleagues speak of her the same way the fans see her.
Re: Oscar predictions, anyone?
She could have not accepted the role but for a semi-beginning in Hollywood, taht would have been totally stupid. Hence why I said my dislike is unreasonable, but it's still there.
