Honestly, the only thing I'm interested in is best animated feature. I hope ParaNorman will win, but I have a feeling Brave will, because it's Pixar.

No way, it's gonna be either ParaNorman or Wreck it Ralph. Brave has no chance. But I wish The Pirates had gotten a larger US release because I LOVED it. It was probably the smartest (fiction) film I saw all year.

Hmm... looking at previous years, I see that there have been years where Disney and Pixar films have lost to other companies (for example, in 2006, Pixar's Cars lost to the WB's Happy Feet), so I guess it does happen from time to time...

I'll admit, Brave and ParaNorman are the only nominees I've seen (I don't see many movies in the theater--as it is, I just saw PN on video a few days ago), so it's possible some of the others are really good, too.

I've read a lot of good things about Pirates!... I should probably rent it soon. (-:

I can't wait to rent The Pirates! and watch it again so I can pause it and look at all the background gags. They show some of them again during the end credits, but there's dozens of them. If you're a Doctor Who fan, you may find David Tennant's voice distractingly familiar though, because he uses the exact same accent as he did as the Doctor.

I liked Wreck It Ralph more than I was expecting to. They kept the story pretty tightly focused, and didn't have a ton of extraneous characters each with their own subplot (I'm looking at you Princess & the Frog). WIR also has a lot of background gags, come to think of it. I'm not a big gamer like most of the people I saw it with, but you don't need to be to enjoy it- the gaming references are a bonus, not a major plot requirement.

ParaNorman was pretty okay, but I feel like Wreck-It Ralph was definitely the best of this year. Probably the best Disney movie since Lilo & Stitch.

Brave might win, but I feel if it does it will win on virtue of having female characters and relationships and the Academy likes that. I don't feel like it actually deserves it.

ParaNorman has a really strong chance, though. Wreck-It Ralph might be off-putting to a lot of people because of the video game angle. I honestly feel it was better, though.

Out of curiosity, is your username from the song "(Song for My) Sugar Spun Sister" by the Stone Roses?

It wasn't, but I do like that song. :)

Honestly, I'm a bit put off of WIR because I saw a review which talked about how it focuses more on the Sarah Silverman character than the title character...

Spoiler Alert:

It does.

I don't care because her character is my favorite, but it is kind of weird.

Well, her story becomes the more important focus of the actual plot, but I don't feel like it focuses more about her feelings than it does Ralph's. They never abandon Ralph's side of the plot, but it becomes intermingled with Vanellope's and a bit overshadowed by it. Ralph actually has a character arc, which Vanellope doesn't, exactly.

I also felt like I was really going to hate Vanellope coming into the movie, but I didn't. I don't like Sarah Silverman, I don't like obnoxious kid characters, but I ended up really liking Vanellope. She feels like an actual little girl with real emotions, and I really understood and empathized what she felt like. I didn't ever feel like we were seeing an adult reaction or an adult's version of a child's reaction, but a little girl's. It makes some mistakes with characterization and the plot, but very few.

What really struck me about the movie was that I had all sorts of expectations about how they'd end up portraying certain characters, what sort of stupid cliches and archetypes they'd go with, but they never did. The characters were consistent and likable and genuine.
