Oh lord are you really trying to say that Sephardic or Mizrahi Jews and Palestinians don't look basically the same

I don't even want to start down this road but there are plenty of brown and black people in Israel who can't live anywhere else (try Christians from African countries who escape to Israel, though honestly, they aren't treated well by the government most of the time)

Israel is really fucked up but its people are just people, just like the Palestinians are just people with fucked up government

I mean, I see a need for the country to exist because the entire world has treated Jewish people like shit basically for the entire history of their civilization, that's all, I'm also not really down for people shitting all over people just because their government sucks

I mean, if you're American or British you really have no room to talk whatsoever. It's always hilarious to see people in industrialized countries with a history of colonization and oppression judge developing countries for the same shit

It's a very similar issue; they're one of many settler cultures.

The difference is that some of the people who got forced out of current Israeli borders into the West Bank, Gaza, and assorted refugee camps are still alive. It's much more recent, and much of it occurred after western colonization began to be widely condemned. To act like Americans or Brits can't condemn this when Americans and Brits make up much of the population condemning American and British colonization and oppression is kind of silly.

Look at it this way: the bulk of the people who exposed Israeli war crimes and ethnic cleansing were/are themselves Israeli. Israeli historians were the ones with access to Israeli archives combined with Hebrew language skills.

I've been watching this wank from afar and having popcorn, but please let me interject with something semi-related:

To act like Americans or Brits can't condemn this when Americans and Brits make up much of the population condemning American and British colonization and oppression is kind of silly. <- No you don't. POC in their respective countries, who have suffered the colonization, oppresion, and its consequences; are the ones who make the most of the population condemning said things, and we are the ones who condemn it the most because we have to deal with it every day.

Big empires have no moral ground to condemn others for something they did before and with more success. Individuals from said empires can (and should) condemn oppression, but they must be aware of the past of their nations as well.

Okay, then. I really hope the US never puts any kind of pressure on Israel or other nations to stop gross human rights violations. I'd hate us to be hypocrites and do something nice for currently alive people.

Lots of ethnic groups have been treated like shit, and lots of ethnic groups sadly will continue to be treated like shit. However elsewhere they work to reintegrate them into a pre-existing country and society. Why is this religious group so special? And why in a part of the world that is and was such a tinderbox? Trying to carve a new country out of a place where people were already living was never going to end well. You can't shove people out of their homeland and tell them that your religion which is not their religion justifies it.

Hey, I should've clarified. I meant pre-1948 zionism, which was made up mostly of Europeans and their immediate descendents. I know Sephardic and Mizrahi Jews are middle eastern!

There are certainly a lot more European Jewish people in Israel now but there was also a MASS EXODUS of Jewish people from Islamic countries in North Africa and the Middle East after the creation of Israel, so a large portion ended up there. Also Ethiopian Jewish people

Exactly: after. It was terrible for many middle eastern countries to expel/pressure Jews out in retaliation for the creation of Israel. However, this happened largely because Israel was created. That's not an excuse for something so horrible but it is the continuity.

A lot of the people emptying out Arab towns in Israel around 1948 were therefore of European descent. A lot of Sephardi had a really hard time for a long time in Israel because they seemed so Arabic (similar music, culture, et cetera) and faced discrimination as a result. This included those who had been living in Israel when it was called Palestine; the newcomers were discriminating against native Jews
