Also like, I'm not saying that dislike of a female character automatically equals internalized misogyny. There are plenty of legitimate reasons to dislike female characters and I don't love every female character I come across either.

But I think it's worth examining your reasons for hating character because sometimes there CAN be internalized misogyny in there.

I was going to say pretty much this. As others have pointed out aplenty, OBVIOUSLY disliking one or even several female characters does not immediately mean you're misogynist. However, if - as seems to have been the case with OP - you dislike almost ALL female characters across a variety of shows? That's a pattern, and it's not unreasonable to at least suspect there might be misogyny at its root.

After all, internalized misogyny doesn't mean you subconsciously hate or even dislike all women. It can be something as simple (yet problematic!) as disliking a woman for being "bitchy" when she refuses to put up with things she doesn't like, while on the other hand admiring a man who acts the same way.

Yes, that's a pattern. A pattern of badly-written female characters. I don't see why you'd rather harp on the OP for hating shit than focusing on the sewer pipes that spew it out.

If a show depicts a man and a woman behaving rather similarly, and the fans look down on the woman for her behavior and not on the man for his, regardless of the writing, misogyny is likely to be the culprit.

Also, just because a show treats a female character badly for her (actually justifiable) behavior doesn't mean the fans have to. Not examining the problems surrounding a female character's portrayal and simply following along with the show's treatment isn't any better. There's a huge difference between, "I hate the way she's handled," and, "I hate her."

I'm not harping on the OP, mind - I don't think internalized misogyny is their problem. I'm just saying, sometimes a fandom's pattern of disliking female characters has nothing to do with bad writing.

I tried to make a really awful metaphor about shit and chocolate and how sometimes people dismiss something as shit when it's actually chocolate, but well. Yes. It was terrible.

I think people are used to dismissing female characters and don't necessarily spend much time thinking about them so maybe there are more well written female characters than you might think if you just give them a chance.

Pretty much. A lot of fans wouldn't spot a well written female character if she was jumping up and down in front of them and waving her arms.

That's not what I meant at all! I fully believe OP when they say they've realized it was bad writing that made them dislike so many female characters!

When I said that a pattern of disliking female characters *might* indicate misogyny, that was meant in response to the people upthread dismissing the possibility of internalized misogyny out of hand as "sjw brainwashing" or something. I actually think it's admirable that OP was willing to examine the idea, and they definitely shouldn't be mocked for it.

I feel like there also might be an issue of quantity. Like there are more male characters in general, so people can find more quality male characters? But like idk. From where I'm sitting, there are a LOT of mediocre male characters too.

I agree. I feel it's sort of a cop-out to say "there aren't enough good female characters". Honestly, from where I'm sitting, there are just never enough good characters, period. Feminists are predictably going to take notice when a female character is treated carelessly, but how many male characters are treated similarly? Just that nobody cares, because you don't have anyone championing their cause like you do with feminists. Should there be more good female characters? Yes. Should there be more good male characters? Yes. Should there be more good characters? Yes. That's all there is to it at the end of the day.
