If you don't like female characters, you've got internalized misogyny? LOLNO.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
This. If I want to hate female characters as much as I hate male characters, I'm damn well going to do so. There's no social obligation to like them just because they happen to have the same bits as I have.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Given how loud the subset of female readers who say it does mean such are, it's not surprising that some of us internalise the worry.

I'll admit it, I don't like most fictional women. I don't like most real women either. I'm female. I've never been popular, attractive, super intelligent or even quirky. I've lived my life mostly isolated from others. Never in the cliques, never asked out, never one of the in-crowd as an adult. Women are the ones who have made me feel like a pariah in society so why should I happily watch their exploits in fiction? I don't want to and I'm not going to apologize for it either.

That's a very good point - a lot of female characters just aren't very well-written.

I think it really depends on what you watch because idk. I find plenty of well written female characters in the TV shows that I watch.

Oh good, someone ID'd the show. It looked up my alley just going by the fashion alone.

I totally feel you on that. Male characters get interesting and nuanced characterization, with quirks and differences from each other. Female characters are frequently just "the chick." It's rare for me to find female characters I really like because so many of them are bland and interchangeable.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Internalized misogyny . Ohhh internet

If someone told me ten years ago that one day people would consider it "~WRONG~" to hate a character if they were your gender, I would have laughed at them and told them that was ten kinds of stupid.

But now with SJWs: "Your race /gender/orientation/identity DEFINES YOU. If someone judges you by them they're a bigoted asshole...but if someone chooses not to treat you differently because of them they're somehow STILL a bigoted asshole because ERASURE" *head...desk...head...desk....head...desk"

SA-Note:

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not saying internalized misogyny is not real. Just that not liking made up characters with the same gender as yourself isn't a sign that you hate your own gender deep down.

SJWs take actual terms and then use them in a kind of "logic" that makes no sense outside of "If you disagree with me you're WRONG. and that's terrible."

It really makes you wonder, what the real goal of the SJW ideology is.

I mean what is the end game for these people?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've pretty much felt like portraying any sort of minority/oppressed group has become a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation :/ It's gotten to the point where I don't take anybody's complaint seriously unless they can rationally and objectively articulate the problem. Otherwise I shrug them off as irrelevant SJWs.

Isn't it funny how they're all for "expressing yourself" and then they're the first to try and pigeonhole people?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I am getting so tired of this "they're female and that's a good enough reason to love them and stan them and get in your face and call you a misogynist if you disagree" trend. Not just because the namecalling gets old really fast, but I feel like it's unbelievably coddling. It's like saying women can't handle being called anything bad for any reason, and must be protected and pampered at all costs. Fuck off, that sort of thinking belongs in the '50s.

Sometimes there are shitty female characters, and I will dislike a shitty character regardless of gender. Disliking a female character is not misogyny. Disliking a character because she's female is misogyny. Nothing more than that.

Also like, I'm not saying that dislike of a female character automatically equals internalized misogyny. There are plenty of legitimate reasons to dislike female characters and I don't love every female character I come across either.

But I think it's worth examining your reasons for hating character because sometimes there CAN be internalized misogyny in there.

Tumblr, ontd_p, sf_d, etc got to you, didn't they?

Disliking female characters =/= internal misogyny. It does only when you hate them for being female or because you think they're some how interfering with your epic slash. That last thing is usually the reason, which is just silly.

Disliking characters that just so happen to fall under whichever category de jour the SJWs have glommed onto, does not make you a racist, sexist, homophobe, abilist, etc. or whathaveyou. All disliking a fictional character means, is that you simply don't like said character. It's not all that deep.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, not liking specific female characters doesn't necessarily make you misogynist. However, not liking any? I have to wonder. As there are a bunch of well written female characters out there. And a ton of poorly written male characters that are often loved. (Don't even get me started on fandoms where people hated female characters before they were introduced, literally just because they were female and the fans were concerned that they would be love interests. I would hope you wouldn't be like that, considering you did say you examined why you don't like female characters and determined it was writing, but there are a ton of people like that out there.)

I'm worried about people who believe female characters are inherently less interesting/relatable/likable than male characters - without realizing it's the fault of mainstream fiction that simply doesn't put as much effort into writing the lady characters.

It's even worse when young authors adopt that belief into their own original fiction and fill their stories with male characters because "eh, women just aren't interesting to me" instead of actually writing the kind of women that are up to their standards. It makes me sad.

Just here for the Bomb Girls love. ♥ There are definitely other shows out there with well-written female characters, but Bomb Girls is one of the best imo.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
BOMB GIRLS! <3 <3 <3

And not liking one ore more female characters is not sexist. Otoh, not liking female characters in general as a cathegory, or being less interested in them because they're women..well, that kinda makes me wonder.
