Seconding the Tanith Lee books. Almost anything by Tanith Lee is worth reading; her fantasies, her horrors, her SF, her YAs, her children books....

David Gerrold has some very cool books. I'm not sure if it's still in print, but Voyage of the Star Wolf was really enjoyable.

Ray Bradbury's books are listed as SF, and are very lyrical. My favorites are Dandelion Wine and The Illustrated Man, though Farenheit 451 is very cool.

If you like short stories, go find a collection of Harlan Ellison.

Jane Yolen has a respective collection of YA fantasy/SF novels.

There's still time, anon. David Bowie is immortal.

All last season I bagged on Mira. I felt like her relationship with Spartacus was just bad writing... it didn't seem believable to me. Practically every fiber of his being had been devoted to the memory of Sura, and I sort of assumed that his total fidelity to her would continue post-mortem. I didn't buy that he could switch tracks so easily from SuraSuraSuraSura to OH HEY, it's Mira. (Andy!Spartacus was able to maintain that totally broken quality and emotional distance and between himself and Mira, which was totally lacking in Liam!Spartacus' interactions with her.)

But now that Mira is gone, I see why we needed her. She humanized Spartacus. We saw him talk about things other than war and plans and strategy. We saw the man on a personal scale. Now that he doesn't have an intimate confidante, he's become much more of the one-dimensional leader on a pillar. He's bigger than himself, and is now more legend than man. We as the viewers have lost that personal connection to him. He's got less screen time so far this season, and I think we're supposed to feel as removed from him as the average individual in the Rebel horde. He's now more of an archetype than an actual person.

I do remember seeing and hearing a little of that, but nothing major. Probably because I never delved into the fandoms too deeply, but I agree it's ridiculous to get angry about such things.

Not saying everyone has to ship those pairings (I don't like most of them myself, but I don't wish they weren't in the games), but... That's a huge overreaction.

Oh, fandom.

Re: Platonic male/female friendships you love

[personal profile] diet_poison 2013-03-01 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
I get super fuzzy friend feels for Harry and Hermione =3 like several other people apparently lol.

Dave and Rose from Homestuck.
Zelda (or Tetra) and Link from pretty much every Zelda game
Yugi and Téand from YGO DM.
Rukia and Renji from Bleach.

I know I'm forgetting some.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-01 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Gonna have to agree here, the whole alicorn thing only becomes problematic if the pony species were supposed to be analogues of human races, and they aren't, (unless there some ethnicity out there hiding its super secret magic powers from the rest of us).

never heard of this series (though i'm curious now)

but i definitely love a lot of tropes that i wouldn't enjoy if the genders were reversed. i think the older lady/younger dude is definitely one of them.

Ugh this. Even when the customer is nice and all, I really don't want to hear anyone's reasoning/life story - especially if we are busy. I know that sounds crass but meh..

Have you ever met someone who you thought you could be really great friends with and you got along really well and then they sort of...stopped contacting you? like, they sort of dropped off the face of the earth? because I have. I've been pretty lonely for a long time; the few friends I have aren't in the same country. Then I met this person and it was so great to have someone that I could talk to and be excited to hang out with and then it didn't go anywhere. I really thought things would turn around for me and I'd be able to have a group of friends with similar interests, but alas.

I have no reason to believe they went away because of me, personally; I really just think they have their own lives and circumstances just didn't match. I'm ok with that. It's just the feeling of having something I really, really wanted being dangled in front of my face and then yanked away. Like, wtf, life? It's fucking frustrating.

Thirding PKD, also Valis (same author).

Ursula Le Guin, her standalone books include The Dispossessed, Lathe of Heaven and The Left Hand of Darkness. Warning, all those books are short but very very thinky.

Octavia Butler, Wild Seed.

Neuromancer. Yes it is part of a trilogy but it doesn't end on a cliffhanger so you don't need to read the following two books. (Though you should want to.)

Any of the Heinlein juveniles are good. Rocket Ship Galileo, Tunnel in the Sky, Podkayne of Mars, Starship Troopers.

Fallen Angels (Niven/Pournelle just FYI, they are far right in their politics and were at the time of the writing of the book climate change deniers) is actually not bad, but I'm a sucker for meta, so ymmv. Also Barry Malzberg but his stuff is much, much, much harder to find.

Howard Wladrop, Them Bones.

Robert Silverberg, Dying Inside.

Rudy Rucker's White Light isn't to everyone's taste but I didn't mind it. I'm not a fan of how he frames his fiction (why did everyone in the 80s have to have a manifesto, seriously).

Schismatrix, Bruce Sterling. It's not great, but it passes the time. Same with Heavy Weather, which was marginally better.

For horror, Wetbones, by John Shirley (note that this is REAl horror not the usual pablum that passes for horror these days).

Greenhouse Summer, Norman Spinrad. Climate change taken to its logical conclusion. Eerie when you consider we are actually facing this very scenario in our lifetimes.

Cat's Cradle, by Kurt Vonnegut. If you read no other book on this list read that one!

That's all I can think of. Happy reading OP!

I suppose it's doable, but his/their life is complicated enough without also trying to deal with two girlfriends... I think he's best off finding a girl who likes both Jackson and Holt.

I've watched a lot worse based on a lot less! Haha, I'll check it out sometime. I've always been attracted to the cover of...I think the first season? But I never dove into it. Thanks!
