I think we can logic that if she didn't intend to have more then the alicorns introduced at the beginning, there were no plans in motion for alicorns.

This was Hasbro's decision, pure and simple.

The op of this subthread talked about wanting ideas to float around free and disconnected from specific voices, which is at best a nice lie because all ideas have sources and those sources must be thought about.

i'm sorry but i disagree. i'm afraid that i'm unwilling to get into it because it is an utterly long argument. i've had the most dismal experience of going through the process before, and have no wish to repeat it.

i'm so glad you felt the need to hint at your credentials. truly, i do understand now why you are against the proposal. unwise in your case, as it must be said, but understood at any rate.

Oh man that is a tough question. It would help a lot if you could say something about what your preferences are, or what you like, or what your taste is, or what you're looking for - in terms of subgenres, or topics, or things like that.

Other people have said Philip K Dick, and I definitely agree with that. Same with William Gibson. Also - Lord of Light, by Roger Zelazny, is a phenomenal book. The Stars My Destination, by Alfred Bester. Downbelow Station, by CJ Cherryh. Startide Rising, by David Brin. Stations of the Tide, by Michael Swanwick. Lois McMaster Bujold. And of course classics like Dune and Asimov's work and stuff like that.

Also you should check out short stories! Because there's a ton of great short science fiction. Check out the Science Fiction Hall of Fame Volume 1, and decent collections from people like Harlan Ellison, Theodore Sturgeon, James Tiptree, and also from the usual big names and people like Ursula K LeGuin.

Man, I love science fiction. Again, if you have any specific kind of thing you're looking for, that would help out a lot.

Or it could be both, Faust could have pitched the alicorn twilight idea and then Hasbro decided to run with it and mandate it at the end of season 3 rather than a potential series finale, or it could have been planned by the writers far enough in advance for Hasbro to start making toys of it since the episode was supposedly written back in 2011.

Either way, the toys don't always follow the show or vice versa, we've still yet to see any mention or hint of princess Skyla despite existing as a toy for a year now, and we are only now starting to see models of background characters that have been hanging around since season 1.

No, but it's a metaphor. Not all races are equal in equestria. We saw there were class devides in past equestria... the ponies have only been made to think they are equal now under a new ruling class.

But we can see, only one type will ever get to become rulers. They are inherently unequal.

I thought I'd been in some pretty stupid parts of the Internet, but I guess not, if there's actually people out there who think that.

I didn't dislike Mira as a person. I just didn't "see" that relationship. I agree she humanized him, but I think they could have written it more interestingly.

Next part contains spoilers for...well, history.

As with Spartacus becoming more of an archetype now (and I must admit I'm behind on viewing), I think that would make sense.

I mean, unless they're going to retcon the shit out of history, things are not ending well for him...and at least some of his men. So it would make sense to distance him from the audience emotionally, because he's going to end up on a Roman cross.

If they're planning on some side characters to survive (and I'm not sure they are) it would make sense to put them more in the spotlight over time, and to distance themselves from Spartacus a bit to cushion the blow.

I love classics like Robert Heinlein, myself. Tunnel in the Sky is one of my favorite books ever. Although you do have to keep in mind the time period, because there's a bunch of casual sexism and racism from a modern standpoint, though his writing was progressive for its time.

Actually, I agree. I think every romance but Tali, Garrus, and Liara were handled terribly in ME3. Jacob's was by far the worst, but followed by Thane.

Still, a very large portion of Thane fans explicitly wanted him to survive, not just to die better.

I would tell you to go read the Vorkosigan saga but they generally don't meet your criteria. I assume 14 books (+2 in the same universe but out of main continuity) falls under the umbrella of "a thousand". Although you could just read the first two, the Cordelia books (Shards of Honor and Barrayar) and decide from there if you want in on the series aspect. The books have gotten longer as the series goes on, my omnibus of the two (called Cordelia's Honor) is 590 pages but that's TWO novels.

Oh! The Witches of Karres by James Schmitz is very under-appreciated but it's very funny and short. I'm not 100% sure if it should be classified as fantasy or SF but there's space travel and the witches are aliens so I'll go with SF.

That's why you say "inb4" before your post or as a / postscript. I know it kind of ruins the joke, but it's just another one of those things that helps people understand that you are being sarcastic.

I thought JKR said during an interview that it was purely a mistake on her part that there were only 40 kids in Harry's year when there were supposed to be thousands of students in the school... though it does work in a reversed "Oh yeah I totally meant that all along" way.

I completely get this. I shipped them before they were canon. I loved the idea of them. I don't ship Remus/Sirius at all (James/Sirius all the way). But the way they were written was so bad it completely turned me off this ship.
