Hostile classmate- help?

I need your help guys. :(

I have three (3-hour long) classes with this one guy. He's in his forties, and really opinionated and outspoken. Which would normally be okay, except he's also one of those people who derides other people for not agreeing with him, and he becomes progressively more loud and hostile when you disagree.

And then he holds a grudge against you for this, and asks you inappropriate questions at inappropriate times, like, "You don't like me very much, do you," stuff like that.

This isn't just my perception of him. Everyone who comes in contact with him agrees that he's a very volatile, angry, abrasive guy.

Unfortunately, his attitude toward me and others has caused me a good deal of anxiety. If I try to ignore him, he forcibly engages me and baits me into speaking to him with insults. If I try to argue with him, he gets hostile. If I tell him to go away, he gets hostile.

What the fuck do I do? He's in one of my groups for a huge assignment, so I have to talk to him about group stuff.

His treatment of me and others makes literally my physical state decline. After one of his tantrums today, my blood pressure and pulse skyrocketed, I got flushed and woozy. I don't think this is a good reaction to have, especially when I can't get away from him.

I am also working from the assumption that what the OP, me and the rest of the world are suffering from is a kink called 'finding Bruce Willis incredibly attractive', a possible symptom of which is slashing him with actors who are supposed to be his adult son)

I think the whole ascent thing was planned to happen eventually. It's not that complicated an idea, actually, I don't see why a little girl couldn't understand it.

Robert Heinlein was extremely progressive for science fiction at the time, but I don't think particularly progressive more generally. And that's more because of the weirdness of SF than anything else. I mean, I think Heinlein's political views in general are confusing and not easy to trace, and in a lot of ways probably weren't entirely clear in his own mind, and so I'm not attacking him or saying that he was a terrible person. But I don't think that he was hugely ahead of his time either.

I definitely agree that he's worth reading, though. At least his early work is usually pretty good. Moon Is A Harsh Mistress is a really good novel, and he has some great short stories too ("-All You Zombies-" is great fun).

And most of her comments are pretty similar: I'M GOING TO YELL SOMETHING SARCASTIC THAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUNNY BUT USUALLY DOESN'T ADD ANYTHING TO THE DISCUSSION! And it's always on gender or body-image related secrets. I don't get the point.

That isn't what I said...or perhaps I am not making myself clear. Given that I've been called a robot, superhuman, and now a moron and a troll ITT I'm losing my patience here.

I mean generally, I am not looking for a relationship rn, so when I look at people of either gender I see them as people...not as objects/attractive vs. unattractive etc. If I was looking for a relationship, I'm sure I would categorize people like that (though it's unfair IMO).

Just because I said I have had problems with the opposite gender in the past (which is true) did not imply anything about sexual orientation, nor did I intend for it to. That got brought up out of the blue.

No problem! If you watch, I hope you enjoy! If nothing else, there is lots of eye-candy in this show, both of the male and female persuasion. Also, the seasons are short; they average 10-13 episodes (there are three seasons), plus a six episode mini-series. So it's not too much to catch up on either. They tend to fly by for me.

I honestly don't know in the book, but depending on the musical (and in the movie), Javert

1. Shows up when Fantine is being sacked, distracted Valjean from Fantine's plight
2. Tries to arrest Fantine when the douche claims Fantine hurt him with no provocation
3. Tries to stop Valjean from fulfilling Fantine's final request

It's not quite enough for me personally to not ship Valjean/Javert, but it's enough for there to have to be some serious repentance on Javert's part for it to make sense. >_>

Hmm. What about the Kaidan romance? Fans seemed to be happy with that - and actually, I hear Liaramancers still complain about theirs at times.

Yeah, there was a drive to cure Thane, but I thought turning around and saving him in ME3 would have cheapened his character a bit (partly because you know he's going to die the second you meet him in 2). I just don't like that he wasn't even acknowledged after his death at all, except by Shepard and Kai Leng.

Any of Ursula Le Guin's sci-fi books. My favorite is The Lathe of Heaven, but I'm not sure if that's quite as sci-fi-ish as you'd want? The Left Hand of Darkness and The Dispossessed are more obviously sci-fi, and both are also really good.

My credentials are more or less meaningless in this com except that, again, context and exposition are kind of my thing. Also I don't like being called stupid for no discernible reason, especially when it's couched the way you put it.

I respect your decision to end the argument. However, the fact that you so cutely said that you know my thought process is "simplistic" because I "unfortunately" use a pseudonym makes this entire exchange hilarious.

Went through something similar this week and.. it sucks. Only in my case they're still around, but don't seem to show interest in me, or maybe I'm imagining it. Anyway, I feel your pain. :(
