Ships you have nothing against, but are everywhere?

[identity profile] with-rainfall.livejournal.com 2013-03-02 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
This is mostly an excuse for me to rant about Rachel/Tobias. I have nothing against the ship itself, but I'm starting to dislike seeing it because of how much it's written. Anyone else wish their fandom's darlings would just vanish from fic for a day?

Johnlock (not ACD Holmes/Watson, though).
because there's so much bad stuff for it that gives me second-hand embarrassment.

And today I got weirded out by Thilbo. I went to AO3 to see if there are any new works featuring Gandalf (he's my favourite character, and I like Gandalf&Bilbo epic friendship), and

Ah, Thilbo. I don't mind if people ship it (ship and let ship!) but, and it rarely happens to me, the fandom's OTP is not my OTP as well. So I just skim over the Thilbo fics, unless the plot is really interesting.

Seconding Thorin/Bilbo. I started out mostly shipping those two but when a pairing starts really being the most shipped pairing (I'm still a bit surprised about the runner-ups, to be honest) and the fanfiction quality slowly starts declining (it's not really that bad for this pairing though) and the portmonteaux start being annoying instead of cute/funny, I move on to rarer pairs.
I don't mind the pairing and will still occasionally read and write it, but I no longer actively look for it.

Thirding Thilbo. I don't dislike reading it (except modern AUs, but then I hate modern (not middle-earth) AUs) but when that's all there is I end up grinding my teeth and skipping past them. You need a varied diet when it comes to reading as well, I find.

JOHNLOCK IS EVERYWHERE.

I'm cool with that but it always used to bother me when people would treat it like it was canon when really not everyone (including me) shipped it.

You have to go to rec lists to find anything good. I think there's a lot of spectacular writers in that fandom but its so big you have to pare down the sheer volume of fics to even find anything.

Dio/Lucciola from Last Exile. I love them too, but there are other freaking characters in that show people.

CaptainSwan, or whatever Hook/Emma is called. They're re-writing what they had originally planned for the show because of the ~oh my god, my panties! He is so hawt, oh my god, water on deck!" reaction from the female fanbase. I lol every time someone says they have a *spark* or something. Making a bunch of dick/rape jokes and then oogling her mother ~totally~ means they are connected. Yeahhhhh.

Re: Ships you have nothing against, but are everywhere?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-03 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
Argh, this. Okay, I guess I have something against it, but it's not a rival ship. I don't ship Emma with anyone. But can't the writers come up with another sociopathic asshole to pair Hook with? I get it, the actor is hot. He's a good actor. He's really good at playing a sociopath. I don't get why anyone who likes Emma's character would want her with him, because he's a massive douchebag.

UGGGGGGGH yes.

Screw that asshole. I hope they leave him in that basement in New York forever.

It doesn't help that the actors and writers have been saying ship-teasy things about it either. NO. WRITERS, NO. PLEASE DO NOT GO THERE. PLEASE DO NOT GIVE IN TO THE FANBASE ON THIS ONE.

Dean/Castiel. I don't hate it or anything, (as a matter of fact, I ship it myself) but I wish it would just ... go away for a while. This show is not about Dean and Castiel's epic romance and never will be can I just enjoy cute brothers killing monsters by myself for a while

Oh this! I don't care, I don't watch Supernatural*, but by God some of the Supernatural fans on my tumblr. feed does not know how to tag their posts... And oddly enough most of the stuff they don't tag is the Dean/Castiel gifs. speculations and so on.

*And if I keep getting spoilers I will never need to start watching, though that is apparently a wise decision?

I don't watch the show, but I think I ship that through fandom osmosis.

BUT, I admit that it surprises me that the fans would have you think this is an epic that's been around from the beginning of the show (despite the angels only being in the latter half?) and this grand and usty otp.

Although it's either that or wincest I guess I don't know.

Steve/Tony in the Avengers fandom. I actually like the pairing, but I am VERY sick of it showing up as a side pairing in non-Steve/Tony fic. Sometimes I just want to read Clintasha with no fucking side pairings.

Jeff/Annie in Community. I don't even have any feelings about it, I just find the pairing to be excessively boring and yet they are the biggest pairing by a wide margin. Like, they have their own LJ comm that is very active and enough people to have legit fic fests and like a third of the fics on AO3 and easily half on ff.net are theirs. And I just find the pairing to be so not compelling that I can't read it.

In comparison, the pairing with the second most number of stories is Troy/Abed and it's so tiny that half of the stories written in the past two months for the pairing have been mine and I have personally greeted or talked to the majority of the people on tumblr who ship it.

*sigh*

Rachel/Tobias from Animorphs? I'm surprised to see anything from that series.

Arata/Chihaya and Chihaya/Taichi from Chihayafuru (the main characters and love triangle).
I can't say I'm annoyed because I ship both of them and can even write for them but it's everywhere and I would like to see more of the others wonderfull characters.

ARGH Rachel/Tobias bothered me even in the books. My favorite in fanfic Marco/Ax, even though it was kind of pair-the-spares.

Pairings that are fucking everywhere that I had nothing against at first: Clint/Coulson is the worst, followed by Clint/Natasha, since Avengers is currently my main fandom.

Arthur/Eames. I've never understood how it got so popular, considering that they barely have a personality.

Has no one said Sterek? I'm going to say Sterek. I started off shipping it, then feeling really tepid about it, and now, though I have nothing against it or shippers, I'd really rather not read it. Thanks for letting me exclude the Sterek tag, AO3!

Just about everything in Legend of Korra, because wank about what's canon, what's endgame, what's not endgame, and who are bad people for shipping it anyway mostly drowns out the fantasy aspects of the show.

Every time requests open up on the Hetalia kink meme, I hope that maybe we can go just this one round-- or even just the first page-- with no USUK prompts. And I ship USUK.

For that matter, Hetalia fic in general tends to be full of gratuitous side-shipping and it's mostly pairings that I like or don't care about but am tired of seeing.

Lina Inverse/Gourry Gabriev from Slayers. I don't mind it as such - they're practically canon anyway (perpetual will-they-or-won't-they stage) - but I'm not really interested in them either, so I'd love to see fewer stories about them and more about other pairings. Especially when it comes to smut.

Red/Green from Pokémon. It's everywhere, it's super popular and it does nothing for me.
