They only problem I had with the movie was the car/plane chase scene was way too over the top. Never mind that it didn't happen in real life.

But other than that, it was a pretty good movie.

Haha yeah that ending was... a little too Hollywood and over the top. I don't know why they did that, it was tense enough as it was

[personal profile] mekkio 2013-03-05 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. That scene made the movie go from a taut thriller to, "Oh, come on, Hollywood, really? Really?"

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved the tension of it. But yeah, IRL they just got on the plane.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much the same. The scene shortly before they board where one of the "houseguests" who was most skeptical talks with the guards as the "story board artist" was my favorite part, I think. That part was really suspenseful and it was just a scene of people being courageous in a way that's believable extrapolation with the actual events.

I don't know, I'll almost always pick suspense over "action", the way most recent action films do "action." That was my main complaint of the treatment of Ricki Tarr's subplot in TTSS- I get the constraints of condensing 7 episodes of dense plot into one film, but why punch up the "action" so much when the intrigue is so much more interesting? That and Tom Hardy is the cast member who least lives up to his miniseries counterpart, Hywel Bennett.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
The main issue is people from the US not getting that not everyone with a Spanish last name is a PoC. Some are, you know, Spanish.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, exactly this.
mekkio: (Default)

[personal profile] mekkio 2013-03-05 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Correction: SOME people from the US.

There are plenty of Americans out there who get that. Mainly Hispanics who would never be considered PoC. (Like myself. I am Irish-Puerto Rican and I would never in a million years be called a PoC with my fair skin and hair that turns blond in the summer.)

Like there was flack about Disney's Princess Sofia for not looking "Hispanic" enough when Disney said she was. Thing is, there is an actual Princess of Sofia of Spain. And she looks like this;

This is what a Hispanic can look like. As well as having a million different other looks. There is no set ethnic look. Anyone who says otherwise is ignorant.

Tony Mendez isn't Spanish, he's half Mexican. Though I don't really care because a) Mexicans, even full-blooded Mexicans, can have light skin, and b) Mendez himself has said that he barely even identifies with his Mexican heritage.

FOR A PROPER DISCUSSION/COMPARISON

This is what the real Tony Mendez looked liked in the '70s.

This is Ben Affleck as Tony Mendez.

So, what do you guys think?

I'm guessing you mean the SJW wank over Tony Mendez being Hispanic or not. I agree, I didn't see any issues either. And I feel bad for those people and their SJW issues causing them to "boycott" Argo (and, similarly, blindly praise Life of Pi because it had minorities in it--personally, I hated Life of Pi because I thought it worked better as a book than as a CGI-filled movie)--to me, Argo isn't that bad, and I bet they'd like the film as well if they didn't follow Tumblr SJ like lemmings.

I mean, Argo could've been like Crash as directed by Paul Haggis.

I loved it.

Argo was okay. I know they had to Hollywood it up to make things more exciting but I thought it just went too far. I hated the fact that the movie tries to give most of the credit to the CIA and claims that Canada only got credit to avoid an international incident. Even Jimmy Carter admits Canada did like 90% of the work to get those six Americans to safety, yet you wouldn't know it from the movie. Carter has no reason to lie especially since its been 30 years since the incident.

What I got from the movie that it really wasn't even the CIA who saved them but Hollywood. If it wasn't for Hollywood setting up the cover story complete with fake press junket, the CIA wouldn't had a prayer. The alternative plans the CIA came up with were all horrible and almost guaranteed to fail. So, it was up to Hollywood to save the day.

I thought they'd fixed that after many people who knew what really went down complained.

I'm totally with you, OP. I totally loved Argo, and had no idea until you posted this secret that there was controversy over it.

As far as the controversy itself...eh, Louie C.K. and Lynda Carter are half-Latino/a. Not everyone looks exactly like your stereotypical idea of Latino. If the real Tony Mendez has a particularly "Latino look" (stereotypically, I mean), then I'll agree. But if he doesn't look it, I'm cool with an actor as talented as Ben Affleck playing him.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
No, he doesn't have a look at all, one way or another. There's a reason Mendez is a master of disguise. He could pull off any look they needed him to.

People don't seem to realize that "white" and "Hispanic" are not mutually exclusive. In fact, many official documents make the distinction between "White Hispanic" and "White Not Hispanic" as racial categories. Many Hispanic people have light skin and even light eyes and hair.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea what the controversy over this is??! I assumed the secret was about not wanting to see it for the same reasons I don't: because it looks like propaganda about a bunch of Americans triumphing over the two-dimensional crazy brown people. I'm Canadian and some of my best friends are Iranian. I didn't want to spend money on something that seemed likely to anger me.
If anyone can tell me otherwise I might go see it!

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
You do realize that it's about a thing that actually happened, right? And that the fact that you have Iranian friends doesn't mean that Iran, the country, doesn't ever do bad things?

Still grumpy about the implication in the movie that Canada stole all the credit. Umm, they kind of actually did all the work :|

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
OP it's an amazing film. In fact they don't make them like that normally these days, which is why I think it's won every award for best film.

Yeah they didn't do all the things IRL, but then how many historical dramas reflect real events? I can't think of one example where it's not been fictionalised.
