Yeah, Michiru always came off as oddly catty and shallow. But hell, lesbians are allowed to have character flaws too, and it would be boring if they made them a perfect couple.

If we're talking the manga here, then yes, there's not much else but all of the characters who aren't Usagi, Mamoru, and Chibiusa are like that (well, Hotaru had a decent arc too).

If this is the anime however, nope, not even close. Go watch eps 17 and 21 of Sailor Moon S again.

They're really cute together, and in Sailor Moon world cute counts for a lot.

The fact that some of the letters were shadowed made me think there might be a secret message in this secret, but I couldn't find one.

Maybe I'm just missing it though. *eyes suspiciously*

You seem pretty set on hating Michiru, but I think this meta (http://adventuresofcomicbookgirl.tumblr.com/post/20157846817/lets-talk-about-michiru-kaioh-for-some-reason) sums up how much more there is to her if you're interested.

She's not one of my favorites so I haven't paid her much attention either, but I really love that in a butch/femme relationship she's the one wearing the pants, hands down. I also seem to recall her getting some level of premonitions, using the mirror maybe? That sounds like kind of a big thing even if it doesn't get much on-screen attention.

Ugggh, damn it, I only ever watched the Notoriously Shitty Dub and have the hardest times telling what people are talking about when they use the Japanese names. I know of most of them now, but they aren't the first names for the characters that pop into my head. This secret is about Uranus/Neptune, with mentions of Sailor Moon and Tuxedo, right? I'm not missing anything else?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yes Michiru = Neptune and Haruka = Uranus and Mamoru = Tuxedo Mask.

Don't feel bad I think OP watched the dub too because they used "scouts" instead of "soldiers".

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
You should really watch the original, non-dubbed show. It's very different and fabulous. Yes, Michiru is Neptune (Michelle? Not up on the NA names--I never watched the dub past season 2, iirc) and Haruka is Uranus.

iirc, in the dub they were "close" cousins, but in the original show they were lesbian lovers and it was/is very close to actual text and not just subtext. Naoki even said so in an interview that they were canon. They had lines like, "Michiru, I told you I don't want to hear that kind of talk out of bed!", after M. teased H. about gaining weight after grabbing her and hauling her up after H fell off a cliff? building? And holding hands (heck in one ep, for Valentine's Day (or something like it) the ep had a contest for couples where one hid and stuck their hand out and their partner had to guess which hand was their partner's (Haruka quickly and clearly identified Michiru's hand and said it way too easy)), addressing each other w/o any of the suffixes (-chan, -san, etc.) at end of their names (that implies a very close intimacy in Japanese culture; mainly husbands and wives that are very, very close to each other was the way it was explained to me). Haruka gets jealous when Michiru flirts w/others, esp. Seiya, etc.

Reading about the name changes in the dub makes me so happy that the German dub never did that and still treated Haruka and Michiru as a couple (they even left in all the sexual innuendos between the two which is awesome in retrospect <3).

If you dislike her that's fine, but saying she's empty completely contradicts canon.

She is graceful, elegant, mature, driven, brave and determined. She also likes to tease and she can paint, play the violin and swim really fast.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
IMO she is underutilized since pretty much all forms of canon give more focus to Haruka in their relationship, but she's lightyears away from "empty". I think if people don't get a good impression of her it's mainly the fault of the two of them almost always being together?

I really do wish they had split the two of them up more often, actually. The (very) few times that they were allowed to interact with other characters without each other were all pretty fun. (I will always regret the only time Michiru and Rei got partnered up was during the Nehelenia arc in Stars, they seem like they'd make a very good duo)

Okay, first off, I beg of you, and everyone else too: If you're going to use Japanese names like Usagi/Mamoru/Haruka/Michiru, don't use "Scouts." That's a dub term only, one that makes very little sense (they don't sell friggin' cookies, nor do they look for things). If you are discussing the Japanese version, use Senshi, Soldiers, Warriors, Guardians, whatever. But please stop with the Scouts. Mixing info from the two versions is confusing.

Second, I think you have fundamentally misunderstood Michiru's character. Haruka is the one who puts on the tough exterior, but is really very emotionally vulnerable and has trouble coping with the massive responsibilities of her mission. Michiru is traditionally feminine so people would stereotypically think she's the emotionally vulnerable one, but has an absolute will of steel. And although she knew the importance of their mission, she loved Haruka so much she tried to talk her out of accepting the transformation stick. She didn't want her to have to live with the kind of burden that multiple necessary sacrifices would cause. It's possible you haven't seen Stars yet (SPOILER ALERT if you haven't), but one more thing that solidifies her strong will is one of her last words in the series - "I can endure anything if I'm with you. Even the fires of Hell." She faces death head-on, fearlessly, because she completes Haruka as much as Haruka completes her.

I suspect you're trying to justify your ship to yourself more than anything else. If you watched the same series I did, there's no way you could say that Michiru has no personality otherwise. Ship Usagi/Haruka all you want. Just don't bullshit.

"At least Mamoru isn't as empty as Michiru" Maybe in the manga, but not in the anime.
Also, seconding the love for Michiru being the "femme" in the relationship but totally being the dominant one.

So basically you're a butthurt Haruka/Usagi fan yourself.

Man, let's be frank: Sailor Moon is about how a girl saves the world and gains a harem that is 99% women in the process.

If a character's personality isn't beating you over the head every time they're in focus, they obviously don't have one.
