Gaining weight, how?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-11 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
How do you manage to eat regularly and healthily when you're unemployed and depressed? :( Doing the whole breakfast lunch dinner thing... and getting off my ass to cook for myself instead of using microwave meals...

The lady at the lingerie shop told me not to loose any more weight when she measured me, that kind of scared me.

You're unemployed and depressed.... and you want to GAIN weight? I think a lot of people wish they had that problem....

Not cool, pal. Just because OP is underweight not overweight doesn't make it any less of an issue.

Re: Gaining weight, how?

Well, I think starting to do it helps you continue do it - once you get into a routine of cooking, it's a lot easier to keep it up. You just have to go out, get the food, and get to a point where you feel comfortable cooking, where it's normal to you. That helps a lot. The other thing to bear in mind is that cooking for yourself is often both cheaper and tastier so that's a benefit.

I don't know. I know it can be hard when you're depressed but there's no way to start except starting, and I find that making the effort to do one thing makes it a lot easier to keep doing things. But it's probably different for me because I really like cooking and it's something that I can do to take my mind off things (and also I'm more likely to eat more when I'm depressed, not less).

da

also, it takes two months for a new routine to settle into habit in your brain!! manage that long and you're golden (barring severe circumstances like that depression op mentioned. op, can you see a therapist/psychologist about that? :( )

I'm in the same boat. Not at the point of needing to gain weight, but definitely needing to learn how to feed myself.

Re: Gaining weight, how?

I suggest speaking to a doctor or nutritionist before starting any weight-gaining. The lady at the lingerie shop really shouldn't be giving out medical advice.

....so I'm the only one who finds it odd OP is getting measured (usually a surefire sign you're going to lay out a not-insignificant sum of money) on lingerie, when they are by their own words unemployed?

Priorities, OP. You need some. Go for the dollar store gramma undies and spend that money on FOOD. JMO.

I do have a bmi under 16 its not just what she told me. I don't think there's any harm in gaining weight.

oh, also, how much do you sleep? I used to sleep too much and that (compounded with other things) kept me on the underweight side of things

Re: Gaining weight, how?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-11 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
That makes a lot of sense! I smoke too (cue people flaming me for being unemployed and a smoker?)... that really doesn't help I guess. But the sleep thing I actually feel confident I could work on. Thanks :)

Have you tried building muscle? If you have any weights (you can improvise with soup cans or water balloons till you need heavier ones), try doing some lifting everyday. Eat a lot of protein afterwards to build muscle and weight.

This is armchair fitness advice on my part, but people I know have gained weight this way. If you don't have any medical issues maybe you can give this a try.

not op

to add to this, I remember finding an awesome exercise (I can't find the page again :( ) that involved holding yourself up with your arms, and try to stay there for a while (like, say, 30 seconds), and then try to build up to increments (45 seconds, 1 minute, 1 minute 30 seconds, etc.)

here, I made a handy diagram:

if you can't manage, to build up to that you can start by making pushups against a good sturdy wall

also, for your legs, I've found that doing this and staying for as long as I can (only a few minutes orz) has made my legs stronger:

alternatively, read this thread, now that the paywall is down for the time being and you can see it without registering:

Try making huge meals and then eating leftovers of what you cooked, this way you don't have to cook as often.

I kind of assumed that everyone does this so I didn't mention it.

But yes, do this. Everyone do this. If nothing else, it's much more economical.

Breakfast is really important when I'm trying to gain weight but it's also the meal I'm most likely to want to eat light at. I'll usually have multigrain toast topped with a runny fried egg, melted cheese, and some turkey bacon and a cup of greek yogurt with granola and fruit.

But I never put on weight as quick as when I have a peanut-butter, bannana, and chocolate ice-cream milkshake after dinner. And eat avocadoes smushed up with your favorite kind of cheese between meals. You can eat it on toast or with tortilla chips.

Still try and eat healthy -- just eat more of it and top whatever you can with cheese or sour cream.

I like to eat a lot of vegetables so when I'm putting on weight I fry those babies in butter and throw in onions and turkey bacon. Works for a lot vegetables. Broccoli is always great with cheese and garlic as well.

This might help: http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/how-to-gain-weight
Basically, eat healthy, eat often, and eat more high calorie foods (add cheese to your eggs, etc.) according to the articles I've read. I'm trying to lose myself, so I'm kinda envious. :)

Also, try googling how to gain weight.

"How do you manage..."
I don't :( I have to force myself, or have meals in public/with another person tbh. I find that company helps in trying to match the size of the meal, as well as someone chattering on helps distract me from drowning in my own head

Also, shouldn't you actually talk to a doctor or nutritionist if you're concerned about weight?

That said, OATMEAL. Not the instant stuff, but the rolled or steel-cut stuff that's less processed. It's got proteins and irons, plus it will help fill you up so you don't overeat.

I can't add much to weight discussion, but Poor Girl Eats Well (http://www.poorgirleatswell.com/) is an excellent site for cheap recipes and tips! I'm very fond of her budget split pea soup.

Re: Gaining weight, how?

When I was unemployed and depressed eating healthily was literally the only thing I did on a regular basis. I might not have dragged myself to the shower more than once a fortnight, but I sure could spend upwards of three hours in the kitchen every day. Find a handful of meals you can make that taste really nice and that collectively satisfy your basic nutritional needs, and then cycle through them regularly (and if you find you like cooking: experiment in between!). Make them in large portions and freeze the leftovers. Keep large quantities of the dried or tinned ingredients you use regularly in your cupboards and stock up on food that can be made really quickly or with a minimum of effort in case you're too depressed to cook (for me: eggs, pasta, soups, baked beans, potatoes, sausages). Try not to buy ready meals if you don't want to eat them :) Given practice and some good recipes, you might find that home cooked meals taste twice as nice as anything pre-prepared.

I don't really have any advice on how to gain weight, but a friend of mine had the same problem and in an attempt to get to a healthy weight, ended up with high cholesterol (and was still underweight). So I just wanna let you know that it's a thing that can happen, especially if you have crazy-fast metabolism, so make sure to keep an eye on those things, too!

Good luck, and I hope you can get what you need c:
