[Star Wars/Spaceballs]

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Spaceballs had a much wider appeal. And Bill Pullman was hot back then.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes he was! Thank you. I actually liked him well into his "Independence Day" days. Now, he's not ugly by any means, but I'm kinda "meh" about him. I guess it was the floppy hair.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Me too. I always felt really awkward as a kid when I found him hot as the dad in Casper. DILF, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I love Spaceballs, but, um, a geeky Mel Brooks parody movie had a "much wider appeal"? Than Star Wars???? Y'know, THAT Star Wars? The one everyone and their dog has seen and everyone who hasn't knows all about from osmosis?

I'm sorry but wut.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
I found Star Wars boring. Just because people have watched/heard of something, doesn't mean it appeals to them.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but it's not correct to say Spaceballs have much wider appeal, because they don't. A lot of people don't like Mel Brooks' humour.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
"A much wider appeal" does not mean "I found more appealing", it means "everyone generally found more appealing". Which is not true, obviously, with how popular Star Wars is even to this day.

Just because you liked something more than the other does not mean everyone did, or even most people did.

Well, I guess something to note about characters like Han and Leia is they might seem trite and overdone now, but back then they were pretty novel. Scoundrels weren't a big thing in the '70s, and daring, snarky princesses might seem like a pretty regular trope, but back then the demure, soft-spoken kind was entirely expected. That's what Leia's whole "Aren't you a little short for a Stormtrooper?" is supposed to mean--it's a big moment because up until then, you were expecting her to be fragile and helpless (as was Luke).

So it might be that the parody versions can be more enjoyable nowadays, since they seem less tired as ideas.

Scoundrels have always been a big thing in American cinema though.

[personal profile] sugar_spun 2013-03-12 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
But more in a swashbuckling kind of way--he rescues damsels and steals a kiss! Han Solo codified a more asshole kind of scoundrel. Prior to that, the only kind was more like Robin Hood.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd add most of the work Paul Newman and Robert Redford did in the 70s.

The homecoming between Sundance and Etta is still one of my favorite scoundrel scenes ever.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's less that it was unknown, and more that the concept of snarky, scoundrelish protagonists went into hibernation in big-budget Hollywood movies for a couple decades. I mean, you have plenty of characters like in classic Hollywood movies and film noir and screwball and all those sorts of things - it's only with the cowboy movies and the military movies and the big-budget blah stuff of the 60s, and then the grimness and seriousness of a lot of the 70s, that it doesn't exist so much.

So it's more of a renaissance than an innovation. And even then, you already had James Bond, who's as snarky and dickish as you like.

...And?

[personal profile] sugar_spun 2013-03-13 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
"So it might be that the parody versions can be more enjoyable nowadays, since they seem less tired as ideas."

I made it its own little paragraph.

Is F!S just extremely bad with reading comprehension?

Well, it proves that if Luke and Han morphed into one person, they'd be the perfect male I guess.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It's okay to like a parody (even an affectionate one) and not like the original. Lots of people do.

Also, I agree with you on that one. I hate Star Wars quite a lot, actually, and I adore Spaceballs. I also love Darths and Droids.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I also don't care much for Star Wars, but like Spaceballs and Darths and Droids. Though I sometimes have trouble understanding the latter since it's been so long since I've seen the Star Wars movies, and I don't really remember them... oh well.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Whereas I love Star Wars and I loooooove Mel Brooks but I can't. Stand. Spaceballs.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
gettin' in this line

It's just not a funny movie. I really don't understand it.

Why, Lone Starr's of course, as evidenced by that picture!

If your scifi fan friends would disown you for loving Spaceballs, you need better scifa fan friends, because Spaceballs is one of the greatest movies.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there's something wrong with you. And it's no small thing.
