I got some of that feeling from real life.

A pinup model I had a crush on really self-destructed a few years back. I guess she was not so much forced into a desperate situation as she ate too little food and too much drugs.

But in some porn I can see this real nasty power play, whether real or playing to a male dominance fantasy, that creeps me out.

Some porn is pretty benign I think.

That's not even touching the way women who work in porn are usually treated. They're abused and bullied and it's horrible. A large percent of them are addicted to some drug or another and porn directors/producers tend to abuse this to force the women to do shit they don't want to do. I'm sure there are women who don't get treated terribly, but it's not the norm.

I have a difficult time with mainstream straight porn, because even if every one of these actresses are 100% consenting to what's going on, what's going on usually does not involve verbal consent or anything resembling an equally beneficial experience. Women are basically thrown around and positioned like Real Dolls -- oh, the guy wants you on your knees in front of him? He just grabs you and shoves you down there. Oh, he wants you on your back? Without a word, he just flips you over.

This probably is some women's idea of a hot time, but I hate how it's presented as Just the Way It's Done. Like this is a totally normal way of treating your female partner -- just do whatever the fuck you want to her without communicating, asking her if she's okay with it, responding to any kind of verbal or body language she may be sending you, etc. It's just disturbing to me.

Never mind the preponderance of throat-fucking, choking, slapping, spitting (the worst)....ugh, why do I watch this stuff.

If it's not clear, what I object to is not that this exists or that some people enjoy sex like this -- I object to how this is presented as The Norm of How Sex Works. So it sends the message that this is how you treat women, and women generally love to be treated like this.

Oh man, Requiem For A Dream secret. I honestly never thought I'd see the day this movie was referenced on FS, and I've been on FS since 2005. I saw this when it first came out and bought it on DVD a few years later, and it's really one of these films that just gets under your skin in a weirdly inexplicable way.

I totally agree. This scene, and the way she reacts immediately after getting out of the weird arena thing they set up for her, is one of those scenes burned on my psyche. The times I've watched mainstream porn I've gotten a lot of the same disturbing vibes that this girl is doing it for money, and it gets my skin crawling even if I don't get the impression she needs the money for drugs.

I still feel weird and sick when I think about this film. It's really powerful, anyone who hasn't seen it needs to. Just don't expect to walk away feeling good, you'll have a cloud of disease surrounding you for days.

I think that not consuming a product, be it porn, sweat-shop-labor-created products, fur, food, etc. because you don't approve of how it's produced shouldn't be something you keep a secret. You've got a valid point, however much some people will scream "sex-negative" or "feminazi" at you.

I never wanted to watch porn, partially for this reason. I get my kicks from erotic fiction and artwork just fine, but actual porn is a huge turn-off for me. Haven't seen this movie though but I know the context.

That reminds me recently I watched Graphic Sexual Horror, a documentry on insex... kind of disturbing, kind of not. Wasn't sure what to think.

I've never seen RfaD but I've had problems watching mainstream straight porn since I was in high school and became more aware of the way women in vulnerable situations are used in the porn industry. I have nothing against porn itself, but the way the industry and the material tends to treat women is symptomatic of larger problems in society imo.

I've never had an inclination to watch porn; I'm more interested in written smut. But I can understand the reaction to and fallout from this scene. It distressed me in a way that few other scenes in the film can match (exception: the fridge hallucination. Holy fuck).
