I found it bizarre that they only served humans. Do the goblins or trolls or whatever have house elves too? It's so magically convenient.

The power structure hints that every sentient magical being is beneath humans...I'd imagine that the MBs are kind of like 'we don't enslave our own' or what not, but this whole situation is very unusual.

It's so magically convenient.

It's kind of disturbing to think about, but I've pretty much always imagined that House Elves were created by some enchantments in the ancient past, or were once free creatures but were then subdued. I can't think of another explanation that fits - there's surely been some kind of mindfuckery at the very least, for the Elves to have such clear master/servant ideas in their heads. Maybe there are potions involved...

I don't know - it just seems to me that the convenience for magical humans only is precisely the point.

Could be they used to serve some other entities, and humans have filled that niche. Maybe there were some manner of high elves who decided the world was going to pot and took off without their underlings, and the underlings latched onto the humans.

That's interesting, but it makes me wonder where the high elves would have gone, and then my mind just conjures up some aliens in the sky taking them away, which I can't really take seriously. =) Do you have any theories?

Under the Hill! Fairyland, briefly.

Fairyland?

Now that just makes me jealous of them. Though, I do like the idea of there being a Fairyland the wizarding world at large don't know anything about...

So were the house elves originally ... Silvan elves or something?

*has only shaky grasp of the organization of Tolkien's eldar societies*

If I really want to rationalise it and give JKR credit for intentionally making her world have questionable tones, I could definitely see it as some form of subjugation that happened so long ago that it's been normalised by the time Hermione and Dobby even try to go against that.

I suppose there is always the risk of looking too deeply into something, and ending up giving an author too much credit. In universe, this explanation works for me, especially as a lot of things that seem... odd to us Muggles have been normalised in wizarding culture. But I wouldn't insist that this was Rowling's intention, no. :)

no because they serve the wand and only wizards are allowed to have wands

wand = penis

it's all about the patriarchy

mission accomplished

Probably because they're based on brownies, and brownies were usually linked to specific households rather than people. Trolls don't have homes, and I have no idea where goblins live. Is there anything specifically saying they only serve people, or is it just assumed because humans only ever see humans with house elves?

I always saw brownies as tiny squatters tbh. Anywho, I'm going with assuming they only stick around human households because the series never bothered to have anything outside of Harry's perspective.

What does brownies mean in this context? Because I keep seeing dessert-children trying to open doors or go outside and being told by their dessert-parents that there's a bright light that will turn them into a chocolatey puddle.
cloud_riven: Cute cigarrette box and coffee cup, with smiley faces, holding hands! Adorable! (breakfast lunch dinner)

Pardon the wiki link, but they're part of folklore.

Oh man now I want some chocolate pudding and terrible microwave brownies, or maybe just a mug cake.

^ The thing cloud linked to is also the basis for the Girl Scout Brownie.

My troop did an adorable play about it :')

(Anonymous) 2013-03-14 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I would guess that goblins have other goblins as servants, and wizards can't have goblin servants because the goblins won't cooperate (see: Goblin Wars). I'm imagining any troll or giant arrangement was terminated after an unfortunate squishing incident.
