Right there with ya, OP.

As a veteran barista, nothing grates on me worse than a coffeeshop AU ruined because the author didn't take the two seconds it requires to learn how to make a latte. It's actually one of the easiest things in the world so there's no excuse to get it wrong.

How do you make a latte? And is there a reliable resource for learning how to make a drink that's readily available? (I don't fully trust everything I google.)

So do I OP, so do I!

I don't care about mistakes like that* in fanfiction though, but I completely understand why someone would.

I am pretty forgiving when it comes to fanfiction though, as long as your story is descent and capitalize names and so on, and the plot is interesting* I pretty much read the fic, even if I beta read it in my mind.

*I can barely make a normal cup of coffee so I don't catch the mistakes.

*I'm on chapter 70ish on this WIP fic, where the plot is great, the paragraphs of clothes/music and so on not so much.

I'm okayish with it; irl customers also make weird orders. my litmus test is cappuccinos, and asking if they want their cappuccino wet or dry. It's cool though. They just want a tasty drink, so they can ask for whatever and I'll roll with it.

Although I guess in fic I still kinda wo der what other easy details they don't double check

Understandable enough. I don't know anything about coffee, but if I did, the mistakes might annoy me, too, OP. There's something to be said for some amount of realism and research, especially of details that are central to the premise of the story and easy enough to find out.

What is a coffee shop fic?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-18 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Just what it sounds like.

What coffee shop fics are is AWESOME!

Seriously though, AU's where the all or some of the characters works in a coffee shop.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-19 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
It's an AU where the characters from your favorite fandom work in a cafe. It's a thing. No, I don't know why, either.

caramel macchiato, black

I'd like a caramel macchiato with a tablespoon of black food coloring, please.

Pssh. Everyone knows blue food coloring is where it's at.

Wow that looks tasty *drools*

I always order caramel macchiato before remembering that they are way too sweet and i actually prefer my coffee sugarless; but then I see one and mmm, caramel...

[personal profile] wldcatsprstr_14 2013-03-19 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, that's a latte macchiato. An actual macchiato is just espresso with a teeeeny bit of milk or foam topping it. Like, a tablespoon or so.

Isn't that from Starbucks's website?

I may have browsed their website like crazy for a fic that I've never finished where the characters ended up in a Starbucks. Their drink and pastry pictures are so pretty. And I don't even drink coffee.

Being italian, I most of the time laugh at any kind of "coffee" mentioned in this type of fic. lol. (I hope this doesn't sound too bad, I don't mean any kind of offense. I actually tried starbucks a couple of times and the drinks aren't that bad, but we have such a strong coffe-culture here I always hear nothing but complaints about coffee drinks outside Italy. I had a vacation in the USA last summer with my family and I thought my mom would try to drown herself in a cup of "espresso" -which is supposed to be really short, it never was- even though I told her to just give up and surrender on a fate of being caffeine-deprived until we got back home.)
(IDEK why I'm infodumping all over you. sorry.)

Come to Melbourne. We have the world's best non-Italian coffee. (We also have a very large number of Italians, which might have something to do with it.)

I hate coffee, so I know nothing about it, but if I was going to write something set in a coffee shop I'd take five minutes to Google, at least.

Are you me, OP?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-19 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
That's one of the few minor details that don't drive me crazy when reading fic, although I'm not a coffee person, so I don't know a thing about it.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-20 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
The very fact that this thread has so many comments with conflicting information proves that the details of how to make a coffee drink aren't so simple and easy.

OP seems to acknowledge that this is a trivial thing to make a fuss over (we all have our things), but LOL at the attitude in this thread that "duh, coffee orders are so easy" when the thread itself proves they're nitpicky as hell.

Lol fandom.

Well, if the writer is going to bother to point out how a drink is made, they should take the time to write it down correctly.

I'm a former barista, and draw a webcomic set in a coffee shop.

That's actually something I'm going to cover! Various differences in coffee drinks, as the 'new girl' gets trained.

I worked for Peets.
