Agree about all of this. Then again, the show glosses over a lot that it shouldn't. I'm hoping we'll get more since there will be double the eps in S3.

Agree with everything here. But TW deals with a lot of heavy topics and never really addresses any of them. And I don't think it's something they ever will address, just pile on more trauma for the sake of drama. It's frustrating.

It's amazing how much of a mess they have managed to write in only 24 episodes. So many things are just brushed aside and when they try to write something more complex (like with Deaton and his relationship with the Hale family), it's usually full of contradictions.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2013-03-21 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! When I first finished watching I went to fandom hoping that people would pick up the slack and have some interesting fic dealing with all the contradictions and complex relationships etc, but alas it's just mostly knotting and Sterek porn. :(

You're not looking in the right places, then.

I actually am going through the show right now and watching it with a friend. We'll pause it right in the middle to go, "That's a contradiction! How do we fix this?" Then we try to create headcanons that make sense.

It takes us a long ass time to get through each episode.

I like this scene too I actually wish they had gone somewhere with it though.

Then again, I wish they went deeper into a lot of things because I feel like there's a lot in all the character's backstories that could really be fleshed out. I can think of at least one for each character.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-21 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
That's pretty much the only time it isn't just shrugged off with a mention. Otherwise it's been "Remember how your family burned to death? Good times." or "Maybe whoever did it had good reasons for burning them all to death."

Maybe that's the reason Derek is so pissed off all the time. Everyone keeps thinking of it as a marshmallow roasting party.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-21 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the way people talk about the Hale fire is pretty engraging. People died in that fire. People were murdered in that fire. There was no good reason. Honestly, I'm surprised Derek hasn't snapped yet because of the way his trauma is treated.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-21 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
That could be the reason Peter snapped. Year after year sitting there unable to move, watching the wall and listening to the nurses and doctors talking about the fire. Would make anyone go nuts.

Yes to all of this. It annoys me something fierce that there's still so much in these characters' backstories that we don't know. I wish so hard that we'd get some flashbacks to the time before the fire and to Stiles' life with his mom. It's probably just wishful thinking though.

S3 SPOILERS

SPOILERS

(just in case you didn't want any spoilers for season 3)

There is a flashback episode in season 3. They've announced the casting for young-Derek, Laura, and Mama Hale. So there will be at least a bit of backstory for some of them!

I love Teen Wolf, but there's a lot they don't deal with very well...or at all. I know Jeff Davis said he doesn't want it to be an "issues" show, and that's fine, but damn, if you don't want it to be an issues show, then quit putting in the issues! If you don't want to deal with the repercussions of child abuse, then don't make one of your focus characters an abused child. If you don't want to deal with the repercussions of statutory rape, then don't have one of your main characters be raped by an adult when they're underaged. You can't give your characters tragic backgrounds and then not allow them to process that tragedy in any way. That's lazy writing. If you're going to throw major issues into your show, then you need to deal with them realistically, even within a show about werewolves.

I thought "issues" was referring to things like homophobia, race, and girl power, or whatever you can put in a Very Special Episode With A Very Special Lesson kind of thing.

+1

This.

NGL, I like the fact that it's not an "issues" show. To me, it's enough that they acknowledge that certain issues exist and try to make it the kind of universe where the population is progressive-- for the most part, anyway. Sometimes I just want to get away from all those RL issues. Hence, why I watch fantasy TV shows in the first place.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-22 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
my friends don't understand this. i will often put off a fic with warnings like 'large-scale homophobia' and 'character deaths' and so on because i just don't want to deal with that stuff. more often than not i read fic to get away from, like you said, real life issues. for a few minutes/hours i just want to immerse myself in something that won't make me angry or sad.

i flock to fantasy tv series & movies for this same reason. it's also why i tend to not get involved too heavily in the non-fic portion of fandom(s). too much talk and arguing about things i just don't want to deal with on my 'down time'.

I loved that scene too. I think the only time Chris seemed to acknowledge that the fire was not a good thing was when he was talking to Kate, and insisting that it was an accident. It was nice to see him finally put two and two together and actually look ashamed for it.

It's just too bad he can't actually put out an actual apology, and instead just use the fire for petty provocation :|

Seriously, show. I know you're fun to watch, but would it kill you to not just sweep everything that happens under a rug.

I think that's the thing that frustrates me most about this show. It was so potential but doesn't seem to do much with it.

Ah well, at least there's probably fic that goes over these things... somewhere.

If I wrote fic that went over those things, it would mostly involve characters constantly interrupting one another and going, "Hey, do you remember that time ________," and calling eachother out on the things they say and promise or said they promised to do (I'm thinking of Deaton especially. I think the writers are just making his thing up as they go along per episode.)

I agree with this secret. AND (although I love Peter) it's also weird that Peter killed Laura and Derek just hangs out with him at the end of season 2 like they're best buds and doesn't seem to mind. THAT HE MURDERED HIS SISTER.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-22 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Derek did get a few punches in and threw Peter though a wall when he came back, so I guess that's all that can be expected for now. And seeing how Deaton told him to trust Scott and not trust Peter, and how that turned out, he probably just went 'fuck it, I'll take my chances with him'.

That was a potent scene. I feel like they gloss over the death of Laura more than the Hale Fire. I mean she was the only one Derek had left for 6 years, they had to be close, but we never hear anything about her.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-22 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
I know, and ugh, is it frustrating.

There should have been way more focus on the fact that SHE was the one who was murdered. Her entire family is killed in a fire and then she's suddenly killed the moment she steps back intotown and NO ONE has anything to say about it?
