Has anyone played the new Walking Dead game that focuses on him? and if so, is it any good? I'm not sure if I want to buy it, since I don't usually like games that focus on characters already being explored by shows/movies... the other game was great because it was about a different group of people. I'm not sure I should shell out money for a game about Daryl, though, even though I do like him.

Also, I still like him. But I haven't seen the most recent five or six episodes, so I guess that could change. But I don't consider him a Mary Sue, because the plot doesn't revolve around him more than other characters, the other characters don't behave as though it does, they don't all fall over themselves to be nice to him... I really don't think that being skilled at hunting and fighting and other woodsman skills make him a Mary Sue. The rest of the team values him for his skills, and that has shaped his character development into someone who uses those skills for the good of the team.

Haven't played it but I heard that game is incredibly poor.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
bummer, I suspected as much but if it had turned out to be worth the money I would have bought it.

That game? I ain't touching it because I am judging how janky it looks from just the trailers.

There's a couple of people doing Let's Plays of it, I'd suggest you check those out.

sorry OP you can sit in your corner with like the 3 other people who feel this way. it's a lonely club. daryl is beloved and for good reason - he's awesome lol.

1) Oblig: "Mary Sue" does not mean "character I don't like."

2) Neither he nor Michonne are Mary Sues are being overtly glorified; they are both depicted as being far from perfect, both had to earn their place in the group, and both continue to have dubious morals. The only reason they seem badass is because they've developed the ruthless battle skills necessary for living in a zombie apocalypse, as one does, if one expects to live.

3) I don't agree he's been derailed so far, and interviews with Norman Reedus suggest he's trying really hard not to let that happen, but yeah, he probably will if the writers aren't careful.

This.

Re: 3 - derailed in what way?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
IMO both Michonne and Daryl stand out because out of everyone in the cast they seem less like "real people forced to live in the zombie apocalypse" and more like videogame characters. Daryl's a wisecracking badass with a bow and arrow, Michonne's the stoic badass wielding a samurai sword.

Daryl's preferable because Norman Reedus is a good actor and has some depth but compare his character in the first season to now.

Daryl 'wisecracking'? I must be watching some other show

I don't really see what could've sparked this feeling on OP's part. He hasn't played a major role in the last several episodes, and before then he's had an interesting character arc involving how he relates to and deals with his brother. He hasn't gone on sprees of implausible badassery or started taking over the show. Having a skill-set that makes you well-suited to a particular situation doesn't make you a Mary Sue.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
does anyone on the internet understand what a mary sue is anymore?

I'll give you a hint: it's neither of those two characters. I understand disliking them (I don't like them much either but I don't really like any of the characters any more tbh and I'm pretty much done with the show especially since I read some spoilers that really put me off) but they aren't mary sues.

Is there such thing as a Villain Sue?

Because if anyone's a sue, at least in regards to ridiculous superpowers, making everyone just love him, and omnipresent bs, it's the Governor :/

HOW did he get out of that warehouse full of walkers with nothing but his fists and an eyepatch? HOW!? If he doesn't succumb to a scratch or bite he got during that debacle, I'll be forever disappointed.

(And then what, he *teleported* to the prison just in time to grab Andrea? WTF?)

Perhaps, but he's just so yummy.

He and Glenn could be magical Mary Sue jedi and I wouldn't care as long as they kept being hot D:

Me too, OP. I kinda miss S1 Daryl's ragefulness, honestly. I'd trade half his random "badass" moments these days for things more like that scene at the CDC when he's practically scaling the walls in desperation, trying to get out of there while everyone else is reasoning with Jenner.
