Two words: Gregory Maguire.

And his fic isn't even good, IDK how he ended up as a BNF with a freaking musical based on his shitty fanfiction.

I'm thinking in terms of professional writers who also write/have written fanfiction. In which case: Ursula Vernon. She's never fessed up to which fandom she wrote for because she doesn't want a) a mass of people flocking to her fic just because she wrote it and b)any professional problems, but she did admit to writing and posting fic on ff.n awhile back.

Not just her, I can think of three others right off the top of my head: Naomi Novik, Cassie Clare, and Rob Thurman.

I think it happens way more often than people think.

You're forgetting EL James, but that's okay. I'd like to forget her, too.

Cassandra Claire is one of those people who's more of a ficcer made good than a pro-writer who also writes fic, IMHO. And published work aside, she still leaves a bad taste in my mouth from all the crap antics way back when.

Well, yeah, me too, I wouldn't touch her with a barge pole, myself. But I see her books on the shelf, so there she is. Rob Thurman and Naomi Novik might also be "fanficcers who made good," but the fact is that fanfiction writing can and does turn into professional writing, and it's not particularly rare.

Didn't Mercedes Lackey used to write fanfic?

Dunno about other authors, but that's more because I rarely look up authors outside of what books they wrote

(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think she ever wrote - I know she tries to rein it in and manage it because, iirc, she had to scrap a book because someone wrote fic too close to her plot and it would have opened her up to a lawsuit. Over her own work.

Another author, though - Lois McMasters Bujold started in fic.

I'm pretty sure the lawsuit thing happened to Marion Zimmer Bradley, and Lackey was just involved because of how closely she was working with MZB at the time.

She admitted to writing fic about her MMORPG characters on Making Light once, but I don't think she was posting it anywhere publicly. She at least had friends who write fic, if nothing else.

Diane Duane just posted on her tumblr asking for help navigating the AO3...

(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Diane Duane has a tumblr?! Would you mind linking me?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
dduane.tumblr.com (she's not trying very hard to hide it.)

Lois McMaster Bujold was a fanfic writer.
She is also an extremely awesome and amazing author. OPs argument is invalid.

(okay, it was before, too, but yeah)

I'm reading "Captain Vorpatril's Alliance" right now and it is so good.
