Oh gods.

Fanartists sometimes spend hours working and drawing art, and if they're popular, as said before, people will take their work and claim it as their own sometimes. Copying might be the highest form of flattery, but that doesn't mean people like it. It's still their fucking work. Taking it and claiming it as your own/not giving credit is still art theft. If someone took an essay (let's say it was for fandom's sake since fanart apparently means you're just a fucking means) some other person wrote and claimed it as their own, isn't that plagarism? If it was your essay, which you poured time and effort into, and someone comes along, steals all the work you did by claiming it as their own, wouldn't you feel wronged? Some people would actually fucking like for their work to be credited. Do you know why Japanese artists get pissed off when people post fanart without a link back? They'd like for the people to know that it was THEM. It doesn't matter if the person posting doesn't claim it as their's. It matters that it's not being credited. It's not a fucking cardinal sin, but sometimes it's just plain rude. Doesn't mean EVERYONE is like that, some people do take courtesy into consideration and say that they forgot the original artist and would like to know who it was so that they can credit. At least they're showing concern so that they can be open to the idea, not just forgetting it.

If you feel like using a fanart, asking is common courtesy, don't you think?

Watermarks don't stop theft, but it can be a blaring sign sometimes that it was stolen. Huge watermarks aren't in 72pt font Arial stamped across the entire fanart; they're usually in low opacity, and if they're big, the artist at least has a reason for it.

What's so wrong with wanting credit? I can say otherwise to popularity, but if someone spends time to draw something, what's so bad about wanting people to know that you're the one who drew it? Shouldn't you at least have a claim on the fanart you did? Stop the stupid mass of people who think stealing artwork is funny as shit?

You say you're a fanartist, you should know.

So fuck off.

In before the loling mass and serious business.

You say you're a fanartist, you should know.

The OP may be a fan artist, but s/he doesn't necessarily have the skills to produce art worth stealing... Just saying.

I agree with about 3/4ths of the secrets in this post... but you know what? #1, you're the only one relevant enough to mention. Your secret couldn't have picked a better post to have been on.

Mmm-mmm, fandom wank.

[identity profile] valkyriur.livejournal.com 2007-09-11 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
#15, Voltron, Defender of the Universe! HURRAY!!!

#22, I'm seconding you when you say some of them are probably only [orientation] in fandom, but not in real life.

#28, I've never seen somebody mash two houses together, but if they did I'd point and laugh because you can't be in two houses.

*Raises a hand.* Bad pairing, bad. I don't understand who came up with that idea. Or Sesshomaru/InuYasha, or Ed/Envy

[identity profile] klytaemnestra.livejournal.com 2007-09-11 03:59 am (UTC)(link)

1. Yeah, at least there's fanworks out there. I've been involved in at least two very large fandoms and I've always enjoyed them for the most part.

10. I've written slashfic about Friedrich the Great and would love to write a fictionalized novel about his younger years. I have no regrets either.

18. I `ship three pairings and one of them is more or less canon, but really I don't get `shippy about Bleach either.

22. I'm wary of even touching this one, but I can kind of see where you're coming from, but at the same time disagree. I've seen far too many people fall in love with their RP partners because their characters had something special and I've also seen far too many people hurt because of it. I identify myself as straight because while there are some girls I would go lesbian for and well ... have, I don't automatically see a girl and think, 'Hey, I want to do them!' But overall, this secret is kind of wanky beyond words ... yeah.

29. As a fanartist, I can't stand it either. If I'm posting my artwork to a website that's not my own page I'll put a little signature with my web address and email, but huge watermarks really do take away from the art. I've had art stolen and while it's not fun to deal with, I don't want to ruin it for everyone else by plastering huge ass watermarks all over the art itself.

"I've written slashfic about Friedrich the Great and would love to write a fictionalized novel about his younger years."

OH GOD, LINK PLZ. Also, if you do ever write that novel, you have one very eager buyer right here.

1. i love how creative you were with the font and stuff. (it's too late for me to be very intelligible but DO WANT.)

29. which cursive font is that? it's gorgeous.

20. Oh god, I'm not the only one who gets embarrassed looking at pictures of the characters I like?! I'M NOT ALOOOOONNNEEEEE?! ♥

Hey, I was just listening to them!
And yes, their relationship is adorable. And sometimes I do feel like shipping them... even if I hate RPS

Aww, you deleted it?! I would have loved to see how that pairing would have worked. I've entertained myself with the idea of those two together but couldn't think of how they would end up together.

4.
Motherfucking signed.

22.
Full of fail because I came out as a lesbian about 20 years ago before I even knew what fandom was. The odds that I'm the only person in the world who decided they were queer without it relating to fandom at all are pretty damned low.

It is so much fun to play in that comm. I'm not there often (which I need to change) but I know the CFUDers love seeing new posts and secrets.

9. I think there've been obscurer. At least those two showed a level of concern for each other at some point(s).

25. You know who was really ruined? Satoshi. I first saw the dub with my anime club, and by the end of the first episode nobody could stop laughing whenever he opened his mouth. It was like the voice actor deliberately put really bad subtext (though it was just text, the way he did it) between Satoshi and Dark/Daisuke in his mouth.

[identity profile] mcjunyi.livejournal.com 2007-09-11 08:54 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god, I love playing around in ic_secrets. I've brought out characters of mine from a dead RP comm just because it's hilarious to have them interact with the CFUD people who know who they are. (Even if it means I have to playercest since I kind of play one person in CFUD, and his WIFE in that other RP)

But I totally adore playing with people from other communities. ILU GUYZ ♥

Speaking as the OP for the Mario+Samus friendship 'secret' the other day -yes, that was me- I often wonder why people don't like friendship!ship stuff much anymore, if at all.

I mean hell, I get weird looks from people -especially at NSider- for saying that I like Mario... just imagine trying to explain that you ship Mario and Samus (from 'Metroid') as friends to people who have the brain capacity the size of a pea. (I'm not kidding either, I've pulled my hair out so many times over it)

Now while I can't say I'm a Daft Punk fan -or a fan of fanning over real life people in general, save for one exception, but he's a friend of mine as well-, I do agree with you overall. So take heart in that someone else feels the same way, albeit on a slightly different level.

I've known I'm gay for about a year now. My girlfriend and I have been dating for five months. Those seven girlfriend-less months? I was still a lesbian. I knew I was, despite not having ever kissed a girl or anything like that. I just am. And now? Girlfriend! Lo and behold!

In conclusion:

WHAT NOW, BITCH?

I have nfi if anyone else responded to this because I'm too lazy to look through six pages of threaded comments, but!

Just about every Sakuhai fan I know (and I mean real Sakuhai fans, not the ones that ship hydexeveryone anyway) seems to believe it. I personally will not claim it to be fact... but damn, I LIKE to believe it. And when you present all the evidence that still goes on to this day (see: Lion Heads performing I'm so happy, their song Haufur, DANGER EVENTS WTF), I think it's hard not to believe that there were feelings there.

Also, taking into consideration the entire Heart album (and True, I know, but especially Heart)... damn.

Whether or not it was consummated, I'm a believer in that they cared for each other, too. And you know, if you take it to the Sakuhai fandom, no one would really be inclined to disagree with you there from what I've seen/experienced.

1. I'm with you in that one, but it's just that sometimes, in bigger fandoms, we see the same things over and over again. Even bashing the badfics and Mary Sues can stop being entrertaining when they start looking exactely the same... (Then, there are the complaints about lack of originality, but...) Yeah, but I miss some of the fun that are ashipwars and fangirls and their sues and slash haters and all we get to see at the most known fandoms... Even though I don't like the majority of it (Harry Potter, Naruto, Bleach...), I'm on it just to see the wank. Seriously, nothing is as fun as the fights.

19. ZOMG!!! I LOVE THIS SERIES!! So much more than the original one. The artwork is BEAUTIFUl, BEAUTIFUL. I have the first four volumes in german, and I'm aching to get the rest, even though I don't know in which volume it's. Hey hey, secret poster (or anyone, actually), do you know where I can get those raws and translations you said?
