Weird comment at work...am I overreacting?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-26 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I'm an office manager/assistant at a doctor's office. The doctor sees the patients, obviously, but I pretty much run everything else, and assist with patients from time to time. I like what I do, and I know I'm good at it.

This afternoon I was talking to one of the patients, and she asked me if I wanted to become a doctor myself (which I found a little weird since I don't imagine most administrative people in medical offices plan on becoming doctors) and I said no, I stuck to the administrative stuff.

Which led her to make the comment, "So when are you going to get a REAL job?"

I really didn't know what the hell to say to that, and right then the doctor needed my help with another patient so I was able to get out of it.

It pissed me off (and it still pisses me off thinking about it now) but I'm not sure if I'm being overly sensitive or what. I mentioned it to the next patient because she's a family friend and I've known her several years (I wouldn't have told her otherwise) and I was curious what she thought, but she didn't seem to think it was a big deal and said "oh, I'm sure she didn't mean anything bad by it" but I'm finding it difficult to come up with an interpretation of that comment that isn't negative.

What do you guys think?

No, that's pretty insulting and completely rude of her to say.

No, I'd find that offensive too. But for what you've said, the lady you were talking to might not realize that administrative work at doctor's office does not lead to being a doctor. And has probably never done that type of work herself.

SA

I would say, though, you should probably just brush it off. No use stressing over something you can't change.

Whether she was condescending or well meaning, either way it was rude.

How could that sort of comment be well meaning? It sounds pretty unambiguously rude to me.

They could have intended it in a 'you're better then this move up in the world' sorta way.

Re: Weird comment at work...am I overreacting?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-26 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
That's still an incredibly rude thing to say imo.

Re: Weird comment at work...am I overreacting?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-26 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Still, that's implying that there's something wrong with it and if OP enjoys their work I don't see the point in saying something like that other than being an asshole.

Re: Weird comment at work...am I overreacting?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-26 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
The fact that you think it might have been meant in a non-rude way means there is pretty much no chance it wouldn't have come off as rude.

I guess as a recent grad, I can see that sort of comment (though hers was terribly executed if this was her intent) as inquiring about a person's future and prospects. That said, I doubt this instance was well meaning.

Is this the kind of job that's considered a temporary type of thing like, for example, retail though? Where I'm from administrative jobs are considered 'respectable' long-term/permanent positions rather than a 'only doing this until I can find something better' like retail (not that I personally think there's anything wrong with retail, just that it's something a lot of people look down on).

[personal profile] inkdust 2013-03-26 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Shrug. I think to some people it might be. Not as ubiquitously as retail, but depending on a person's background, they might not consider it a long-term plan. Speaking very personally, I would be surprised if anyone I knew from high school or college chose an administrative job with the intention of permanence. But that comes from the specific cultures of my schools, and the general idea of a permanent administrative job is perfectly respectable to me. It might not be so to this woman (and seems not to be).

I don't see how that could be taken as anything other than a huge insult. What a jerk.

You're not overreacting at all, that was pretty rude; asking "oh what are your future plans!" is reasonable, but "when are you going to get a real job?" isn't.

I think, "Fuck her." Because that is some condescending utter and total bullshit. I would be so pissed if someone said that to me.

But I might be a bit too close to this kind of situation? See, my mom is a nurse and loves being a nurse. She doesn't ever want to be a doctor. But you wouldn't believe the amount of people who dismiss her because she's not a doctor, tell her she's wasting her time as a nurse, or imply she's lazy for not becoming a doctor. She's used to it now so it just flies over her but it drives me up the wall.

So, yeah, hearing this kind of thing activates my "Stop disrespecting my mama!" reaction.

Yes, that was incredibly rude and very uncalled for. Try to forget about it. :(

Sorry that happened to you.

If it makes you feel any better, I work in a library aka - run your home business off our free wifi central. Most days we're open until 9 in the evening, but weekends we close early at 5.

And, one such early weekend at closing, when we finally had to go shoo a lady, and all of her stuff, out of one of our meeting rooms because she refused to leave on her own. Our notice that the library was closed was met with a 'Well some of us have real jobs that can't be limited to your 9-5 hours!'.

...We told her she was welcome to run her real business from her car in the parking lot if she still needed wifi. XD

So, yes, the real job comment was rude. But take it with a grain of salt 'cause chances are she just wanted to make her job feel more 'real' by insulting yours.

'Well some of us have real jobs that can't be limited to your 9-5 hours!'.

Haha, what. Okay, so what with things being they way they are, a lot of people don't get to work 9-5 anymore ever (or 8-5, as has always been my experience in offices), but still, does she think that the other, I dunno, 80% of the work force does work real jobs? That people back in the '60s (or whenever 9-5 was last A Thing) all not have 'real jobs'?

I'd say I hoped it occurred to her how dumb that comment was, but I'm sure it won't, just as she won't realize how rude it was.

No, that's rude as hell. I hate that destinction: a REAL job. When I worked in retail, I got asked that a lot. It's like, fuck you, I'm getting paid to do this, this is a real job. It' might be shitty, but it's real. :|

This. I seem to be pretty good at retail jobs, since that's what I used to have, and that's the job I have now. Honestly, I am quite content to stay at my current job if it pans out in my favor because fuck job hunting, man. I show up and do shit, and I get paid for it. Screw you if you think an hourly wage job isn't a "real" job - at least I have a job. Sheesh.

That would piss me off; completely inappropriate thing to say. You are doing a real job. Sheesh. That being said, let it roll right on off as there's nothing constructive you can do about it. *hugs*

It sounds like she's kind of naive. She may not have a lot of work experience herself. I'm always running into people who think everyone aspires to be the boss or go start their own company and can't fathom how anyone could ever be remotely happy in any kind of a subordinate position, never mind that being the boss is often not a lot of fun.
