Look, I have no idea what the content of the books is, but don't judge them by the cover art.

I tell this joke every time someone brings up cover art, but here it is again:
Q: How many cover artists does it take to change a lightbulb?
A: Why is there... and eggbeater, I think... sticking out of this light fixture?

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2013-04-01 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know the first thing about those books, but dear God is that some horrible cover "art"! The bottom one in particular, ugh...

(Anonymous) 2013-04-01 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously, how are people not aware by this point that authors almost never have any control over their cover art?

The fact that the publisher thought an extremely skinny woman on the cover would sell better than a plus-sized one has no relevance to the content created by the author. The one thing has no bearing on the other.

We had a secret about that very point not that long ago. (Can't remember the series - pretty sure it wasn't this one, since the cover was in a completely different style and format - but it was about a plus-sized character, who the cover artist insisted on drawing skinny.)

... Did you read a different secret from me? or are you just intimately familiar with this book series and making a comment on the fandom in general.

Authors get almost no say in the cover art and frequently cover artists don't even read the books before they design the covers (not out of spite or anything, but because you're assigned six books and given two weeks to have the covers in--there's no time to read them all). The author has stated multiple times that she's unhappy with how skinny the cover models are on the books in the Soulless series. Ever heard of the phrase "don't judge a book by its cover?"

Singalong time?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-01 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know squat about the actual content of these books, but covers not representing their contents is kind of a well-known phenomenon. There are even filks about it.

To the tune of She'll Be Coming Round the Mountain When She Comes:

There's a bimbo on the cover of the book.
There's a bimbo on the cover of the book.
She is blonde and she is sexy;
She is nowhere in the text. She
is a bimbo on the cover of the book.

There's a dragon on the cover of the book.
There's a dragon on the cover of the book.
He is long and green and scaly,
but hes nowhere in the tale. He
is a dragon on the cover of the book.

There's a rocket on the cover of the book.
There's a rocket on the cover of the book.
Its a phallic and a stout one,
but my novel was without one.
There¹s a rocket on the cover of my book.

There's a castle on the cover of the book.
There's a castle on the cover of the book.
Every knight is fit for battle,
but the action's in Seattle.
There's a castle on the cover of the book.

Wow, this was very first filk I ever learned. I knew a lot of Baen and Ace authors in the '80s-'90s, and it was very very apt.

That was beautiful! The first verse reminds me of the new Anne of Green Gables cover with a blonde woman on it. Very apt.

The artist doesn't usually get a say about the cover art. That's usually the publisher.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-01 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
But the author doesn't get to pick the covers? And she's stated in the text to be at least chubby.

Has anyone pointed out yet (correctly) that the publisher picks the cover art, without any input from the author?

Also, in the US anything over a 14 is 'plus size'...which would take in a lot more people than you might otherwise think.

Oh, I JUST came back this weekend from a con where that author was a guest! I bought the book in pink there as a gift for my brother and sister-in-law based off of the author seeming cool and the premise sounding interesting. Hopefully that doesn't bite me in the ass later.

...I don't have anything to add to the secret itself.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-02 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Authors have little to no control over cover art, generally speaking.

I've never read these books, so I can only comment on the cover art.

To amplify the above - not only is the cover design out of the author's hands, it's rarely done by anyone who's actually read the book.

If the author's lucky, the cover artist will be given a rough outline, and will correctly guess how a lot of things should look, or the outline will cover enough significant details that they won't have to guess. If they're really lucky, an actual event from the book will be portrayed without too many wrong details.

If the author's mildly unlucky, the cover artist will be given a rough outline, and will add inappropriate details, or completely skip over something they (or whoever wrote the outline) didn't understand to be significant.

If the author's rather unlucky, they won't be given an outline and will just draw something vaguely appropriate to the genre, maybe inspired by the title. (I think this may be the most common.)

If the author's completely unlucky, the publisher will just grab something from their files and stick it on.

Sookie Stackhouse novels, anyone?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-02 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
You'd never know that Sookie is a size 10 from the TV show or the book covers.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-04 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't read this author's newer books, but Alexia from the Parasol Protectorate series is definitely a plus-sized girl, and it's never treated like some horrible thing that has to change. It's also referenced at least once a book in some way or another, so it's definitely not some throwaway characteristic hidden somewhere.
