IA. Even the changes don't compel me to watch.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-03 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
This is why I don't get when people bitch that things aren't straight word for word adaptations of a book. If I've read the book and a tv/movie is exactly like it, I get BORED.

The Walking Dead is a good example of changes can be good, I wouldn't say every change is great (Andrea's character for example) but without the changes it'd be really hard to find the series exciting, part of the excitement is not knowing who will die or at least when they'll die.

There are some changes to it, enough to keep it interesting. Plus, the fun of GRRM is in the characters and dialogues and much as the mystery and 'guess what happens (and who dies) next.' The actors are great and it's fun to watch their interpretation of the source material. But then again, I'm a Shakespeare fan who regularly goes to watch the plays, so obviously I don't mind seeing an adaptation of something I like, so long as it's good enough.

I have a hard time watching it because of all of the things they changed.

It's okay to stray from the books on occasion, but I feel that the TV show does so far more often than it needs to--and it not only makes things different, but worse.

Yeah there are a couple of good changes, but there are a lot more "wtf were you thinking?" changes.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-04 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Though they did make the best choice ever in ageing up most of the characters. I can't even begin to imagine the show with a 13 year old Dany holy fuck.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-04 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Dany I agree with. But none of the other characters needed to be aged up, and I think they worked much better as children.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-04 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
This. I wasn't bored by the show because I knew what was going to happen. I was infuriated by it because of the changes that make it different and /worse/ than than books.

In retrospect, it was actually MUCH better when it stuck very closely to the books. I didn't mind some of the changes at first and some did work well but by the end of S2, I was sick and tired of the bad decision making in terms of changes. 80% of them were much worse.

And in honesty I didn't even really like the books /that/ much. I thought I would love the changes.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-04 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
This is why I'm never reading the books before watching the show. I love the show too much to ruin it like that.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-04 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
This is why I don't want to read the books past where the series is. I can't watch a series or a movie if I already know everything that's going to happen, I just get bored and irritated.
Oddly though I have no problem doing the opposite, so reading the books after watching the series is fine.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-04 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
That's what I'm doing.
sootyowl: (Default)

[personal profile] sootyowl 2013-04-04 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
That's why I'm not reading the books. I might read them after the show is done, but for now I like living in the dark.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-04 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I end up skipping through a lot of the scenes in the TV show because they're either boring me or I don't care about the characters there (lookin' at you, Snow... and just about everyone but Tyrion and Dany, come to think of it) so I'm probably going to end up reading the books so I have a more complete idea of what's going on.

I'm weird, I'll put up with a lot of things in books that I don't care about in TV shows or movies.

It also bothers me a lot that I notice just how much spouting of exposition they do in like, whorehouses or someone's tent on the battlefield, rather than actually doing something. I don't know if I never noticed before, or if it's just more prominent in this show, there's just a lot of standing around talking about doing stuff rather than actually doing it. I might put up with it better when I'm not listening to prostitutes moaning and giggling in the background...

I'll go out on a limb and say that it's probably not that you haven't noticed it before and probably more that TV has fewer options for exposition. In a book, a writer can show you the world in the bits between thought and dialogue; a TV or movie director doesn't have quite the same leeway.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-04 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
It just feels like we go from more "Talking about what we're going to do in the whorehouse" and then skip to "Talking about what we're going to do in the battlefield" and then they go back and it's "Talking about what we did offscreen in the whorehouse" and I just want to like... see that? It feels like this is so much more of a "tell, don't show" show, rather than vice-versa.

I've read most of the books several times, but I still love the TV show. Partially because they have to change things for a TV adaptation, partially because I know what's coming and I'm super excited for it. (Although I couldn't get into more than a few issues of the comic, but I think that was because the comic was pretty much just the book, and didn't bring anything new to the table. :/)

I'm the opposite in that I watched the show first and then tried to read the first book, but gave up because it was boring since I knew what was going to happen and it was all still fresh in my mind.
cadremage: (Default)

[personal profile] cadremage 2013-04-04 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Man, I've only read the first book and I feel you. Could only get through three episodes of the series.

I've read the books and enjoy the show. The only thing that really bugs me is the gratuitous nudity.

I'm the same way! I watched the first season and liked it well enough, but I have no motivation to watch more of it.
rbhudson: (Default)

[personal profile] rbhudson 2013-04-04 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. Too many changes, too, but honestly, I don't need to see it.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-04 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
This is smart idea regardles of your reasons why. If you love the books, boredome or not you may end up disliking the show because of the changes.

I wish someone had warned me not to watch and I had listened. The experience was grating but I had to know. I'm not watching it any longer however. I've had my fill of bad TV.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-04 08:43 am (UTC)(link)
And this is a secret because? It's OK not to watch a show, OP, even Game of Thrones.
