Have you ever watched an episode partway through and never finished it?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-05 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mean just while flipping through the channels checking out random shit or something, I mean sitting down to watch an episode of a show you're a fan of, and getting bored/irritated/ragey/uncomfortable/whatever and never bothering to go back and finish it.

I'm like 3/4 of the way through an episode of Once Upon a Time right now.. I just don't have any interest in what's going to happen, or in the 8 or however many episodes after it in season 2 that I haven't seen yet...

also I watched the first half hour of Walking Dead and never went back, but I wasn't actually a fan of it so that doesn't count.

I think the...second part of the 9th/10th/11th episode of Panty and Stocking. The one where Chuck just goes through a bunch of shit in b&w. I just shut it off, hope I didn't miss anything, and went to the next episode.

Not an episode, but I stopped watching Kings with the final episode to go. I don't even remember why.

Can we name episodes we never bothered to finish for a long time, but eventually did?

I remember that I skipped the Doctor Who episode "A Town Called Mercy" because the Doctor and Rory both started strongly irritating me within the first two minutes and I didn't have any desire to feel that, so I went straight past it to "The Power of Three", which was everything-is-wonderful-and-nothing-hurts. After several months, I eventually went back to watch Mercy, and I liked it and it was a shame I skipped it because it explained some things that bugged the hell out of me in the first two episodes of the season.

The Bones episode told entirely from the point of view of the victim's skull. Not only was it gimmicky and schmaltzy, but the number of stupid things they did just so that the skull would be able to see certain scenes (why are they bringing a skull home?) just killed my ability to sit through it.

Oh good grief that episode was stupid, I think that is one the last episode of Bones I've watched actually. I will get to the rest of the season at one point! Though the show kinda died for me the second Brennan had a child with Booth...

Yes. I've done it several times. Most recently was with an episode of Once Upon a Time. I'd been not liking the show as much this season, but I was still watching, until this one scene in an episode. I paused it, went to do other things, and even a week later I couldn't bring myself to watch it. So I deleted it and got rid of the auto record on my Tivo.

All the fucking time. I don't even care. I skip episodes all the time, just because I'm not feeling it. Especially if a show isn't serialized (or if the episode in question isn't part of a serial arc). I have no fear about this. I don't even have a specific example because I do it all the time. I think it did for the majority of episodes in Supernatural season 3. I don't even give a shit.

Who are all you people who force yourself to sit through episodes of television you're not even enjoying?

...because a lot of people like to know all the things that happen in shows they're a fan of? Because people can't magically tell if the episode is complete crap from beginning to end or if it's just partly crap but has good parts until they actually finish it in the first place? It's not like you can tell if an episode will be completely devoid of any worthwhile scenes until you, y'know, finish it.

Re: Have you ever watched an episode partway through and never finished it?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-05 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, that's fair enough. It's true that my method of watching TV often involves using the Internet, either to spoil things that I don't really care about / want to skip so I know what's going on in the story, or to at least figure out episodes that are considered universally bad that I don't want to watch. And I accept that not everyone is willing to do that.

Re: Have you ever watched an episode partway through and never finished it?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-05 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, sometimes you don't know it is crap until you have watched the whole thing. In fact, most of my most hated eps are never entirely crap. Generally I was enjoying them to a certain point in the ep (or at the very least if things weren't to my liking I could still see a way for it to become interesting) until they lost all the potential they were building up with some stupid plot twist or unnecessary event or whatever.

Well, that and some people just wanna riff on whatever it is they are watching. Or just... know how bad it is. Like watching a trainwreck. You just can't look away from the unfolding horror.

Re: Have you ever watched an episode partway through and never finished it?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-05 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, sure, you can't avoid everything bad, but if you're in a situation where you know you're not enjoying an episode... why bother? I mean, I think that's different from a good episode that loses it at the end. And I think hatewatching is a different phenomenon entirely.

SA

Personally, I keep watching (unless it is really really bad) cause I have seen so many TV shows with bad eps before that either ended up being important to the overall plot and plodding through the ep once is preferable to spending a bunch of time completely confused next ep wtf is happening or the ep is bad, but it has one glorious scene not necessarily related to the plot of the ep itself that somewhat redeems it for me. And well, no way to know what scenes are gonna work for you until you see it. I don't trust overall fandom opinion seeing as I've seen people go crazy for scenes I thought were dull and completely ignore scenes I thought were amazing.

I do this all the time. Most notably with House, Supernatural, Falling Skies, and the second season of The Walking Dead. If I find myself doing it too much I just quit the series.

Yes. To many many shows/episodes. I am not at all a completionist so this doesn't bother me one bit.

Yeah. It happened with Farscape. That was when I realized I couldn't finish watching the series. I just couldn't. So I didn't.

Yes, but it doesn't happen often. I like to know what's going on in the show in case it's later addressed, so I've sat through some shit episodes.

Usually when I can't finish an episode (or don't even want to start it) I put it off until I'm behind on the show and sometimes (if I've given up caring) I just quit. (Like White Collar. Maybe I'll decide to catch up one day...but I doubt it.)

Smallville, back in either season 7 or 8 when Lana came back for the last time. Clark & Lana's romance had already been put to rest and her coming back served no purpose except to make me cringe and wish she hadn't. It was so uncomfortable and horrible to watch.

That almost happened to me with Doctor Who. The two-parter that opens season 6 was irritating the shit out of me, can't quite remember why, and I abandoned it for weeks. Eventually went back and finished it though.

Yes. There was an episode in the first season of mlp [...I think] where Applejack kept using "y'all" to replace *every* form of "you" and that is like...one of my biggest pet peeves. So I turned it off and haven't bothered trying since.

Not television, but the number of times I've picked up Steel Ball Run, flipped through a handful more pages, then remembered its disconnection from the rest of Jojo and put it down...it's a large number. (Weirdly, I got through the parts of Jojolion that exist much easier. What even, self?)

Yes, but if it's something I'm a fan of, this usually marks me quitting the show entirely. Although there are some shows where I pick and choose certain episodes to watch anyway, like the X-Files, so with that I might do this without quitting it.
