oh, man, yeah. for me, smut writing is a careful, focus-driven activity, different than other kinds of writing and simultaneously engaging and boring in the special way only writing action scenes are.

only, most action scenes don't have to go on for pages.

--- self published smut authoress, because hey, we all need to pay the bills

Hey, I have a serious question: how do you get into this? And how do you make money self-publishing?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Self-promotion and networking. Serious fucking self-promotion and networking. Basically, you need to have exactly zero shame.

I have zero shame! As long as it's not my real name on it.

Hmm. This might be a good way to make a little fun money.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
lol self-publishing doesn't make you professional writing. in fact it's the exact opposite :P come back when you write well enough to be actually published

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Tell that to Michael Sullivan.

Anyway, it doesn't actually matter. If you're making decent money off of it, then the only people who can tell the difference are the people with ego problems.

SA

Oh! And I would hasten to add: being "actually published" doesn't have anything to do with writing "well enough," which you would know if you truly had any knowledge of the industry. It involves knowing the right people and getting them to shill for you. You can write like absolute crap and still land a contract if you grease the right palms.

The reason people self-publish isn't because they aren't good enough. It's because the publishing industry revolves around personal favors and nepotism.

You sound really determined to tell OP that they suck.

Are you butthurt that someone wouldn't buy your own work, or something?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
I think you misread. This person seems to be on OP's side.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 11:35 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

I'm...actually defending the fact that they self-publish and rejecting the idea that to be a "real writer" you have to get picked up by a publishing house.

I'm really sorry. I must have misread it.

:x

It's a way to get your work out there and get some practice. You have to practice your craft anyway, why not make a few bucks off it? Artists who do commissions for years before getting their foot in the door of a cartoon studio or comic book company are still considered "real" artists.

And a lot of UTTER SHIT is "actually published". Just look at any bookstore.

Is cheap ebook erotica great literature? Of course not. But you still have to write it. And if people are paying you for it, yeah, you have the right to call yourself a pro.

I don't see how someone self-publishing would be shameful unless they start putting on airs.

lol at the idea that it's somehow prestigious to be """actually published"""

That ain't hard either, kid, you just gotta write the dreck that has a market nowadays.

Saying this as someone who has, in fact, been published, before you get all whiny.
