I too hate it when people get the characterizations of anthropomorphized yaoi characters based on actual nations involved in a horrific world war incorrect. You have to do justice to your material, dammit.

I don't know Hetalia (I assume this is Hetalia?), so that might make sense? But Prussia was only a region by the time of the world wars as such, not a nation, and Spain was neutral in WWI and not a full participant in WWII, so I'm not sure identifying them by involvement in a world war is very accurate.

I... no, actually I'm not going to ask where the hell "Bad Touch Trio" came from. I don't want to know. I'm sure someone will explain, and then I'll read the explanation even after deciding I don't want to know, and then I'll be sorry.

My commment wasn't 100% accurate terminology-wise but that isn't really the point.

Yeah. The Spanish Civil War was almost a prequel for the world war in Europe; Nazi Germany used it as a testing ground for new air-to-ground tactics to horrific results.

So Spain wasn't terribly involved in WWII partly because it was terribly involved in a horrific conflict the decade prior.

Ah. I knew it stayed out of it because it had its very own fascist dictator fucking everything up, but I'd forgotten the Nazi/air-to-ground connection.

Both sides actually got foreign aid; the foreign aid to the fascists was just much, much more effective. The Republicans mostly got foreign volunteer troops drawn from the ranks of radical leftists around the world, along with some munitions from the Soviet Union, as I recall; the Nationalists got quite a lot of real military aid in terms of actual troops, aircraft, munitions, etc from the fascist states, most notably Italy and Germany. Believe there was an incident where two Garibaldi Brigades faced off against each other - one sent by the Italian government to help the Nationalists, one made up of Italian leftist volunteers.

Anyway, yes, it was a pretty brutal thing and very much a preview of what mechanization was going to mean in the 2nd World War and the massive usefulness of air power.

Honestly I have no beef with the author of Hetalia except that they gave Japan a free pass. I saw an episode and it was silly.

When you say "stanning the Axis" do you mean the Hetalia characters that make up the Axis, or the actual real life version? Because if it's the former, I don't see the problem. They're fictional characters from a gag comic loosely based on historical events. If it's the latter, though... is anyone really that stupid?

What's the major difference?

I mean once people start going to conventions in fascist outfits and getting angry whenever anyone brings up the actual war in a conversation about a parody of said war they're idiots. I mean you have a bunch of people who don't actually understand the history getting that history through... a very yaoi-ish fandom. I mean I'm sure that's not what the writer intended; that's like blaming Bronies on Lauren Faust. But it's a problem.

Imagine if people celebrated their love of The Producers by writing hurt/comfort about Franz Liebkind that they take terribly seriously

I'd say the major difference is that Hetalia started off as a thing about WWII, but it didn't stay that way. Obviously the reasonable fans aren't going to write fluffy shipping fic about those characters during that particular time period when there are so many other points in history to choose from.

lol tbh though the Allies are a lot more popular than the Axis in the fandom, for the most part.

Also he doesn't really give Japan a free pass more than anyone else. Actually Japan is one of the only characters that he actually shows doing something outright terrible.

Gave Japan a free pass? Dude, Japan gets it just as bad as the rest of the cast, if not worse. At least in the dub, the show has no qualms about majorly satirizing Japanese stereotypes.
