as they should be. they're not oppressed because they DON'T EXIST.
they're just normal ppl trying to feel special.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Or, they're mentally ill. In which case, it's not really cool to make fun of them. You wouldn't make fun of a person with schizophrenia's delusions or a person with bipolar's mania, right? Why is the OP here fair game, then?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Because Otherkin isn't an illness. It is just daydreams combined with stupid.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
People used to say that gay people were mentally ill. And don't get me started on what they used to do to trans* people. I don't know much about Otherkin but to just right them off as stupid or daydreams then you have to question anyone who doesn't fit the "binary norm".

Um. No you don't. Why don't you try again while I go right some more otherkin and transethnics off.

The fact that this particular diagnosis was nonsense/based on bigotry does not invalidate all other diagnoses.

pffft. It's just like those people who claim to be "transracial" or something (I don't remember the exact word they use) that feel like they are "a german trapped in an american body" or some similar shit.

They deserve nothing but contempt.

I.. had not heard this term before. I always wished I'd been born in another country though and felt a weird kinship with celebrities from that country.... shit.

Christ. Can we go back to the days before everybody had to have a label for their own personal insecurity, please?

Or transabled. I mean I'm totally transabled: I'm a able-bodied person, my body just hasn't caught up with fact yet. I keep telling it I don't need that cane, it just doesn't want to listen.

And it's probably a terribly stereotyped german trapped in an american body, too.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I might agree with you, if my experience with my boyfriend's kinfeels didn't involve less of him talking about it and more of him curling up foetally and crying because his body doesn't fit. As someone with pretty intense body/gender issues, that does ring true, but that isn't even why I don't believe he's consciously making it up. It's hard to put into words, particularly if you don't know him, but he's embarrassed about being 'kin. He hates being 'kin. Not just because people are insulting about 'kin, but because he's a scientist, and otherkin doesn't fit into his scientific beliefs about how the world works, and so since it's started affecting him, this (atheist, rational, very intelligent) man has had to shift his entire worldview to the point where he knows either he's insane or the world is.

Like I said, it's hard to put into words, and I know it's not going to make you change your mind, and probably wouldn't even if you didn't know him. And, yes, maybe he's delusional. Maybe it's a mental condition, albeit one that's only actually hurting him (and his friends by extension, but only because we have to watch him struggling with it). But I refuse to believe that it's "trying to feel special" or attention-seeking or anything like that. He never talks about it except to people he trusts - I knew him for three or four years before he told me, and he treats it like a joke even though I know it frequently brings him to tears (and, believe me, this is not a man who cries often). He doesn't claim oppression. He knows he's a cishet able-bodied man who, aside from his skin colour, is pretty much in the least oppressed group around, and nothing he's ever said to me has suggested he feels otherwise.

What I'm saying is, maybe there are 'kin who are "just normal people trying to feel special", but my experience with the 'kin I've known suggests that at least some of them are just trying desperately to not be 'kin. And it isn't working for them.

They're not oppressed, but it isn't because they don't exist, and they're sure as fuck not all making it up to look cool.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
did you seriously just use the word "kinfeels"

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, because the only other word I can think of for it is "dysphoria", and I'm aware of how problematic that would be to use wrt otherkin.

Not sure I see the problem here?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I love how in these threads about contested labels, there's always someone with a boyfriend who identifies with said label.

SA

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I hadn't noticed that, honestly. Then again, I don't hang around F!S threads all that much. I usually just check the secrets themselves and then bog off.

It doesn't surprise me that there would be, though. I mean, it's enough of a distance to be able to keep one's cool, but close enough to care what people have to say. If that makes sense?

Hello. I'm the boyfriend in question. Just in case th'art suggesting I don't exist and am made up for the sake of argument.

The anon to whom th'art replying is [personal profile] ungoddly (of several other names also ending in "oddly" - something to do with an RP, I understand) being too lazy to log in. They were trying to keep me out of this (I have something of a tendency to react badly to things like this, and I think their post should give some idea why), but, well, when people say I'm not real...

That's the thing, though. Trans* are affected by their chemical makeup and brain chemistry. They feel like the other gender because they have a similar makeup to the gender they feel they are. No human, non, zip, zero, has anything biological or chemical related to a wolf or a unicorn or a zebra-fairy-angel-hippo-ox. It's so insulting to people who have a REAL issue, and not "Oh my god, wolves are so kewl, why can't I be one? Bahhhh"

NO. WRONG. BAD. STOP.

Christ, I agree this otherkin stuff is bs, but your biological essentialist bs ain't much better.

Signed, a trans* person who doesn't owe their identity to ~chemical make-up~
