Because otherkin are still Socially Acceptable Targets.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
And deservedly so. It is fucking appalling that they try to clamber on the LGBT rights wagon and make it harder for the LBGT folks to get recognition due to the OtherFurry antics. I'd burn them in their own fursuits.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
THIS.

"You can accept that a person who looks like a man is really a woman, so why can't you accept that I'm really a winged unicorn wolf trapped in a human's body??"

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I seriously doubt Otherkin are hurting LGBT rights. It's not a well known thing, not like LGBT. I don't see people standing outside of Congress supporting Otherkin rights. I'm a geek well versed in the ways of the Internet and I only just heard about Otherkin and their beliefs a year ago (knew about Furries and fursuits long before that but I didn't know about the niche known as Otherkin); it's not street knowledge.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Because being an Otherkin isn't a fucking right.

Holy fucking shit, this comment so much.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, seriously, I'm not otherkin, but my boyfriend is, and as a result I've read a lot of the #otherkin tag on tumblr, which one would expect to be a cesspit of that kind of behaviour, and the only time I've seen anyone equating 'kin to being transgendered has been in posts written by admitted trolls or as a strawman. Most of the 'kin I know are lovely, socially-aware people who are definitely conscious of their privilege.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen. I'm just curious, because this secret is the closest I've come to first-hand knowledge of this kind of behaviour. Is it just not on tumblr? Or on a tag that's not #otherkin or #therian? I would genuinely like to know where all these privilege-denying, false-equivalence-drawing otherkin are (mostly so I can avoid them, but also out of curiosity).

Also, is OtherFurry a specific group? An insult? Am I missing something here?

(for the record, I'm LGBT - pansexual and non-binary - if that's relevant. And part of the reason I'm asking is that I'm also kinky and demisexual, which are both labels/groups which come under fire for much the same reasons, and in which, once again, I've never come across anyone claiming their kinkiness or demisexuality counts them under LGBT)

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
And, oh yeah, they don't really exist.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
I assure you, I exist. I'm otherkin as well, and that's a lot like telling a theist that their god doesn't exist either. I don't hurt anyone with my beliefs, and I don't lobby for any kind of 'rights'. I just see what lessons it has to teach me, and roll with that.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
I refuse to accept your existence until after you've passed a turing test.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 01:05 pm (UTC)(link)

as they should be. they're not oppressed because they DON'T EXIST.
they're just normal ppl trying to feel special.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Or, they're mentally ill. In which case, it's not really cool to make fun of them. You wouldn't make fun of a person with schizophrenia's delusions or a person with bipolar's mania, right? Why is the OP here fair game, then?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Because Otherkin isn't an illness. It is just daydreams combined with stupid.

pffft. It's just like those people who claim to be "transracial" or something (I don't remember the exact word they use) that feel like they are "a german trapped in an american body" or some similar shit.

They deserve nothing but contempt.

I might agree with you, if my experience with my boyfriend's kinfeels didn't involve less of him talking about it and more of him curling up foetally and crying because his body doesn't fit. As someone with pretty intense body/gender issues, that does ring true, but that isn't even why I don't believe he's consciously making it up. It's hard to put into words, particularly if you don't know him, but he's embarrassed about being 'kin. He hates being 'kin. Not just because people are insulting about 'kin, but because he's a scientist, and otherkin doesn't fit into his scientific beliefs about how the world works, and so since it's started affecting him, this (atheist, rational, very intelligent) man has had to shift his entire worldview to the point where he knows either he's insane or the world is.

Like I said, it's hard to put into words, and I know it's not going to make you change your mind, and probably wouldn't even if you didn't know him. And, yes, maybe he's delusional. Maybe it's a mental condition, albeit one that's only actually hurting him (and his friends by extension, but only because we have to watch him struggling with it). But I refuse to believe that it's "trying to feel special" or attention-seeking or anything like that. He never talks about it except to people he trusts - I knew him for three or four years before he told me, and he treats it like a joke even though I know it frequently brings him to tears (and, believe me, this is not a man who cries often). He doesn't claim oppression. He knows he's a cishet able-bodied man who, aside from his skin colour, is pretty much in the least oppressed group around, and nothing he's ever said to me has suggested he feels otherwise.

What I'm saying is, maybe there are 'kin who are "just normal people trying to feel special", but my experience with the 'kin I've known suggests that at least some of them are just trying desperately to not be 'kin. And it isn't working for them.

They're not oppressed, but it isn't because they don't exist, and they're sure as fuck not all making it up to look cool.

did you seriously just use the word "kinfeels"

I love how in these threads about contested labels, there's always someone with a boyfriend who identifies with said label.

That's the thing, though. Trans* are affected by their chemical makeup and brain chemistry. They feel like the other gender because they have a similar makeup to the gender they feel they are. No human, non, zip, zero, has anything biological or chemical related to a wolf or a unicorn or a zebra-fairy-angel-hippo-ox. It's so insulting to people who have a REAL issue, and not "Oh my god, wolves are so kewl, why can't I be one? Bahhhh"

AND THEY ALWAYS WILL BE

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
I genuinely believe that some (definitely not all) of these people are ill and need help. I believe that in some cases, legitimatizing these delusions is enabling them and preventing them from getting the treatment they need.

My unpopular opinion.

Enabling delusions

[personal profile] darael 2013-04-12 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Except that, according to quite a large number of psych books in my SO's house, the correct way to deal with delusions begins with engaging them.

It's also interesting to note that I've had conversations with otherkin who, while seeing psychiatric professionals for other reasons, brought up being 'kin and were told that it wasn't something that needed fixing as long as the thing itself (as opposed to any conditions with it as part of the cause) wasn't preventing them from functioning.

This is, in fact, a very legitimate theory. As long as the delusions aren't going to make someone believe they can fly if they jump off a building or something, I would assume.
