I just get irritated in games where another character being killed means I have to be dead. WHAT KIND OF WORLD IS THIS? I can live without them, I swear. Let me live on!!!

I... can't necessarily agree.

I mean, I like when characters come along but can handle themselves. It always makes me happy when I have Alyx along for Half-Life 2 (and episodes). But straight up escort missions.....

Okay, I'm admittedly confused but at least you don't feel like throwing your controller at the tv or breaking your game disc during them.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-17 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate escort missions.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2013-04-17 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I have not played the game from your secret, so I'm probably missing something, but I do enjoy escort missions. And I too feel guilty when I fail and people die. And it makes me all on alert, looking out for dangers and keeping an eye on my charges.

What games are you playing, where the escorted NPC doesn't act like a damned retard? If they acted like they can count higher than "potato", an escort quest might be kinda fun...

I usually hate escort missions, but for one exception: the MGS2 escort of Emma Emmerich just fucking destroyed me. I just hated letting her die.

LOL at the shocked disbelief. XD I generally don't mind them. I do hate them when you're in a vehicle getting shot at, but if you're just running around with the NPC, it can be fun. Hell, Ico was one of my first (and all-time favorite) games and the entire game is a silent, beautifully-rendered escort mission.

I kind of agree. Kind of, in that not all escort missions are complete hell to go through. Except for the ones in Pokemon Mystery Dungeons when your escort gets hit enough times, and starts to run away from the group- only to get knocked out (and get transported out of the level) before you can reach them.

The issue people have is that they don't die precisely because it's not due to your incompetence, but their poor AI.

I love SH4 and Eileen. But if more of these escorts could let me equip them with purses to swing, I might love those missions more so I could at least get some laffs while I frustrate all over.

I can like an escort mission if I feel they've done it well. However, rarely have I felt they've done it well...

as someone in the middle of a fucking annoying escort mission right now, what the hell is wrong with you

I fucking love the Eileen half of SH4 and the Emma section of MGS2; I played both of these on baby mode because idgaf about sneaking or dealing with unkillable ghosts, that probably has a lot to do with why I adore these for the story instead of hating them for the AI (but but but protecting Emma was my life it's like you actually give a shit about the gameplay mission you're doing it's so good)

Zombie Baseball can go straight to hell though holy shit, the controls and hit detection were so bad

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
ICO and RE4 both pulled it off well and I found myself enjoying the challenge, even! So yeah I like an escort mission when it's good.

MGS3 though... Eva moves slow as shit and you have to shove food into her mouth constantly. That gets old really fast.

People hate escort missions because they're a challenge, but a different kind of challenge from what they're used to or like. For instance, in WoW your usual goal is to have great gear that finds the perfect balance between defense and power. You have to fight whole groups and dungeons. The idea is to be the strongest and most effective through planning.

What you just described is a totally different experience. For a lot of people, the stress isn't often worth the reward. I'm personally not a fan of escort missions either because of that.

Unfortunately, because its video games, most of the time something that is difficult but not what the players want is 'stupid'. Sucks man.

I don't mind escort missions, though I'll admit I haven't played many of them.

Right now though, I'm getting frustrated at differences between Dragon Age and Mass Effect. In the former, if the player character dies but other party members are still alive, you just play as them. In ME though, you're dead, even though your party members can die and come back, so long as you survive :[

I like escort missions because they make me feel like I'm not alone in a game. IDK. Creepy horror games make me want someone there, even if it's a NPC.

I've had siblings a plenty, thus hate escort quests AUGHGHHH.

I dislike escort missions because I'll be waiting to ambush some enemies or something and the person i'm supposed to be protecting will run out in the middle of direct gunfire at top speed.

yea that's not really fun. nor is it my fault they wanna be a bullet sponge.

[personal profile] ariakas 2013-04-18 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
Depends. Sometimes escort missions can be done very well and I've enjoyed them immensely.

Other times they make no fucking sense and I hate them. Either the AI is broken, or the protagonist is too daft to give a perfectly healthy, functional grown woman one of his EIGHT TRILLION GUNS with which to defend herself from unarmed assailants.

Seriously now. I'll take 7-5, you take 6. If that's too much responsibility, at least watch our six. Holler if someone is coming before they get within arms' reach, or something. No? Too much to ask? Jesus fucking christ, why am I saving you again? Your existence is a net minus for humanity.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
OP, you absolutely MUST play ICO. It takes the basic idea of an escort mission and turns it into one of the most beautiful, emotional games in existence. The relationship you develop with your companion is one of the most pure, beautiful, and touching I've ever seen in a game. Even people who normally abhor escort missions consider ICO a masterpiece. You can get it in HD on PS3!
