Real question: how is the show sexist and transphobic?

Maybe I don't pay close enough attention, and while I wouldn't call the show progressive it also never came off to me as overtly offensive either. I'm normally good and picking that sort of thing up, so if you could give me some examples it'd help me out.

(But then again I really haven't been paying super close attention to the recent seasons because I've felt the comedy overall has gotten weaker.)

Different Anon: I was wondering the same thing. Granted, I'm not glued to the tv when it's on, but I cant remember anything offensive.

Hanging out to see how people respond. I really like Pysch and I'm genuinely curious about the possibility that I'm missing something.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-17 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I was wondering. There was an episode that made me cringe in the first season (where the guy with MPD had a personality that was a woman and another one of his personality's was trying to kill the doctor who was going to help the female persona have gender reassignment surgery and omgwhatPsych) but I can't think of any transphobic issues recently.

I can't think of any sexist moments either, really. Jules and the Chief are every bit as capable as the men are and neither of them are overly sexualized. There could be something inherently sexist in that the cast has more main male characters (four) than female (two, and really the Chief almost shouldn't count as a "main" character) but I've been really enjoying that they've let Jules relax and shine a bit more, giving her some goofy moments similar to what the guys get. It helps make her a stronger character, to not have her as the lone major character acting as straightman.

OT

Jesus fucking Pringles I am sick of television MPD. Since when the fuck can you even get a diagnosis of GID if you already have a diagnosis of DID? You're never going to get insurance coverage for SRS.

I seem to recall that the person in question wasn't diagnosed with DID at the time... I might have that wrong, though, and I agree with the ridiculous portrayals of MPD on TV. *Shakes head*

(Anonymous) 2013-04-17 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, in the latest episode there were a lot of jokes centering around men in dresses or women who had surprise penises or the like. Just general "haha, that is not really a woman/it is an ugly man in a dress!"

Does that count?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-17 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
da

I only remember one joke along those lines and the guy was meant to be seen as a creep. It was gross that he was asking a group of women whether they were prostitutes and even grosser that he then wanted to check to see if any of them had penises. But the joke wasn't that "omg fooled again by the transvestite prostitutes!" but that he was so awful and nasty a character. The women were all rightfully offended by him.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-17 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope it was definitely a repeated joke. I remember rolling my eyes at the first one and then getting annoyed at the repeats. The woman they replaced in the switch? There were jokes about how she was actually a man. And I recall a couple others.

OP Here

It's not. Or anyway, it only offends people who are REALLY over-sensitive.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-17 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
What does "transphobic" actually mean, anyway? For instance, I think Chaz Bono is quite grotesque, so I suppose someone would stick me with the transphobe label just for (having eyes) that reason alone.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-17 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
This comment smells of wankbait to me, but all the same: transphobia is analogous to homophobia, and is generally characterized by an aversion and/or hostility towards trans* people, and/or hostility to the concept. I don't think aesthetics enter into it?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-17 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
OK, fair enough.

I know people would immediately jump to 'transphobe!' if someone said that a trans* person was unattractive, especially if they were referring to a transwoman, and no matter how sincerely the person just meant 'they aren't attractive to me,' you couldn't convince them it was the truth. So aesthetics does factor into the label being thrown around.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-17 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
And if that's the case, it automatically renders the label moot.

(I'm hoping that asking this question doesn't automatically make people jump down my throat.) Is there a reason for writing "trans*" as opposed to "trans?" Because I've always done the second, but I don't want to be making some sort of insult.

TBH Chaz Bono is kind of an ass so w/e really

(Anonymous) 2013-04-17 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I've noticed the trans*phobic jokes, but not so much the sexism. I think it's really only noticeable when you mainline the show, you start to pick up on some patterns.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Huh? What do you mean? I've watched psych from the beginning and have never seen any sexism. I know there was one trans phobic joke a season or 2 ago but when someone brought it up with James on twitter he apologised and agreed it didn't need to be there. I haven't seen the episode since but he implied they might fix it. I hope this doesn't sound like attacking op I'm just genuinely puzzled. My watch partners who are what the internet has meanly started calling ~sjw~ love it and they pick up on everything offensive like a personal litmus test :p

Btw is it me or is that not James in that picture..? Or at least a very heavily photoshopped him

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
OP here - I vaguely remember that a few years back, now you mention it. But if James/ the other writers said they'd fix it and/or not do it again, they dropped the ball in the second most recent episode.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
OP, I agree with you on one thing - I am not here for Jules/Shawn.

I don't really ship Shawn with anyone, cause he is such a giant manbaby.

Jules totally deserves someone better, as she is pretty kickass.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
A-fucking-men.

Psych is the best. That is all.

Huh? Even more okay with having dropped the show ages ago (couldn't stand the way Shawn treated Gus. Loved Gus, loved Lassiter, and felt kinda sad when I realized we never were going to get a Lassie/Julie ship. But just haaaated Shawn).
