I can't tell if you are trolling, are completely dense and insensitive and/or just worded this poorly.

I'm going to go with poor wording. The brutality of that scene was very- rightly- disturbing. Even though, technically, it's still fantasy, I think it was a pretty good reminder that non-con fantasies do not translate to real life. Rape is absolutely horrific.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
What is offensive about the wording? I don't see it.

I'm just generally offended by people who don't "get" the seriousness of rape. Really? You don't get that an horrible act of force and, in many cases, violence is serious?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
There are a lot of things that can make sense logically or intellectually but that you don't really get until something clicks. I don't see that as offensive.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I thought OP meant they finally got it on a visceral/very emotional level.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-22 08:34 am (UTC)(link)
Same. In my personal case - I'm an asexual, so on a visceral level, it's hard to me to imagine how much worse rape would feel than any other similarly-violent sexual assault. On an intellectual level, sure - it's just as unthinkable how someone could do something like that to another person, and I know how deeply it can hurt people and destroy lives. But there's just that small piece inside of me that can't understand it.

(If it needs to be said, again, in my personal case. Not making any attempt to speak for all asexuals.)

DA - Sometimes people need to see something to get the full impact. Hearing that someone was scared and desperately trying to fight back is not the same as seeing it, like in that scene.

But they get it now? Isn't that the important thing?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
They didn't do it on fingal's set timeline. They had to see it before they could fully grasp it and that isn't good enough for fingal.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
it's totally possible to understand something is horrible without actually having the visceral feeling of horror that you probably should have. I didn't understand the weight of assault until I was assaulted, personally.

And are people supposed to be born with an inborn sense of "getting it?" There's a difference between objectively and emotionally knowing something.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
if everyone did 'get it' we wouldn't be living in a rape culture, now would we?
i'm glad at least one more person is now less likely to say "but you were wearing a short skirt!" "but you wanted it right?" "what's the big deal?" "you're lying!" but depressed that it's not the norm that your comment suggests.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-22 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
I think that's being unfair to the OP. Lack of imagination does not necessarily equal lack of empathy.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
At least you get it now. That's the most important thing.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe I should watch it cause I don't feel like I get it. At least, I don't put it on this pedestal that other people hold it up to.
Especially in fiction when it's shown as the apex horror. "Ohze noze, our hero was tortured with knives, red hot pokers, and starved to death AND WORST OF ALL RAPEEED!" Huh?
Call me crazy, but shitty sex I don't want (with a bonus STD/morning after pill) seems way better then a knife/gun shot wound I don't want.

There's a kind of shame and humiliation associated with rape that isn't associated with torture. We see strong male characters survive torture all the time. How many have we seen survive rape and continue to be the badass guy all guys want to be? ...maybe Shawshank Redemption?

But I guess to sort of answer your question it isn't in terms of a physical thing (though injuries sustained during a rape can be a whole new kind of horrifying) as much as it is mental. For a lot of people physical pain is easier to process and cope with than mental pain.

Guts from Berserk. He was raped as a young boy by a man.

thankfully i have never been sexually assaulted myself, so i can understand the disconnect a lot of people feel with it, and i think this is the simplest way to put it

i don't really know what flipped the switch for me, but if bates motel really did do a good job of it, i think that would be a good thing for people who don't "get it" to watch then, since most media really does conflate it with 'just sex', or uses it for edgy shock value that works to desensitize

I agree with you here. A lot of rape scenes I've seen come off as if they're supposed to titillate the observer which is just... gross.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
oh fuck you

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Rape is more than just "shitty sex". It's a violation of body and mind and very personal.

Are you male? Because most of the people I've talked to who think rape is just bad sex and don't understand what the fuss is about have been male.

They put the point much more offensively and aggressively than it needed to be, but...it's still a point. For them, apparently, and for me as well, rape that didn't cause permanent physical damage would not be as bad as another physical assault that did.

But, I can feel this way emotionally, yet on an intellectual level understand that most people would be psychologically damaged enough by the act that they would feel differently. I can still understand that it's an abhorrent thing to do, without viscerally 'getting' it in the way the secret-poster has.

Does the mom rape her son?

If not, I don't care.

Wank aside, you should REALLY continue watching the show. It's my favorite new show this year (and of year 2012). I love the small town mystery of the show.
