Derek Morgan from Criminal Minds is the only CoC I can remember ever shipping with anyone (Derek/Penelope & Derek/Spencer FTW).

*Shrugs* I don't worry about it too much. I'm generally more attracted to men and women with lighter complexions (not to say that darker skin isn't beautiful, too, but that, personally, it's not what I'm very attracted to), so it's a given that "white" characters are the ones I tend to ship often.

Like I said, I don't worry about it too much. I'm certainly not racist, despite what some people might claim. I just like what I like. Nothing wrong with that, OP.

Criminal Minds is one of the few shows where I actually can't ship anything, at least not within the team. It just feels ... vaguely incestuous? And though I loved and adored the Morgan/Garcia friendship ("Woman, you are my god-given solace."), I was just so stupidly happy that it was a friendship, an onscreen male-female friendship of that depth and glory, that I didn't want them to get together.

About the only thing I came out of CM shipping was possibly Hotch/Rossi, and definitely Hotch/Blackwolf for that one glorious episode. *grumbles* Why did Blackwolf never come back?

Derek Morgan/lack of shirts. OTP

(Anonymous) 2013-04-21 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
A myriad of factors probably goes into this - one aspect is that some CoC are probably written as fairly sexless, as some media shies away from depicting inter-racial relationships.

Still, if you follow TV & films from outside the US mainstream, it's pretty easy to find things to ship with characters of color in media from other countries. It's good to diversify, watch something with subtitles, whether it's anime or Korean films or Nigerian films or Turkish dramas. There's all kinds of things out there that you may be into and not even know it.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-21 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay? You're attracted to who you're attracted to, OP. Just like not being attracted to women doesn't mean you hate women, not being attracted to PoCs doesn't make you a racist.

I myself find myself only shipping either people with fair or dark skin, but never 'brown' or 'tan' skin- I just don't find that complexion attractive.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-22 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
this

i do feel that not being attracted to PoC's can definitely be caused by racism, and it might be a good idea to think about that and what it means about society, and how it might impact personal bias when it comes to other things

but i agree it's no big deal if youre not attraced to people of color, and so long as you're not a vocal dick about it, it is what it is

(Anonymous) 2013-04-21 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm trying to think if I have any ships involving characters of color. Of course, as soon as I start trying to think of them, I forget two-thirds of the shows I've ever watched. And most of them don't have very many CoCs to begin with (which is a different problem).

Zoe/Wash. Zoe/Wash forever (screw you, Joss).

(Anonymous) 2013-04-21 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Zoe/Wash.

I liked and supported them, but not with the let me devour every fic and save all of the fanart intensity that I usually associate with "proper" shipping.

That's also how I feel about Sulu/Chekov.

Haha, that happens to me too.

I have some but most of them are smaller ships with little to no fandom and I'm not overtly enthusiastic or outspoken about them because of that.

Zoe/Wash is and will always be excellent!

I shipped Travis and Wes from Common Law SO HARD. SO HARD.

Luther/Alice from Luther.

Jessica/Harvey from Suits would be smoking hot, imo.

Also Andrea/Michonne (The Walking Dead) SHOULD'VE HAPPENED and near the end of last season of Once (Upon A Time) I started shipping Mulan and Aurora.

So...yea. Those are a few. (If anyone wants to rec me fic go ahead. >.>)

Everyone's a little bit racist
Sometimes.
Doesn't mean we go
Around committing hate crimes.
Look around and you will find
No one's really color blind.
Maybe it's a fact
We all should face
Everyone makes judgments
Based on race.

If you mean shipping as in OTP, not so much, but then I don't really OTP at all. In the 40-odd fandoms I've written for/read in/wandered through, I have like 5 OTPs? Tops?

If, however, you just mean shipping as in 'characters I would like to write/read in fic together', then ...

James Rhodes from MCU (with Tony, Pepper, Natasha and/or Maria)
Nick Fury from MCU (with Phil, Peggy and/or Howard)
Joss Carter from Person of Interest (with Finch, Fusco or Zoe Morgan - I don't like Carter/Reese)
Nathan Jackson from the Magnificent Seven (with Raine and Ezra, mostly, or Buck)
Nyota Uhura from Trek: TOS (with Scotty, McCoy and possibly Sulu, I rewatched 'The Naked Time' recently)
Hardison from Leverage (with Parker, sometimes Eliot)
Brigadier Bambera from Doctor Who (Bambera/Ancelyn forever and a day)
Dave Lister from Red Dwarf (with Rimmer)
Trudy Joplin from Miami Vice (Trudy/Gina was my first femslash pair)

... And probably a few more, but I starting to forget what shows I've watched right now.

If you don't ship it, you don't ship it, I guess. I probably wouldn't worry too much?

I would like to give you a fistbump for your MCU ships. And one for the rest too though I'm not really familiar with them.

I think it's more of the lack of representation than anything. Off the top of my head most of the ships I like don't involve a character color, but that could be attributed to the fact that characters of color aren't being put in a main/lead role enough.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-21 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I always end up shipping white guys because the character type I like and find shippable is always portrayed as white.

I saw a gifset on tumblr yesterday where that pretty young black guy from Community (sorry I can't remember his name, haven't found a way to get my hands on the series yet) was talking about how he had tried to get a role as Spiderman and been told "there are no kids like that who are black". So that's the exact character I'd like to see more of onscreen. Take the sweet, funny and kind young supernerd...and then shock! horror! cast someone who's black.

You've never had an anime ship?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-22 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
For all intents and purposes, anime ships don't involve characters of color, though. They involve animated people. :/

DA.

I ship CoC, but I've never even SEEN an anime.

It's not really that popular in the US.

I don't know, it's a bit weird if you have a mindset where a POC can't be sexy to you. You like who you like, and you can't necessarily help it, but if all POC aren't sexy to you, regardless of their individual features, that's a bit... I don't know, strange? it's like, in any race, people don't all look the same, and certain features basically exist in all races, even if they are rare in some.

But yeah, that aside, with the exception of Japanese characters (because of anime) or characters of ambiguous race (tan skin, etc) I'm not sure how many POC I ship, but I think that's because there are just less POC in general in media. If a cast is mostly white, or Japanese, that's what I'll probably end up shipping if I do. Even if there's, say, one token black character, still the chance of shipping them is low because it's just one character and it's equally weird if you ship someone purely because of their race.

ngl, I seriously judge people who say they don't find people of a certain ethnicity unappealing or unattractive. Like, you've seen every white/latino/asian/middle eastern/black/etc person, then? You don't dig short guys, fine. Not a fan of long hair or muscular frames? nbd. But I seriously don't get it when people say "I don't find insert skin/eye/hair color attractive."

I ship John and Teyla from Stargate Atlantis.
Also I shipped Crichton(sp?) and Zaan on Farscape (she's blue does that count?).

(Anonymous) 2013-04-22 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
Well... It happens. You can't decide whom you find attractive or not. (Although that doesn't mean you haven't picked a too big of a pool to ignore.)

And sometimes it *is* about representation. When you have exactly *one* "token minority" character in the show you watch, you don't really have any choice in the matter (you ship them with someone or not).

I was (kinda) like you before: I didn't have any ship with PoC characters, and I was bothered by it. Then Lost happened, and CSI:New York (and then CSI:New York kinda un-happened), and NCIS:LA (and then NCIS:LA unhappened too), and then came Grimm and Common Law, I re-watched some ER, some Third Watch (although I didn't go to look for fic), and now I'm actually on ship!high, there's a shiny new OTP growing, Diggle/Oliver from Arrow, and oh boy, there's nothing wrong with representation in the last one! :-)

tl!dr: You can like what you want, and shipping habits may change.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-22 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I was going to say me too, OP. In fact, I've always thought I felt like that and then I remembered I ship John Luther and Justin Ripley.
