AAAAAA MOVING

(Anonymous) 2013-04-22 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Tomorrow, my partner and I sign the lease for our new apartment and hopefully we'll be able to start moving in by the end of the week, when I have a day off after a morning shift. Plan is: rent a Uhaul for that afternoon/night, move all the big shit and anything else we can fit, then the next day, we'll just move anything left over with the car.

Problem is...neither of us have any idea how to deal with packing shit/moving in general ;_____;

Any advice, f!s? We've got a good chunk packed up already, I know, but now we're getting into stuff that we actually might need during the week and...augh. What if I pack something away that I need before the move?! ;;

Your boxes will be stacked upon one another, so they need to be full, or else they will cave in and damage your things, but don't fill them up too much, it could weaken the cardboard and be too heavy.

Wrap everything that is fragile in bubble wrap or at least cloth. Use towels or old cloths to wrap around your plates for example!

Keep the most important things close, especially important papers and know where your valuables are.

Make a list of everything you might need during the week.

Don't wreck your back and good luck in your new apartment!

Seconding the don't wreck your back thing - before you start moving heavy or even a lot of medium-load items, take five minutes to google for a diagram on how to lift things so as to safeguard your back (basically, lift with legs, not by bending/straightening your back).

Seconding everything the above anon said. Also, try to get some help in moving; Many hands really do make light work. As for getting stuff that you might actually need, make a list (real or Word doc) of the things you many need and try and group your most needed items together. This will be the things you will use during the moving.

Hope this helps!

When you move into the new place, put everything in the proper room. Arrange your furniture before bringing in boxes if at all possible.

Designate an area in the new place as a temporary hub for day to day essentials (paperwork, keys, purse, phones, etc) until the chaos is over. Do not let anything that isn't part of your day to day essentials near it. Don't set a box next to it or unpack there or anything like that because nonessential stuff eats essential stuff during a move unless you're really careful.

SA

I forgot to say that taking pictures of boxes just before sealing them is a great way to help you remember exactly what is inside and easily locate things if you accidentally pack something you need. Frame the camera so you can see the top contents but also so any markings on the sides/flaps are visible.

In addition to the good advice above, if you have the patience and time for it, make a list of the stuff you're packing and label the boxes.

Like, box C1: has winter clothes, write down in your list which clothes, box C2: summer clothes, write these too, etc.

I just did this too! Less than a month ago. Fortunately only about ten minutes away from the previous place, so it was easy to go back and forth for the stuff I forgot, but it doesn't take many trips before things get tedious. All those last little miscellaneous things will grow exponentially and take up far more space in your car than you think they should, so pack as much as you can into every trip.

Put the hardware for any furniture you have to take apart in individual, sealed and labeled plastic baggies. Put all of those in one big bag, along with any required tools for reassembly. Make sure that goes with you when you move the furniture! Putting the big stuff in first is a good idea. Plan ahead for where you're going to sleep and make sure you've got enough supplies (food, disposable dishes, toiletries...) for the next morning.

Blankets and towels are also great for packing more fragile things in, or for putting between furniture pieces so they don't rub.
