lol we all go through the "grammar nut" phase.

don't worry, op. you'll get over it.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-22 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Why does it have to be something to "get over"? Why isn't it allowed to bother someone when people don't use the grammar conventions that exist to make writing easier and clearer to read?

Preferring proper punctuation isn't being a "grammar nut". That's like saying someone who prefers to wear their underwear beneath their clothing instead of outside it is some sort of "fashion nut".

(Anonymous) 2013-04-22 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
But capitalization is not punctuation?

This

Thanks for the update, Captain Obvious. Now if you'll go back and reread the secret, you might notice that the OP never said anything about forcing her friend to use proper punctuation, he/she just said that it's the reason why she rarely reads her friend's personal posts.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2013-04-22 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people choose to type that was as a personal style. It bugs me and honestly I'm less likely to follow journals that choose that style, but eh, it's their personal journal they can do what they want.

Dude, take a chill pill. It's their personal journal, they can type however they want. Besides, it's a really popular typing style now and anything in English that is widely-used quickly becomes 'official English' anyway.

That... tends to be a stylistic thing, anon. I know several published authors who don't use capitalization or fully punctuate their blogs.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I'm going to take a wild guess and say you're not a fan of e.e. cumming, huh?

I probably wouldn't read it, either. Nothing personal, I just find it headache-inducing to read walls of text when people don't bother with punctuation.

I also LOL at the whole "but it's my personal style!!" B.S. Unless you're ee cummings, no, it's not a "style", it's just being lazy and disinclined to use proper punctuation. At least have the courage to own it, folks.

ahhh it's the return of the language police

i think there was something like this a while back, and i'll say the same thing that i said before: for a lot of people, the internet is for fun???? like if people don't capitalize or use proper punctuation in their fun fandom zones or whatever then that's their call. it's not like they're automatically being inconsiderate by doing so and it's not really anyone's job to ensure that everyone approves of their use of english. plus, language has been morphed like crazy online (and in any subculture, if you stick around long enough/pay attention) and it's kind of fucking beautiful. welcome to the internet.

i tend to forgo capitals more when i'm using a chat client, playing a game, or in some sort of environment that functions more in real time. still, it doesn't bother me to see entire journal entries typed out this way. i actually find the different conventions used for written language in different spaces fascinating.

(Also, are you talking just about her lack of capitalization in her entries in your secret? Because that's not actually punctuation.)
manifold: Heisenberg was here. Maybe. (heisenberg was here)

I don't really care about capitalization as long as there's enough punctuation. If you write more than a sentence or two without punctuation, I'm going to have trouble parsing where one phrase ends and the other begins. Add in long paragraphs and I am basically helpless.

Verbal processing issues are kind of a bitch that way. I gather dyslexia's not much better. But I just assume Everyone Without A Disability can read just fine, otherwise no one would ever intentionally write that way to begin with.
