'Isn't' makes the secret make a lot more sense...

(Anonymous) 2013-04-22 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)I watch BBC Merlin because it's entertaining, but I don't ship anyone (and even if I did it certainly wouldn't be Guinevere/Arthur). That still doesn't mean I can stick my fingers into my ears and say, "Oh, no, Guinevere/Arthur aren't a couple in the series". That's just stupid.
It also doesn't work that way.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-22 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)The genre of the show is sci-fi/BL. That's not fanservice, that's actually sticking to their genre.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-22 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)I don't actually think their personal relationship was unnecessary. If it weren't for it it'd be a pretty run-of-the-mill dystopian revolution story. With the romance it's a romance sci-fi, yay!no subject

I'll just leave this here....
(Anonymous) 2013-04-22 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)Shion reflects mentally that it’s the first time he’s ever seen Nezumi cry—and it made him realize how truly precious Nezumi is to him. It’s not friendship, not merely a deep affection even—nor is it simply romantic attraction or respect or caring. It is a deep and powerful love for someone dear to him.
He’s felt this feeling once before—it’s the same thing he felt that stormy night, the moment when they first met. He wants to protect Nezumi, to care for him, even if it costs him his own life.

I would hesitate to call it "BL" (and I don't think it's officially classified as such) because it doesn't really fit into that genre or any of its tropes aside from the fact that it features a same-sex romance as a subplot to the main story. Difficult distinction to make, I know, but when I see BL, I think stories with romance as their centerpoint.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 01:47 am (UTC)(link)plus there's so much baggage that comes with the term "bl", the way fans treat it makes me hesitant to use it to describe non-genre queer relationships even in japanese media

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 12:52 am (UTC)(link)What hooked me into No. 6 was the prettiness and the plot, but Shion and Nezumi's relationship was a really wonderful surprise to me. Not just because it was a certain shade of queer, but because whatever they have between them is sweet, powerful, and genuine.
It's an example I wish more people would build on, just because it develops so naturally.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 01:43 am (UTC)(link)Though No. 6 was not without flaws (I feel as though the anime would have been better had it been longer, and the red herrings were disappointing because the actual climax wasn't as interesting, aside from the emotions from Nezumi and Shion, of course), what really impresses me is that it ISN'T a BL anime. It's not considered BL or yaoi, or romance for that matter. Its genres are shounen, action, and sci-fi. But the main characters happen to be gay. That's amazing. And it's not "gay subtext" or "bromance", it's... gay.
I didn't even know there were people who denied it. It's in the open.

sadly, yeah, there are lots of bitter homophobes out there who were/are still totally in denial about the romance or dropped the series purely because of that because OH NO, heaven forbid they find gay people in their sci-fi!!! or whatever

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 08:46 am (UTC)(link)A series/movie that is actually a fairly good Sci-Fi(para/action/adventure/historical) series/movie in which the main romance just happens to be a gay one, without it being such a big deal it becomes the main topic.
