People actually deny that? Seriously?

What is wrong with people?

God, until I read this response, I was reading the secret as 'If you seriously think this is canon...'

'Isn't' makes the secret make a lot more sense...

excuse me, I watched it for the PLOT, not the unnecessary bl fanservice for shallow fangirls.
me, yesterday:

lol someone doesn't know what bl or fanservice mean

(Anonymous) 2013-04-22 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. Just because you watched it for the plot doesn't mean you have to be willfully ignorant to the fact that the series is BL.

I watch BBC Merlin because it's entertaining, but I don't ship anyone (and even if I did it certainly wouldn't be Guinevere/Arthur). That still doesn't mean I can stick my fingers into my ears and say, "Oh, no, Guinevere/Arthur aren't a couple in the series". That's just stupid.

It also doesn't work that way.

That's like saying you don't watch action movies for the action, and what's more, any action is just fanservice for shallow action fans.

The genre of the show is sci-fi/BL. That's not fanservice, that's actually sticking to their genre.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-22 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I watched it for both. What now?

I don't actually think their personal relationship was unnecessary. If it weren't for it it'd be a pretty run-of-the-mill dystopian revolution story. With the romance it's a romance sci-fi, yay!

Holy shit, nothing annoys me more than people (a.k.a. you at the moment) saying that No.6 is BL or BL fanservice. Have you even read the novels?

I'll just leave this here....

Shion reflects mentally that it’s the first time he’s ever seen Nezumi cry—and it made him realize how truly precious Nezumi is to him. It’s not friendship, not merely a deep affection even—nor is it simply romantic attraction or respect or caring. It is a deep and powerful love for someone dear to him.

He’s felt this feeling once before—it’s the same thing he felt that stormy night, the moment when they first met. He wants to protect Nezumi, to care for him, even if it costs him his own life.

Can someone clue me in as to what show or whatever this is? Now I'm curious.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-22 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a BL anime series called "No. 6"

It's a sci-fi dystopian series called "No. 6"

I would hesitate to call it "BL" (and I don't think it's officially classified as such) because it doesn't really fit into that genre or any of its tropes aside from the fact that it features a same-sex romance as a subplot to the main story. Difficult distinction to make, I know, but when I see BL, I think stories with romance as their centerpoint.

not in the fandom but does it really twist people's panties that much if a completely unrelated person wants to deny the obvious it literally has zero affect on you

I didn't know that was a thing. Shion and Nezumi are pretty clearly in love. I mean, aren't the books the anime is based on light bl?

[personal profile] ex_paola492 2013-04-22 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
LIES! They are clearly friends who kiss! And hold hands! And dance! And are gay for each other... FRIENDS I SAY!!!!

(Anonymous) 2013-04-22 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol, at least the mental gymnastics people have to pull to deny it are entertaining.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
they're clearly a couple but i dislike how some fans call it "bl anime" because it implies romance is the main genre. unless you ignore like 90% of the series, it isn't.

+1

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
i don't think it was ever marketed as bl anyway, which unfortunately seems to be what lends to some of the wank in western fandom, because some people feel ""betrayed"" by the presence of unlabeled queerness in their digital cornflakes

plus there's so much baggage that comes with the term "bl", the way fans treat it makes me hesitant to use it to describe non-genre queer relationships even in japanese media

I will seriously never understand people who think that way.

What hooked me into No. 6 was the prettiness and the plot, but Shion and Nezumi's relationship was a really wonderful surprise to me. Not just because it was a certain shade of queer, but because whatever they have between them is sweet, powerful, and genuine.

It's an example I wish more people would build on, just because it develops so naturally.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
People denying it? It's... canon. Literally, they kiss. and are gay for each other.

Though No. 6 was not without flaws (I feel as though the anime would have been better had it been longer, and the red herrings were disappointing because the actual climax wasn't as interesting, aside from the emotions from Nezumi and Shion, of course), what really impresses me is that it ISN'T a BL anime. It's not considered BL or yaoi, or romance for that matter. Its genres are shounen, action, and sci-fi. But the main characters happen to be gay. That's amazing. And it's not "gay subtext" or "bromance", it's... gay.

I didn't even know there were people who denied it. It's in the open.

all of this. it was flawed and kind of a hot mess at times with lots of plot holes but it gets an A+ for handling its handling of a same-sex relationship in a really classy way.

sadly, yeah, there are lots of bitter homophobes out there who were/are still totally in denial about the romance or dropped the series purely because of that because OH NO, heaven forbid they find gay people in their sci-fi!!! or whatever

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
shounen isn't a genre, it's a demographic. most of the novel readers are women, and the manga based off it is being published in a shoujo magazine. it's not shounen because it was never marketed at a young male audience.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
It's actually the kind of series I would love to see in a western TV series or movie some time:

A series/movie that is actually a fairly good Sci-Fi(para/action/adventure/historical) series/movie in which the main romance just happens to be a gay one, without it being such a big deal it becomes the main topic.
