I hear ya, I hear ya.

BUT. I can't remember for sure when it comes to Basch, but in the case of Luke I've seen plenty of official Japanese merchandise/art that romanizes his name "Fone Fabre". (Although that technically means that the translators still got it wrong, but you catch my drift.)

(Anonymous) 2013-04-22 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I thought Luke was just 'Fon Fabre' because of fonons. OOPS....

Is it wrong that I thought that as well ><; I think "fon" fits Luke anyways.

I thought the same thing.

Can we all just pretend that's why? Because I actually liked that explanation.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
IMO, I see no reason for this to not be true. I'm not familiar with the other game, but at least for Luke, he comes from a made-up world with a made-up language; there's no real reason their naming conventions should follow ours. And "fon" makes more sense than "von" anyway simply because of that particular world's science and belief system.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-22 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, idk about the other game, but the morpheme(?) "fon" is pretty meaningful in Tales of the Abyss (think "fonic"); I think they're pretty justified in chosing "fon" instead of "von" for his name. It fits in with the world.

Eh, I just figured that Ivalice is Fantasyland, and they're not obligated to stick faithfully to real-world naming conventions. The word "fon" is enough like "von" so that the person playing knows what it's supposed to mean, but it's fantasy-ified. I kind of liked it. *shrug*

Same. I actually find it odd when fantasy stories use the exact same naming conventions that Real Life does. Unless we're talking about alternate history or something, in which case it'd be weird for them NOT to be the same as the Real World.

Except if it was supposed to be "von" then the japanese would have been written ボン (bon) or ヴォン (von), not フォン (fon).

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
What, why?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I don't understand your confusion. I'm saying that if it were meant to be translated as "von," it would have been written as "von" in the original Japanese because there are 2 ways to write "von" and フォン or "fon" is not one of them.

I would agree, except the thing is, "von" is said with an "f" sound. So "von" actually does match up to "フォン"--it's the English written language being misleading here, not the Japanese.

(That said I'm pretty much +1-ing what everyone has already said about Luke's name--it's appropriate that way. Basch's seems more like an oops, unless they were going with ~it's a fantasy world~, which is possible because Final Fantasy.)

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Is it?

Either way, the japanese フォン is said with a softer f and o sounds, making it more like "phone" than a harsh "on" sound like you would get in "von," so in pronunciation and writing (and the fact that von is never written フォン), only ボン (bon) or ヴォン (von) would work as "Von."

It's written that way because of the German pronunciation. It's still supposed to be "von".

(Anonymous) 2013-04-22 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It's. Fantasyland. OP. Just tell yourself they've got a different word to tell you they're nobility of some sort that happens to be close to one in our world.

And aren't v's in German said as f's, anyway? Somebody correct my dumb ass if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure if that's the case it's just an English-phonetic reflection of an already extant word.

Agree with everyone in regards to TotA, the localization team obviously took note of how much people in that game love their fonon stuff, maybe they felt it would be weird to change fone to von.

By the way, the kana in Basch's japanese name is different than Luke, his name seems to be a just a direct translation...?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Basch's last name in Japanese is フォン・ローゼンバーグ, which would be something like fon Rosenberg/Rosenburg rather than Ronsenburg.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure their names had official romanizations before they were localized, so if you're going to blame anyone, it should be the original writers, not the localizers.

But ditto what everyone else said about the fon in "fon Fabre" relating to fonons. At least, I always figured that was why.

While I understand your anger, I hope you direct it to the editors and not the translators, since it ultimately is their decision how the final product will look like. I've had my fair share of fights and discussions with my editor, who doesn't speak the source language, trying to explain why it would be better to go with my translation, rather than what they thought sounds or seems better.

Hi, I'm a professional translator (although I don't work in games), and this is 100% correct.

Working with the licensors/IP owners is often a struggle. Better translations and adaptations get thrown out ALL THE TIME because someone on the other end with authority over the brand won't budge, and insists on the stupid spelling instead of the obviously better one.

Of course, mistakes do get made. I've made a few myself, and they haunt me. But it's more likely to have been editorial meddling than it was translator error.

I'm not fresh on Ivalice canon but... if I remember correctly, Basch wasn't a noble. On the other hand, everyone and their dogs have three names, Ashelia B'nargin Dalmasca, Ffamran mied Bunansa etc., so could it just be his middle name?
