What's she done this time?

Wrote a cheesy poem about the younger Boston bomber.

Jesus Christ.

She is really testing my ability to separate liking an artist's work and liking the artist.

That happened for me with the whole Evelyn Evelyn debacle. Not so much the original concept, but her reaction to being called out by disability activists.

At any rate, I still like her stuff. But she increasingly bothers me as a person.

Wait, what happened?

http://bostonist.com/2010/02/21/amanda_palmer_jason_webley_evelyn_evelyn.php

I don't think the original idea was all that offensive (speaking as a person with a physical disability, albeit not a conjoined twin). I think her reaction was abhorrent.

[personal profile] sugar_spun 2013-04-30 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, so these twins--Eva and Lyn--they're real people? But their backstory isn't? Or is it? And Palmer and her bandmate dress up as them and sing? And I'm not sure what's bad about her response. I didn't read the whole thing (there are a lot of links, maybe I should...) but this is what they quoted: "offending or belittling disabled people or people who have a history of sexual abuse could not be farther from our intention. we generally don’t like to offend and belittle ANYONE, but if there is anybody that we especially don’t want to alienate with this project, it is the people who might already feel marginalized and dismissed in our society. especially when that type of alienation is a major recurring theme throughout the whole Evelyn Evelyn record."

That doesn't seem bad? I'm not sure I understand. For the record, I've listened to maybe two songs from this woman and only know that she has a bad reputation and is generally rude and inconsiderate.

My thoughts on EE are that I don't think the characters are as "helpless" as the detractors say (they're entirely self-taught musicians, remarkably well-adjusted for having been raised the way they were, and escaped from two of their four abusive home situations with no outside help at all) and their backstory is so OTT it's ridiculous to take it even remotely seriously (c'mon, conjoined elephants?), but it could probably have been done better as an animated thing rather than the creepy dressup routine.

I'm with you on this. I like quite a bit of her music ("Map of Tasmania", the Young Punx song that she featured on with Peaches, is one of my favourite songs) but I just wish she would stop with so many things.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-30 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
What the fuck

you know, I'm an artist. I've made some "controversial" stuff. But if I hurt feelings I damn sure don't act all superior, but this Palmer woman seems like she hides behind the "but it's my aaaart" ideal and she thinks she should be untouchable. to an EXTENT it's a good argument, but she's abusing it because she's desperate for attention. seems like her career is slowly dying and she's throwing out some awful shit just to pretend she's still relevant. sad... and angering, considering what she's done.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-30 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
That's exactly what it is.

It doesn't help that she's married to someone way more famous than her and that she really blatantly regrets going solo.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-30 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
you know, i feel bad for Neil. I'm sure in the privacy of their home, when she takes off the mask, she's probably perfectly lovely. but good lord her public persona is AWFUL. she wants to be all ~wild~ because it's her ~image~ and she's purposefully hurting people in the name of art. Part of me wonders if they just... don't discuss work at home. His public persona seems so chill and relaxed and polite it's hard to believe he'd support how she acts (but I'm sure he supports her right to do so, and would never think he should "get control of his woman" like people have tried to tell him to do)

[personal profile] sugar_spun 2013-04-30 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? He seems quite desperately in love with her.

I've seen, from time to time, reports from people who have dealt with Amanda in person and it's all been very positive. Apparentlyshe's lovely, very nice and down to earth. I'm not a fan of hers, I wouldn't recognise her music at all, but I find it interesting how people can be one thing in person and their persona completely different online.

[personal profile] sabotabby 2013-04-30 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
IMO, it would have been totally justified if the poem was any good. But she admits that it took her nine minutes to write.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-30 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
ah so she did it just so she could pull some focus onto herself. no respect given, no thought, just "something bad happened, LOOK AT ME!" wow.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-01 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Totally not in favor of this poem or her actions, but I really hate how people say that a work isn't very good because it took x amount of time to compose. What's short for someone is long for another.

That said, yeah, the poem's not very good. If she hadn't called it a poem, I wouldn't have called it anything other than Internet mumbling.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-01 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
if it had been done in a short amount of time and still managed to be great (not to mention respectful), that'd be one thing. but it was neither. if she'd stopped to think about it (especially the "should i even do this" consideration) and taken her time, things might have been different. but this is not some huge judgement on quickly done art - some of it is great. this isn't, and it's partly tied into the sloppiness.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-30 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I love her music (listening to one song of hers at an opportune moment spawned an entire cowritten AU ficverse and made me a new friend ^_^), but I think she needs really serious help.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-30 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)

what

Wow, she's even worse than I thought.

This: http://amandapalmer.net/blog/20130421/

For those who have a low tolerance for misunderstood teen level poetry, she wrote a poem about one of the Boston bombers. Just more of her "let's make everything about meeeeeeeee" approach to life that some people find really deep. Or something.
