you know, I'm an artist. I've made some "controversial" stuff. But if I hurt feelings I damn sure don't act all superior, but this Palmer woman seems like she hides behind the "but it's my aaaart" ideal and she thinks she should be untouchable. to an EXTENT it's a good argument, but she's abusing it because she's desperate for attention. seems like her career is slowly dying and she's throwing out some awful shit just to pretend she's still relevant. sad... and angering, considering what she's done.

Those are both tacky (the video much more so) and a bit extreme, which seems to be her "thing" (from what I've seen/heard, not a fan), but still.. it's all just entertainment. People make her out to be a horrible person who has the potential to drown puppies and raze villages and push old ladies in front of moving vehicles.

(I admit I laugh at Something Positive and Ghastly's Ghastly Comic, which have both made rape jokes, but the jokes I was laughing at were about situations that couldn't conceivably occur in real life, which I think does make a difference. The more realistic one in SP wasn't funny.)

Well, she faked suicide so that her then-SO would know how much him relapsing into using drugs hurt her. She recorded it and put the audio of his reaction to finding her in one of her albums.

*shrug* People have feels. She expressed her feelings about the Boston bombing with a poem. That makes her an artsy fartsy type, but not much more. Also, I don't think she's going to self-destruct. She's got a solid fanbase and is married to a (probably multi) millionaire with a huge fanbase in the same sort of "quirky" genre. She'll be just fine.

I don't even know who this person is, but I just read the poem and... meh. I can't actually see how it's that offensive. It more seems like she's appointed herself the expert of what's going on in Dzhokhar's mind and I'm not sure where she got all of her data. Nor can I really tell what the point of the poem is (I guess that Dzhokhar is leading a confused life, the idiocy/naivety of youth, etc.?), not to mention I really don't think it's that good of a poem. But I don't believe it's wrong to make art about controversial, sensitive, and/or horrible topics, and is there something in the actual poem that is bothering people, or just the fact that she had the audacity to write a poem about the bomber suspect, especially when a poem humanizes him?

I didn't see any criticism toward Palmer for sympathizing with Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. What I saw was criticism about Palmer writing a tacky, crap poem in a way that draws attention to herself at the expense of both Tsarnaev and the people hurt by the Boston bombing.

My main problem (which isn't even that big, I don't really think about her that much) is that I think she, or at least her fans, think that she is smarter than she is. For instance, the idea behind her poem had the potential to say some really interesting things about terrorism, the modern world, globalisation, fear and violence, youth alienation, you name it - but the final product was just mediocre.

The fact that she failed to contribute something important with her poem combined with its timing pushed the whole thing into the mildly offensive category. There are times when it's important for art to offend; this was not one of them. Basically I think her whole schtick is style over substance. (Which is possibly why she and Gaiman work well together since I think they suffer from the same problem...)
