Ahem. Now that I've gotten that out of the way (sorry, but it's pretty much my only fandom right now and I feel alone in it sometimes): Do you specifically find the lack of Stabler boring, or is it the way the show has changed in general?
I'm curious because so much changed between season 12 and season 13; obviously Stabler leaving was a big deal, but I wonder if the people who don't like SVU 2.0 because he's not there would actually like it any better if he were still around after all the other changes were implemented.

I do miss the Benson/Stabler chemistry sometimes. I'm torn on the new characters; I love Rollins but Amaro is too much like Stabler-lite for my taste.

I wonder this about myself. I watched mainly for the Benson-Stabler dynamic and was pretty upset when CM didn't renew his contract. I needed a little bit of time before I could watch the new cast and when I was finally ready, I just didn't like the show anymore. And I honestly don't know if it's because of Stabler, the other changes in the show, or a combination of both. I suspect both and I also suspect that I eventually would have been able to handle either one of those things but that all of it at once is too much for me.

Still never enough Much though.

I really hate how they've had Munch and Cragen alternating episodes. I want to see them both gdi.

Also, is it just me or does he have way more chemistry with Benson than he should? Like I seriously thought he was the mystery man until was saw his hand on the plane (in a shirt that the deliciously-well-dressed Barba would never wear).
There's not such thing as enough Munch, but I find there's more than there was in the episodes right before CM left. So I'm alright with that. And unlike Lake (sorry, buddy, you were nice and all), I'm not miffed with Rollins for taking Munch's spot by Finn's side because she and Finn are fun times together.
And also, yeah, color me as someone who never shipped Stabler/Benson. I kinda got tired of the ship-teases too. I did appreciate the idea of a man and a woman who were partners and such close friends, but every now and again it just got too...serious? I dunno.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 01:33 am (UTC)(link)I think that a lot of the story-lines had began to be just plain ridiculous, recycled and just really, really bad.
His leaving, and the absence of his character, just seems to highlight the gradual decline of the show.

...and now I hear that something "bad" is coming Olivia's way ... and I have horrible fears about what that means exactly ... because I don't think I trust the writers anymore.

Like before, it was pleasant (or horrifying) background noise while I did my work. Now I actually just sit and watch it. And I went back to watch some old episodes (again, background noise) and found I didn't like them as much.
Part of it is Stabler. I was kind of really tired of him ages ago. He's angry and he has family issues and he's angry and he's angry and he's angry. Not saying he never had good episodes, but I don't find myself missing him. Especially not with Finn and his new partner being fantastic together, Munch getting to be in the show more often, and my absolute favorite, Sass-Bringer Supreme, ADA Barba.
Seriously. Watching an episode without him and his sass makes me kind of sad. I genuinely had trouble telling the other two ADA's apart (I mean, I liked them both, but their characters were so similar), and I have an allergic reaction to Harry Connick Jr (mostly just nausea). But Barba? He is wonderful.

What chaps me is all the "WHERE'S STABLER I MISS STABLER" posts on the show's FB entry. He's not coming back. They have had, like, nearly two seasons to accept it. Amaro's taken on some of Stabler's more... endearing qualities as a means of throwing 'em a bone. Good lord these people demanding Stabler need to get over themselves if they think whining loud enough is going to accomplish anything.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 06:21 am (UTC)(link)However, the show's been going on a long time, and...there's only so much that the writers can do when they're limited to SVU cases but also have to keep away at least somewhat from things they've already done and from things that are going to offend and alienate the prime-time viewers that keep the show going (a lot of whom are like my parents, who are content to believe that one of the morals of the story is that Sex is Dangerous and Will Get You Killed)...and there are only so many episodes one can have around a certain type of case when it feels more like they're going the RIPPED FROM THE HEADLINES route all the time now instead of only doing it once in a blue moon like in previous seasons--giving them a lot more leeway to develop characters and make their story the highlight instead of using the show to make a really heavy handed statement about Rhianna/Chris Brown, college rape cases, abortion, gay marriage, whatever the topic du jour is. A lot of what made those early seasons great was that even the one shot characters involved in the cases were more than caricatures clearly meant to be heavily based on issue-of-the-week personalities, and because of that the characters were more able to freely interact with them and each other based around them.
When I think of Law and Order of yore, I think of the episodes that were just good stories on their own. A lot of them had celebrity cameos, but you cannot tell me that, for example, the episode with Robin Williams wasn't really nicely put together, or the episodes where Mary Stewart Masterson would guest star. They really would make sure that those episodes were worthy of their talent, and...the writers really need to get around to doing that for the showrunners again if they're going to be nearly as compelling.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)Him leaving the show is what actually brought me back to watching again. I hope he stays gone.
