Welcome to the bane of the Teen Wolf fandom's existence. Unfortunately, our fandom is full of fic writers who haven't actually watched the show and therefore don't know the real characterization. The fanon keeps getting perpetuated and it sucks.

There's still plenty of good fic with excellent characterization but it's not as widespread as I'd like it to be.

hah! I was actually about to reply saying this was the bane of the TW fandom, too!

TW fandom really needs a good recs community for *quality* fanfiction. It is so time-consuming weeding through the crap.

I found a recs community on Tumblr with a category of "best canon characterization fic" - omg it was full of pack-mom Stiles and OOC everywhere. So disappointing.

I would love a good quality recs community in this fandom. With all pairings and gen and everything in between. *Love*

DA. It's pretty rare that I find a rec list that I agree with. Hell, the last time I came across one, it was more like a compilation of all the things I loathe in this fandom. Different strokes for different folks and all, but even on AO3 the kudos count doesn't tell me what would be worth reading.

I would totally support some sort of quality recs community.

Of course then you run into the issue of differing opinions on what qualifies as "good", "quality" or "in character".

NA. At this point I would settle for minimum requirements: good grammar, uses paragraphs, can spell the characters' names correctly, can remember that in canon Stiles and Lydia aren't magical and everyone doesn't belong to the same pack.

Then you could divide the fics into canon or AUs, and no, that A/O crap is never canon, and no-one should ever tag it as such.

That would be interesting. So far we've usually managed to be civil* in discussing different character interpretations and pairings, I wonder if that streak would continue through discussion of a recs list.

*(though there does seem to be one(?) anti-Sterek or mega Scott fan anon that shows up to rant now and then)

Eh, I don't mind dropping rec lists, but that's usually under the assumption that I make it pretty obvious about what I like while gushing about what I like about each rec. Haven't recced anything from anything in a while though tbh.

I like when people ask for recs though, and when they let people know what fics or themes and things they like; you can tailor a rec list for that person (like the people who do like pack mom stiles. there are certainly good fics with that fanon if you're into it).

Ha, but I've totally done this with other fandoms. I love crossovers and don't always have to know the secondary fandom if the plot is interesting enough. Overtime you definitely get some sort of fandom osmosis and certain ideas of what proper characterization is.

Bingo. Add onto that it's always Stiles who is the "mom." I actually think that, in many ways, Derek would be the more nurturing, caring parental figure of the two. But obviously this is also related to the many people who require Stiles to be the receptive sexual partner, i.e. "the woman" of the relationship. Gah. Gah.

I don't get "Pack Mom" Stiles.

I mean, Stiles is more the one that can be super kind and all, but he's also one of the characters that I see as more likely to cross some serious moral lines in defense of his (chosen and blood) family.

Scott's the super kind one. I see him as significantly more nurturing.

More annoying is the new trend of the ridiculous "puppy piles" tag. Gag.

If there is more than one of the teens as a main in the fic, I'm almost certain to peace the fuck out of it because it inevitably turns into god damned "puppy piles."

I wish there were more of a dedicated fandom to the adults. I'll take Peter/Stiles, Peter/Lydia, Peter/Allison, Chris/Lydia, Chris/Stiles, whatever, but, hell, let's face it, more mature writers (read: not 13 year olds) write the adults.

Maybe not exclusively, but I don't see a lot of poorly written adult character fic and I would rather read that than some badly thought out Sterek because OMGLOL DERK&STILES SO MF HOOOOOOOT and they just want to write out their immature fantasies about what they would do to Derek.

I love fic about the adults or that have a strong adult presence, but definitely not when paired with the kids. I wish there was more non-pairing fic. But yes, definitely seconding the request for more fandom for the adults of the show.

Ahaha~ Wow. Sucks to be you, OP, to be bothered by the characterization of characters you couldn't care less about. I also think it's a little cute though. I have had similar problems before.

I wish I had some way to help you but I don't really read crossovers much so I don't even have any recs. Sorry. On top of it all, Teen Wolf fandom tends to have a huge amount of OOC fic so it difficult to even find good non-crossover fic.

Guess we're all stuck.
