Foreign movies

Which is your favorite? Do you have preferred country of origin for those movies? etc.

AUSTRALIAN MOVIES! FUCK YEAH! (Australian movies from the '70's/'80's.) Right now, my favorite is Wake in Fright.

I think everybody should watch La vita è bella once in their lifetime. Amélie too though that is obviously an entirely different sort movie.

We watched Amélie in my French class in high school. Yes, in full. All of it. I...don't think my French teacher thought that one through.

Nollywood.

Nollywood has created the best Titanic you've ever seen.

It's hard to pick a favorite. Right now I'll go with "Certified Copy" but if you ask me tomorrow, you'll likely get a different answer.

France, because I can practice my French comprehension while watching/don't have to rely so much on subtitles.

Most of the foreign movies I've seen are French, a few German. I'm not counting movies from other anglophone countries because I don't think of them as foreign.

Anyway, my all-time favorite is L'auberge espagnole, but more recently I loooved Les intouchables (like the rest of the world).

Why wouldn't you think of movies from other anglophone countries as foreign? English speaking countries have values, points of view and stories to tell that can be markedly different from one another. That's not even accounting for the difference in filmmaking styles and genre trends.

Asterix! Especially 'Mission Cléopatrê'.

Oh! This is one of my favourites! How did the humour translate from French into English? Lots of references can be hard to grasp, partly because of who the actors are.

Oh yes, City of Lost Children! I love that one so much.

Un Monstre a Paris is another love of mine.
Go West: a Lucky Luke adventure would be even better if I could only find the French original audio.

I think my favorite non-American film is a toss-up between Shall We Dansu?, Adam's Apples, and Welcome to Dongmakgol

Runners up: The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros, Leafy: Duck Into the Wild, and XXY

Although I have this deep abiding love for old Soviet era Russian animation, too.

No real preference on country of origin, but I really love Korean and Japanese horror, and anything by Guillermo del Toro

Saxon. It's got Sean Harris in it. Great movie.

"You are the Apple of my Eye" is a Taiwanese film, and arguably the best romance movie I've seen in ages.

"Chance" is a dark humor Panamenian film. Saw it on a whim and it was great.

It's only partly in a foreign language, but I do love Monsoon Wedding.

I love me some Bollywood! Main Hoon Na is my fave and idgaf. It has everything! Military action-adventure with Matrix-style fight scenes, long lost brothers who hate each other but grow to respect each other, two romantic comedy subplots, amazing musical numbers - and, best of all, Shah Rukh Kahn goes undercover as a high school student. IT IS SET IN A HIGH SCHOOL. IT IS A HIGH SCHOOL AU OF ITSELF. So ridiculously great on every level of cheesy entertainment you can think of.

Everyone go watch Main Hoon Na right now! (Or, you know, when you have 3 hours to spare, ha)

Run Lola Run was pretty awesome. I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did.

Also, fond of Ghibli and have a soft spot for Spirited Away in particular.

French comedies! They crack me up. There was this one I got on VHS from the library, Le Chevre I think? English title is 'The Goat'. I laughed so hard I thought I was gonna pass out. Also the original version of '3 Men and a Baby', fantastic stuff.

I'm assuming you mean non-English movies since almost all the movies I like are in English.

That being said, I have watched several Thai horror films and a few Hindustani flicks as well as some Japanese anime ones. Can't see any of them being my favorite though.

Oh Anon, I so want to say American movies right about now, because that is foreign movies for me... Though I am usually not an arsehole and I know what you mean.

The ugly truth is that I don't watch films* that are not in English, Norwegian or Swedish. Both Norway, Denmark and Sweden have all made some pretty good films, which you all should watch!

*Except for school, and I haven't exactly enjoyed a lot of them tbh.

First part, there are way too many movies I like.

The second part, America.
