Because it weirds people out, and because Clint/Coulson and Steve/Tony show up in a lot of the same fics.

You just talked to us about it. ^^ Congratulations on your fajita! Divine food is totally worth being excited over. Something like that might be the highlight of my month, since I can't really cook, haha.

YAAAY! :) Actually, I can also promise more Bruce/TOny. At least three more medium sized epic fics :D

Extensive crossover-verse with Doctor Who

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Adventures of a Line Hopper series: http://archiveofourown.org/series/14720

Should keep you busy for quite a while if you take a liking to it, it's several hundred thousand words long in total ;)

I'm just glad it was useful! Honestly, I didn't really know if it was my place to say it, and I had just hoped I didn't come off as gruff or dismissive

And that's not stupid at all, anon!

Instinctively, I'd say that yes, there's definitely a place for it. However, I'm not really sure how to put that into action either.

With the advent of tumblr transforming open-forum discussion more into this really big game of telephone, on a larger and less personal scale the easiest way may just be meta essays. They would give you a lot of breadth to talk about the intersection of personal experience, portrayal of this sort of thing in the media, and the way it flows down in a way the audience can relate to.

Plus it would give a hook (fictional characters people care about) while also giving the breadth to give voice to important criticisms--since like I think you were saying originally, too, desensitization is definitely an uncomfortable part of this, and can also unfortunately be part of what makes them "palatable".

Otherwise I think just talking about them in whatever way you're comfortable with (you definitely don't need to put yourself on the line) and how that filters down through media, and why that's good/bad/other is pretty constructive in itself.

Deconstructing and analyzing specific instances and characters is also always a good way to communicate. Even maybe advice for fic writers, to help them avoid engaging in harmful (and just as often lazy) cliches that do little more than press a button.

On LJ and DW it could also just be easier to talk to people directly.

Anyway, sorry for prattling on. It's mostly just brainstorming, but I really do think that anything that helps people understand the depth of what they're writing and consuming is a good thing.

Me, too. As much as I want it, I can't think of school being worth potentially tens of thousands of dollars following me through life. It's hard enough to work off the measly thousand-dollar unpaid bills I have now. I might only try it when I have a job to make sure I can pay it off quick, but it's a catch 22 - need school to get a good job, need a good job to avoid school debt.

Yeah, writers are their own harshest critics. Just remember, no one's reading it but you and there's a delete button or you can fade to black if it's not a PWP.

Want fic recs? Fandom? Pairing?

I've been reading a lot of Avengers fic myself. I've found some bdsm fics that really do it for me in the fandom (even written by BDSM real life practitioners) like http://archiveofourown.org/series/29050 by Shaenie. It's steve/tony and what 50 shades wishes it was.

I like fics that involve emotional description as well as physical--just physical is boring to me. I like fics that are more d/s oriented since I love the exploration of subspace and topspace (although that's much rarer).

I like fics where one character drops the other one to their knees, so they're kneeling at their feet, looking up at them, making eye contact. Collars are nice here and the dom(me) hooks a finger through it controlling the sub actions. Telling them what to do.

Unzipping their pants/skirt with their teeth. Placing their mouth on their cock and deepthroating them or licking her pussy until she's had multiple orgasms. I like dirty talk where the top/dom/one controlling the action (let's just call them the dom) tells the sub what to do, what their fantasies are, how they're gonna fuck them next time.

I like where she dances her approval. I like the slow removal of clothes and where she's naked, but her domme is still clothes/minimally exposed. I like (sometimes) erotic spanking. Ever see Secretary w/James Spader (it's a BDSM love story movie, not explicit, but lovely); it has a nice spanking scene it w/the both of them clothed.

There's a big difference between not being involved in internet slacktivism and not caring about issues. Frankly I could not give a shit what campaign someone's launching for a woman of color princess in a disney movie when I'd much rather worry about the socioeconomic conditions of my country and what causes them and how to improve them. Complaining about the lack of people of color in Brave isn't going to do shit in the long run.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
What's the difference between Trollmegle/Trollplay and MSPARP? I don't use either one, but it seems like overkill to have two Omegle-style Homestuck RP sites.

This is ridiculously vanilla, but I really like when one character is holding the other while they they masturbate, just teasing them with light touches and dirty talk, eventually taking care of their own needs once their lover is really getting into themselves.

Bonus surprise mutual masturbation is also great, or a helping hand getting repaid with oral is always nice.

Consensual humiliation in a public place.

Um, yeah. I just like hands and mouths a lot.

Like I said, it's just a no-win situation. Whether you put in notes or not, there are some who will get pissed if you DO have tags for minor or background pairings, and some who'll get pissed if you DON'T. So I tend to just not bother with it at all.

And really? I've seen a lot of fics that tag other background pairings but not if they're canon, or they're by authors who I know tag background/other stuff but not if it's canon. (But then, things like "Canon level violence" or "canon levels sexual assault" irritate me, too.)

Did I miss something? Have reruns/torrents/legitimately purchased DVD sets disappeared recently?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'd be more worried if you could remember all the subgenres. Those are the people with nothing else going on in their lives.

AYRT

True, there is, but it's not a difference the OP specified. They said they're desensitized to "social justice problems", which would include such socioeconomic conditions as you mentioned because social justice has been a thing outside of the internet for a very long time. Your interpretation is more generous than mine, but both are about equal based on the little information provided.

Pokemon XY, Wind Waker HD, Link to the Past 2 - so E3, basically, where we SHOULD see more of all three AND new Smash Bros (fingers crossed!)... I THINK I'm looking forward to the Doctor Who season finale, not totally sure... ditto book 2 of Legend of Korra... and, at the end of the year, The Hobbit!

"What I'd like to know is: are there books that are this degree of disturbing?"

I would offer Clive Barker's books as among the most disturbing things I've ever read. The description of the Magdalen in WeaveWorld was the straw that made me give up his writing entirely. The mental imagery completely nauseated me.

(I'm not into comics/graphic novels and I don't know if this Enigma of Amigara would bother me.)

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
It's kinda weird you relate this scene with a previous relationship. It's hard to see the connection.

For me, I have a few collections and I love them a lot. They make me happy! So watching this scene was hard for me because I can really relate to the sadness Vanellope felt seeing her beloved race car destroyed in front of her. :(

:D Your welcome!

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
It's a combination of things but it mostly has to do with the fact that right around the 65 episode mark most channels consider the backlog of episodes large enough that they can safely get away with running re-runs for a few years before moving on to something new. It's pretty much the opposite of how serial shows like Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad is run. In something like that they broadcast to tell the story and they depend on people constantly tuning in to new episodes to drive demand and viewership. In cartoons, (and cable programs in general can be subject to this) the idea is to keep each episode as self contained as you can in order for the audience to be able to watch the show in any order at any time. This is especially true for children's television as it's generally seen that children aren't going to follow a complex plotline nearly as closely as an adult would, so emphasis is put on individual episodes and re-runs rather than star power and weaving a storyline with a clear beginning, middle and end. This is especially true with merchandise or superhero driven properties as the funding for the shows often hinges on the sales of toys or merchandise that rapidly changes to either try and create or follow trends amongst child audiences

OF course pretty much every cancelled cartoon has it's own unique nuances as well. For example, the 90's cartoon Gargoyles bit the dust due to changes in management at the Disney channel not knowing how to market it as well as the costs of its animation outweighing its own ratings. Animaniacs was cancelled partly because it failed to attract its target audience despite being popular with an older nerd audience.

Cartoons with plots like Avatar are notoriously hard to pitch and get produced and even what seems like wildly popular properties can be axed at a moments notice. Even with the internet popularity of something like the current MLP it's likely that it never would have made it past season 3 if it weren't the flagship ratings program of a brand new channel that Hasbro had risked tens of millions of dollars on startup and boosted worldwide sales of it's own MLP merchandise by something like 30% over the last 2 years.

To the people in management who decide what shows to risk money producing and broadcasting, it is often about reaching the largest audience with the smallest budget possible. For kid's especially since the age groups are much narrower than adult audiences, with separate shows targeted towards 3-6 year olds and 7-10 year olds (3 years= 3 seasons) whereas adult entertainment targets ranges like 18-35 year olds or 35-60 year olds.
