But they're both horrible people

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-05-09 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Their having a horrible relationship makes sense.

(This is assuming you feel bad about the treatment of characters who are horrible and are not making a statement about how horrible Family Guy is)

I don't think it's a loveless marriage, because we've seen plenty of tenderness between them over the seasons. I think it's more of a love/hate relationship, than anything.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
actually this latest season has been full of jokes about how they're both unhappy and want a divorce as soon as the kids leave etc etc - but like two episodes ago they're now saying the spark is back? so the jokes might be done, idk

/anon you replied to

Meh, that explains it. I stopped watching about two years ago. I certainly can't see Lois or Peter remarrying. NOBODY else would put with Peter's shit half as well as Lois does, and vice versa. They're both broken, awful people.

tbh any dose of humor in family guy that touches on a bit of realism kind of peels away the satire for me, because without the constant caricature and loud humor what's there is actually pretty fucking depressing to me

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-05-10 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
thank you - i think this actually puts into words what really bothers me about it. FG is a stupid, crude, dumb show with a handful of hilarious jokes (i watch it mainly cause my brother does and i'm in the same room as the TV most the time)... but the silliness of the whole thing is what lets me half-enjoy it. but touching on stuff like this? depressing. (doesn't help that my parents went through this and recently divorced, that's probably why)

i liked how Lois and Peter clearly loved each other despite both being pretty awful. gave me some hope.

and as other anon said they might have cleared this up in the show now? i missed that but i hope so

oh that sounds rough anon, and i hope you and your family are doing well

that's what i liked about them too, and i think that's probably the case, since that sort of thing isn't really drug out too much in shows like this, especially not with the main family

Well, I'm not sure why it would upset you, given that their relationship is in no way healthy, or even sane, but I have to agree that they love each other. They're like the Mickey and Mallory of non-murder and batshit crazy.

I haven't watched Family Guy in years, but this kind of depresses me. Peter and Lois's relationship was always fucking godawful in a cartoon way, but it always seemed like they actually did love each other.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-10 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Why the hell do people like this show? The writing is shit, the art is hideous and lazily animated, and it's not fucking funny at all.

It makes stupid people feel clever.

Also the first season wasn't that bad. The jokes were still pointlessly cruel but at least they were kind of smart. It's the only place I've ever seen a joke about Benjamin Disraeli.

Well that's the world told.

What else is objectivly bad, in your opinion postition as arbiter of taste and style?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-10 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, get you and your witty reply.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-10 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you. It's nice to be appreciated. :)

Because it lets them laugh at their lives, society, and culture while still letting them feel good about themselves.

I've always missed the Family Guy from the early seasons that had a bunch of irredeemably screwed up people who really loved each other in screwed up ways (and Stewie, who hated everyone), instead of just a bunch of irredeemably screwed up people doing random stuff. That aspect got shoved more and more to the side in later seasons and I traded it in for American Dad until I stopped watching TV.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-10 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I did this exact same thing, but I ended up moving on to the Cleveland show before my interest in tv died. It felt a lot more family oriented in a way, but I was so sick of Seth McFarlane by that point I'm not sure I could accurately judge it.

iawtc

i think Seth MacFarlane got pretty full of himself and ruined his own work

Yeah, I enjoyed the first three seasons. Even then, though, I thought it lacked the sincerity of, say, The Simpsons (and having rewatched the third season this past week, I stand by that word--the family and relationships in that show were very sincere and loving). But it wasn't really about absolutely horrible people doing absolutely horrible things and ha, that's funny!

It's like after his show got resurrected twice, MacFarlane just knows he's invincible and does awful stuff because he knows he can get away with it. He has zero restraint and after a certain point, that's just not funny anymore (see: Russell Brand).

The Simpsons has always had heart, an emotional core.

I've always thought Family Guy could benefit from having some heart, too.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-12 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Then don't watch it. I don't watch Glee or the new Two and a Half Men. I love the bitching for the sake of bitching :)
