The nicest person you know

[personal profile] iceyred 2013-05-10 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Who is it? Why do you like them?

Feel free to talk about multiple nice people.

There was a professor in my program and not only was he very patient with stupid people like me, he would make you feel like you were the only person in the room when he spoke to you. He helped me out when I didn't understand the material, worked with me on a couple of projects, introduced me to some books, and was an all around nice guy.

There was a girl I knew in Elementary/Middle school who was super sweet. In Middle School, I ended up lending her a book, but she forgot to get it back to me, and we went to different high schools.

Cue Senior year of high school, and doing an all-high school meet-up to go over some IB questions/review some things, and I run into her.

...And she had the book in the trunk of her car, just in case she ran into me again.

There was this girl in elementary school (this was a small school where there was a lot of interaction between students of different grades) who was two grades below me, but would occasionally hang out with me and be generally awesome and understanding. She didn't really have any reason to listen to me or anything, but she did and was always nice.

This one time during a field trip, a girl in my class was incredibly mean and made me cry uncontrollably, and the nice girl actually cried too because she was sad about me crying.

I truly regret not finding out her last name, or anything about her beyond her first name, and being so incredibly socially inept back then. I should have been friends with her instead of the drama-filled nonsense going on in the older grades. I sometimes wonder what she's been up to.

That's a really sweet story. Not sweet that a girl in your class was a jerk, but sweet that you had someone to support and empathize with you.

My high school Latin teacher. She was REALLY sweet, clearly loved her job, and went out of her way to be nice to her students; for a year in high school a bunch of my classmates and I would eat lunch in her room to watch DVDs and hang out. I went to a private high school that in general looked down on my college choice (a public state college that's honestly good, but not private and Christian) and my teacher was SO happy and proud of me.

She was generally very passionate about her job and went above and beyond for her students.

That's great that you had someone who supported you. Must be something about teachers.

My mum.

One time, my mum was doing the dishes, and a wasp fell into the water. My mum fished it out and put it aside to dry, but it was all soapy and couldn't move its wings. So my mum put it on a piece of paper, carefully washed the soap away, then took it to the bathroom ... and blow dried it. Very gently not to hurt the wasp. Then, she put in on the windowsill with a spoonful of strawberry jam. 10 minutes later, the wasp was buzzing about and out through the window.

If life was a fairy tale, every time my mum would be in danger, a swarm of wasps would appear and help her out. Actually, my mum's never been in danger, so there's still a chance...

Honestly, my mum's a real life Radagast.

I would read the hell out of that fairy tale. Or watch it as a movie. The Dear Sweet Mother and the Swarm of Friendly Wasps. SOMEBODY MAKE A MOVIE OF THIS RIGHT NOW

I had a math professor like that. She was very patient and understanding, and apparently she liked to let some of her students call her if they needed someone to talk to.

My 9th grade algebra teacher was like that. I struggled with math and she offered to tutor me during study hall. I came every day, my grades got progressively better, and in the final semester I got a A. I was at a party and when my mom picked me up she told me my teacher had called with her congratulations. Best night of my then fifteen years.

There must be something about professors. My former German professor is the friendliest person I've met in my entire life. No lie, I have never once seen him get upset. He smiles 24/7 and you can just tell it's genuine. Plus, he's so excited about his subject and for his students to learn, and is super flexible about things. He worked with me outside of class on an independent study every single semester.

It's always awesome when someone is passionate about what they teach. It makes you excited too, even if the subject isn't really your thing.

:D +1

I sometimes really admire his advice and the direct presentation he gives it wrapped in.

My best friend. And sometimes I feel burdened by that fact.

Re: The nicest person you know

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Why does that make you feel burdened?

Re: The nicest person you know

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
I arrived in a city on the other side of the world with way too little sleep, couldn't access my money (for stupid reasons) and the hostel I was supposed to meet my brother at didn't seem to exist (he had no mobile and due to last minute changes, our backup plan had stopped existing).

After desperately trying to find an Internet café to try and contact my brother that way (it was slowly starting to get dark), I ran into this really nice couple who not only lent me a smartphone to access my mails but actually spent the entire evening helping me find my brother. I honestly don't know what I would have done if they hadn't been there to help me out of the incredibly stupid situation I had got myself into.

It's situations like that that restore my faith in humanity. :)

my mom

she spent months taking care of me when i had a really bad injury when i was younger, and is still one of the kindest and most giving people i've ever known, and is one of those people who tries to do right by everyone and everything no matter what
