Well part of me likes it because I wouldn't want to wait multiple seasons to see Ramsay/Theon interaction. And it is necessary just because A.) Ramsay wasn't introduced last season for some stupid reason and B.) the alternative would be for Theon to be absent for two seasons.

That being said, I do think last night's episode was gratuitous and I preferred what happened to have been left ambigious like it was in the books.

I'm sad they didn't actual show Theon's dick getting cut off.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-13 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sad we didn't see Ros get shot up with arrows.

Those scenes are very difficult to watch but I think they're necessary to understand how Reek was born. In the books the author could manage to explain it thanks to Theon's thoughts and memories, but you can't do that in a show (unless you're showing those memories, and then we're back again when we started). Anyway, if we could get a rest from the torture, I would appreciate it.

They likely show it in the series because "Oh, btw, Theon got tortured horribly." doesn't work so well on screen.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-13 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
The whole thing could have been done through the knowledge that Theon was Ramsay's prisoner, and the same rumours about Ramsay that we got in the books. It ruins the "Oh hey, that Reek dude is Theon!" moment. I guess they think the audience's attention span is too short to handle surprise long-lost characters (see also Arstan Notbeard).

So, yeah, including all the torture is unnecessary and disturbing. They could cut that and twenty brothel scenes and fill the gaps with plot.

I don't know, these scenes are pretty brutal and I'm feeling queasy in advance about that scene in the latest episode which I haven't seen yet, but on the whole I'm interested in that whole Reek-ification storyline and I trust Alfie Allen to be a great Reek. I wish they would focus more on the psychological aspects though (although I supposed the physical torture was a necessary preamble.)

I kind of skipped those scenes so I'm not even sure what's exactly going on there (which makes me saaaad, I'll have to put on the big girl panties and just suffer through them some time). So yeah, I agree... I get being made uncomfortable, but so uncomfortable that I'd rather not be able to follow the storyline than watch it, that sucks for me :(

His scene in last night's episode skeeved me out so hard and had the misfortune of further proving the hypocrisy of SJW's.

I usually don't mind torture scenes, and for the most part I haven't minded these ones. For some reason the one with the pinky really got to me though.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-14 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I get wanting to see what was going on with Theon rather than him being not there at all for a couple seasons. The torture scenes make me cringe but Game of Thrones has never been.,. tame, so I put up with it for plot's sakes. Even when it's a bit much.

Yeah, I find the vagueness surrounding what happened to him more effective than the gratuitous torture porn, but it's a bitch to adapt for screen.

The handling of Theon's storyline is unforgivably bad, OP. No scary, not gruesome, just cartoonish and badly done. Iwan Rheon is awful as Ramsay, though I remember liking him in Misfits.

I think this is my last go around with this show. So far it's been dropping in quality exponentially every season, and nothing I've read about the post-ASoS books interests me either, so. Sad to say, but shit like this is why I won't miss it.

It's because HBO is terrible.

It's HBO.

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-05-14 10:14 am (UTC)(link)
Gratuitous sex and violence and all that other stuff you can't show on normal channels is like half the point of putting a show on there in the first place.

Theon has a very similar name to a man I loathe. I would like to think I'm not so petty as to mentally take advantage of this.

I haven't read the books and I'm not bothered by gore/blood,so I don't mind his torture scenes, but they feel so long to me.We need character development and all that, but the torture scene in 03x07 seemed endless.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-14 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
...I must be the only person not particularly bothered by the torture scenes or their length. Mostly I just kind of want to put Theon out of his misery.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-14 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
You should probably stop watching now because it's going to get worse for a lot of characters.

Well, maybe this is just because I've seen so many horror movies and the like, but the torture scenes are pretty tame to me, in that they don't show much. It's mostly just implied (I like the actor they got for Ramsay)
