Big fat Indie Rec's (Edit: /co/ helps!) BIG ASS PICTURE

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2013-05-13 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Here's a list with almost nothing from Marvel Or DC, and the things that were are all completed. Might rekindle your love, or give you some more varied reading at least. Most of these come with a beginning and an end, or at least an implied one in the future! (cept maybe walking dead).

My personal favorites (some on the list below, some not)

Prophet,
Saga,
Umbrella Academy,
I Kill Giants
Invincible
Locke and Key,
Preacher,
Transmetropolitan,
Y the Last Man,
Walking Dead
Stuff of legend
The Goon.

Especially Saga and Locke and Key! Though none of those are anything but great. (I think preacher is the weakest but still think it's good)

Edit: I put this up on /co/. Called you a friend, friend. But this is pretty much what that corner of 4chan lives for, so there'll be some good shit up there as long as the thread survives. Seriously, not a troll or nothing. We live for this.

http://boards.4chan.org/co/res/49541895

HERE'S THE BIG ASS LIST! (there's more narrorow lists on the thread)

I know I know, a few on here like watchmen, Lucifer and Madame Xanadu doesn't really count, but it also kinda does.

Warnings:
Jimmy Corrigan is possibly the most depressing thing I've ever written

Cerberus is long, and the first part is amazing, but it gets super misogynistic towards the end when the author goes insane. If you look into it you'll find plenty of sources that tell you where to stop.

/a/, /co/ and /v/ love making lists. But some of the lists on /a/ can't be trusted unless you know what genre you are looking at.

Jimmy is absolutely amazing, let me be clear. But you will need some chocolate or some free time to curl up in a fetal ball for an existential misery crisis if you are unprepared for the utter sad.

Edit: Also I said it was the most depressing thing I've ever written. read. READ. Wow.

Aw man, I'm reading Transmetropolitan right now. Ten years later, and it's still so relevant and it is so. Good.

I really thought Spider would just be a typical angry 90's antihero, but he's so complex and genuine and...oddly compassionate. I just love this book.

It's really scary how relevant Transmetro is even today.

Most good political-edged work stays relevant for decades, even centuries, because sadly at the end of the day, that whole Man's Inhumanity To Man theme with a dash of Power Corrupts (and the Corrupt get Power) is probably universally a part of the human condition.

That's because he's secretly Hunter S Thompson. Or, I guess, FUTURE Hunter S Thompson but still. That was very much a characteristic of HST, once you looked past the wacky drug stuff. I don't really think that Spider is 'just' Hunter S Thompson - he's his own character and he is complex and great - but I think that element is one that comes pretty directly from the Hunter S Thompson influence.

Saga!

Came in the thread to rec it, still stand by it!

Also, I find that comics reading comes and goes with me, at least. I read as a young child in the 80s, all through my teens in the 90s, for a year or so in the early 2000s, and then again starting last summer.

Or hey, just stop reading. You don't have to do it :-)

Also: Hahaha, this is most of my comics reading list XD

I don't really keep up with a lot of ongoing series anymore, because my favorites are either ended, like Hellblazer and Sandman, or have been ruined beyond recognition since the new-52 reboot (PHANTOM STRANGER NOOOOOOOOOO). So I like to look for newer indie stuff that might strike my fancy.

Also also, I don't see Nextwave on that recommendation page. What the hell.

Remember, this is a more indie list. OP said they didn't want the big two or dark horse, so I got the indie list that technically avoids that (for those not in the know, some stuff on the list like Lucifer is a property of DC but was made on one of the side labels)

Orc Stain interests me because I like stories about orcs, but not so sure I'm sold on the style. Has anyone read it? Got opinions?

Also Bone, Mouse Guard, and Y: the Last Man are all great reads.

Orc Stain is fucking awesome. But it's SLOW AS SHIT to come out. To be fair, the guy drawing this is drawing it immaculately detailed. Like or hate the style, you can't deny he's giving it a lot of attention. Kinda like an American berserk in that sense.

That said, I'm kicking myself that I didn't mention Orc Stain above. My bad.

al_numbers here. Too lazy to log in.

I've been a bit curious about Transmetropolitan for a while actually. Is it really good as everyone else says?

Also, about Dinotopia. I've read Journey to Chandara (have to book, actually) and I wouldn't think that it's a comic book, but more of an illustrated story-artbook. An incredible story-artbook.

Maybe I should make a secret about graphic novels...
