I like Figwit, but I sort of hate the ugly Elvish name people gave him in fics.
Hasn't he been retconned into a book character now though?

Yep, he's Lindir now.

That ugly Elvish name came from the movie team, and consists of smushing together the two different Elvish dialects. It does vaguely mean 'Figwit' though.

Well, I guess they couldn't exactly call him Figwit officially, so I understand why they changed it, although I'm no fan of mixing languages in compound words (names included). I have to admit I kind of love the whole thing - taking a fan acronym, reading it as a word, taking the constituent parts (I guess? Fig + Wit?), translating them into a name that could be Elvish and making it the character's canonical name - and find it kind of hilarious and awesome.

I thought it was a fanon thing, not from the movie team? I've only seen it in fanworks and have a vague memory of people coming up with it because 'Figwit' sounded weird in their fics. He just got credited as 'Elf Escort' in RotK, and there were trading cards or something official that used 'Figwit'.
